Oklahoma has announced that former pitcher George Frazier, a World Series champion who had a nearly three-decade run as a television broadcaster, has died at age 68.
The Denver Post reported he died Monday in Tulsa after a recent illness.
In two seasons at Oklahoma, he played on College World Series teams in 1975 and 1976 and posted a 12-4 career record with eight saves and a 2.62 earned run average.
Frazier played parts of 10 Major League Baseball seasons with five clubs. He appeared in the 1981 World Series with the New York Yankees and helped the Chicago Cubs win their first division title in 1984 before becoming a world champion with the Minnesota Twins in 1987. He pitched two scoreless innings for the Twins during Game 4 of that World Series against St. Louis. He posted a career 4.20 ERA with 35 wins and 29 saves in 415 Major League appearances.
After that, he spent 18 years as a television broadcaster with the Colorado Rockies.
He returned to Oklahoma in 2015 as a color analyst on television broadcasts through the 2023 season. Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione called Frazier's commentary a "witty, insightful and uniquely entertaining perspective of the game."
Frazier sometimes joined radio play-by-play voice Toby Rowland on broadcasts for Oklahoma baseball games in Tulsa and Stillwater and for Big 12 tournament games in Oklahoma City.
CLEVELAND -- Gavin Williams, the Cleveland Guardians' top pitching prospect, will make his major league debut on Wednesday with a start against the Oakland Athletics.
Williams, 23, has risen quickly through the Guardians organization, and the club feels it's time to see how his electric fastball plays against the game's best players. A first-round draft pick in 2021, he is ranked No. 36 on ESPN insider Kiley McDaniel's updated list of top 50 prospects.
The Guardians, who are two games behind first-place Minnesota in the AL Central, announced Williams' start before opening a three-game series against the A's.
Williams has gone 4-2 with a 2.39 ERA this season at Double-A Akron (three starts) and Triple-A Columbus (nine starts). He has 81 strikeouts in 60 innings. Last season, Williams struck out 149 in 115 innings.
With starters Triston McKenzie (elbow) and Cal Quantrill (shoulder) on the injured list, the Guardians have an opportunity to get a look at Williams, who pitched in college at East Carolina.
Injuries have forced manager Terry Francona to plug holes in his starting staff and use rookies Tanner Bibee and Logan Allen more than expected.

NEW YORK -- Major League Baseball will stage a Negro Leagues tribute game at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama, on June 20, 2024, between the San Francisco Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals.
The 10,800-seat stadium, opened in 1910, is the oldest professional ballpark in the U.S. and a National Historic Site. The stadium was home to the Birmingham Black Barons from 1924 tp '60.
The game will honor Hall of Famer Willie Mays, a Birmingham native who began his professional career with the team in 1948.
MLB said Tuesday it is staging the game around the Juneteenth holiday, which commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in Texas in 1865. There also will be a Double-A game at the ballpark between the Birmingham Barons and Montgomery Biscuits of the Southern League on June 18.
St. Louis will be the home team for the June 20 game, scheduled to start shortly after 7 p.m. ET and to be televised nationally on Fox. Period uniforms will be used relating to the Negro Leagues history of San Francisco and St. Louis.
"The legacy of the Negro Leagues and its greatest living player, Willie Mays, is one of excellence and perseverance," baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. "We look forward to sharing the stories of the Negro Leagues throughout this event next year."
Mays, 92, is generally considered baseball's greatest living player. After playing with Birmingham, he signed with the New York Giants and was voted the 1951 National League Rookie of the Year as the Giants won the NL pennant.
A World Series champion with the Giants in 1954, Mays was a 24-time All-Star, tied with Stan Musial for second most behind Hank Aaron's 25. Mays won the 1954 major league batting title and was voted NL MVP in 1954 and 1965.
"I can't believe it. I never thought I'd see in my lifetime a Major League Baseball game being played on the very field where I played baseball as a teenager," Mays said in a statement. "It has been 75 years since I played for the Birmingham Black Barons at Rickwood Field, and to learn that my Giants and the Cardinals will play a game there and honor the legacy of the Negro Leagues and all those who came before them is really emotional for me. We can't forget what got us here, and that was the Negro Leagues for so many of us."
MLB will work with the City of Birmingham and Friends of Rickwood to renovate the ballpark, the home of the minor league Barons from 1910 to '61, 1964 to '65 and 1981 to '87. The Barons have played since 2013 at Regions Field, about 3 miles away, and shift one game annually to Rickwood in a tribute to the team's history.
The New York Yankees reinstated outfielder Harrison Bader from the injured list Tuesday.
Bader had been on the IL since May 30 with a hamstring strain. He was eligible to come off sooner but requested to extend his rehab stint to gain confidence in his healing hamstring.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone is happy to have Bader back in the lineup.
"Just excited to get him back to what he means to us in the center of the diamond, his ability in center and the trickle-down effect that has of moving guys," said Boone. "And then the threat he's proven to be in the box from a power standpoint, from a speed standpoint. He's a very dynamic athletic player, but a real anchor for us offensively and excited to get him back."
Bader, 29, was removed from the May 29 game against the Seattle Mariners with tightness in his hamstring. He made his season debut May 2 after hurting his left oblique muscle early in spring training.
Playing his first full season with the Yankees, Bader is batting .267 with six home runs and 19 RBIs in 26 games. He is a career .246 hitter with 58 home runs and 196 RBIs in 563 games for the St. Louis Cardinals (2017-22) and Yankees, and he won a Gold Glove Award in 2021.
The Yankees previously optioned INF/OF Oswaldo Cabrera to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday.
The club also announced that left-hander Carlos Rodon is set to begin his rehab assignment at Double-A Somerset.

Keely Hodgkinson turns on the speed at England age-group champs
Olympic and world 800m silver medallist runs runs 400m PB at England Athletics U20/23 Champs in Chelmsford as we bring you our latest track and field results round-up
After several weeks of uncertainty over whether Chelmsford would be ready in time to stage the England Athletics U20/23 Championships, the resurfacing of the track was completed successfully and many of the nation’s leading young athletes gathered there last weekend.
Keely Hodgkinson was the headline act as she won under-23 women’s 400m gold, but Michael Allison produced arguably the performance of the weekend in the under-20 men’s javelin.
ENGLAND ATHLETICS U20/U23 CHAMPIONSHIPS & U20 OPEN, Chelmsford, June 17-18
Keely Hodgkinson was the star name in action at Chelmsford as she set a PB on a weekend where athletes had one eye on qualifying standards for the European Under-20 Championships in Jerusalem, European Under-23 Championships in Espoo and Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago where the combination of victory and qualifier during or before guaranteed selection.
Others to impress included under-20s Charlie Carvell at 400m, Michael Allison in the javelin, Success Eduan at 200m, Phoebe Gill at 800m and Innes FitzGerald at 3000m.
Other under-23s to make their mark included Jeremiah Azu at 100m and Charlotte Payne in the hammer.
U20 men
Star performance in the field was Michael Allison’s 76.97m javelin, adding well over four metres to his PB and moving him to fourth all-time among UK juniors behind Britain’s greatest ever javelin thrower Steve Backley, former world junior champion David Parker and James Whiteaker.
It also puts him a very close second in this year’s European under-20 rankings.
Having already secured the necessary 70.00m hammer standard last month, Kai Barham did so again with a 70.04m throw to enjoy a four-metre victory as he too booked his place for Jerusalem.
Charlie Carvell, the 2021 European under-20 fourth-placer, looks set to do much better in Israel as he improved his PB from 46.48 to 46.18 as he won by well over a second.
With a 1:47.74 PB this summer, David Race was a huge favourite for the 800m and he confirmed his position and selection with a one-second victory in 1:49.88.
Having run 3:42.33 this summer, European under-18 1500m bronze medallist Tendai Nyabadza also looked the obvious selection certainty and his 3:50.87 gave him a second win over former under-17 English National winner Sam Mills.
That was also the case in the 3000m as Ed Bird, 18th in the World Cross Country and having improved to 8:03.52 this summer, looked a class apart as he won in 8:23.02.
English National runner-up James Dargan won a tight battle in the 5000m as he defeated sub-14 performer this summer, Conan Harper.
Sixteen-year-old Teddy Wilson ran his two fastest ever 100m times with a 10.44/-0.9 PB semi-final and then a 10.50 one-metre win in the final with a slightly stronger headwind 10.50/-1.4 with his latter performance exactly matching the qualifying standard for Jerusalem.
Needing a 21.20 qualifying mark and with a 21.21 PB, frustratingly Rusciano Thomas Riley had to face a strong 3.3m/sec headwind as he ran 21.25, which suggests the time wouldn’t have been a problem in the right conditions.
Daniel Goriola confirmed his sprint hurdles place for the Europeans with a 2.8m/sec headwind meaning his 13.88 victory was never going to approach his 13.76 PB and qualifying mark.
Sam Lunt was a class apart in the 400m hurdles as his 51.60 gave him a two-second victory and rubber stamped his Jerusalem place.
UK Inter-Counties cross-country champion Luke Birdseye took the steeplechase crown in a PB 9:10.18 but fell just over five seconds short of the qualifying mark.
Luke Ball, though, has no selection worries as his 2.14m PB in the high jump gained him selection.
Lazarus Benjamin fulfilled his selection as a 5.00m vault gained him an easy win though he is still searching for his 5.30m from from last year.
Under-17 D’mitri Varlack won the long jump with a PB 7.36/1.7 while Daniel Akrinadewo’s top British triple jump mark was only 15.03m, although he did already have the 15.30m qualifier this summer.
Rhys Allen trailed Aussie Darcy Miller’s 58.31m in the discus but wasn’t too far down on his best with 54.05m although he already has the 55.00m qualifier.
Sixteen-year-old Lewie Jones won the under-18 javelin competition with a huge PB of 65.23m though was short of the England qualifying mark of 67.00m for the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad in August.
Thanks to a big headwind, Noah Hanson missed the 13.80 Games mark in the hurdles with 13.89/3.7 but an earlier 13.51 in Loughborough ensures his selection.
Oliver Parker also had the necessary 53.50 Games 400m hurdles mark and he underlined his credentials with a 52.22 PB.

Despite a headwind, the first three were inside the 11.65 100m standard and European under-18 champion Nia Wedderburn-Goodison won by a metre in 11.53/-1.0 from Joy Eze and Renee Regis.
Further proof that Britain will have the quickest relay squad in Israel was provided in the 200m.
The 2021 Euro under-20 bronze medallist Success Eduan was still inside the 23.80 qualifying mark despite a strong wind to negotiate with her 23.61/-3.1 victory and she finished around six metres clear of world junior finalist Sophie Walton.

European under-18 400 champion Charlotte Henrich is still only 16 but will return to Israel this summer as her 54.04 season’s best bettered the 54.20 standard and defeated the already qualified by time by Ashley Nemits by five metres.
Sub-two performer this summer, Abigail Ives won her 800m heat but did not start the final which saw a clear victory for another huge prospect, 16-year-old Phoebe Gill who was close to her 2:03.10 PB with a two-second plus win over Indienne King and Iris Downes, who had also previously broken the 2:06.00 qualifying mark this summer.
The 1500m was another top quality race with four inside the 4:22.00 qualifier and a further four having gone into the race with a chance based on their previous times. North of England cross-country champion Ella Greenway, who was fourth in last year’s European under-18 800m, won in a fast 4:15.53 with under-17 and South of England champion Lyla Belshaw, second in a PB 4:17.34 with Jessica Lark (4:20.07) and Ava Lloyd (4:20.60) also setting PBs.
Multiple cross-country champion Innes FitzGerald already had the 1500m qualifier but was more intent on securing 3000m selection which she did comfortably enough with a hard 9:10.67 almost 20 seconds inside the required standard, despite hot and breezy conditions.
Behind her, under-17 and South of England champion Eliza Nicholson had her first sub-9:30 run as she gained the qualifying mark with 9:24.17 just ahead of the 2022 world mountain running champion Jess Bailey (9:24.67).
Scot Natasha Phillips, just one of two competitors in the 5000m, set a PB 16:18.50 to gain her selection at the longer event.
Three athletes went into the 100m hurdles final with the 13.70 qualifying mark but a big headwind kept times down as another European under-18 champion Mia McIntosh (13.80/-3.6) edged Jessica Duncton and Kira Holt (both 13.88) with the rest almost a second back.
The 400m hurdles was more predictable and clearcut as Emily Newnham improved her PB to 57.54 which consolidates her sixth position in the UK all-time under-20 lists.
Stephanie Okoro, third in last year’s European Under-18 Championships, fell just short of the 59.0 qualifying time with a 59.29 season’s best in second.
Frustratingly Hattie Reynolds just missed the 10:30 qualifying mark and her 10:30.92 PB with a clear steeplechase victory in 10:31.83.
Gracie Griffiths set a PB 13:48.72 in winning the 3000m walk.
World under-20 finalist Cleo Agyepong was one of few field qualifiers as her 14.83m season’s best just bettered the necessary 14.80m standard for selection.
Her Blackheath & Bromley clubmate Zara Obamakinwa was more clearcut as she left the British opposition almost 10 metres in arrears as she again bettered the 49.00m standard as she has in all nine of her competitions this year.
Lily Murray won the hammer with a PB 55.53m throw while javelin thrower Rachael Wall also had her longest ever throw though 44.21m won’t prove enough for selection.
Australians went one-two in the high jump as Gracie Wall’s 1.78m PB gave her a national title on countback over Halle Ferguson, who had achieved he 1.81m qualifier the week before.
Frustratingly Lucy Fellows, who has a legal 6.20m PB, had her longest ever long jump of 6.35/2.2 but was narrowly denied a 6.25m qualifying mark by the marginally excessive wind with Stephanie Jones (6.28/2.9) and Chishom Nwafor (6.25/3.5) also on standard but counting for nothing due to the breeze.
Triple jumper Georgina Scoot (12.84/-0.8) and pole vaulter Emilie Oakden (3.75m) both set PBs but were short of the necessary qualifying mark to interest the selectors.
In under-18 competition Ayesha Jones threw 48.72m in the javelin just ahead of Hannah Lewington’s 47.93m PB compared to England Athletics’ 48.00m qualifier.

There was a competitive men’s 5000m with English National junior champion Will Barnicoat guaranteeing his Espoo selection ahead of US-based Rory Leonard.
The English National senior champion Jamie Kingston was fifth and a former under-17 champion Sam Charlton was sixth.
Despite a hefty 2.5m/sec headwind, Tom Wilcock won the hurdles in a PB 13.98 just head of 13.56 performer this summer Sam Bennett while last year’s steeplechase junior champion Thomas Bridger moved up an age group to go close to his best with 8:51.66.
The 2021 European under-20 finalist Dominic Ogbechie who once cleared 2.22m indoors at the age of 16, won his first under-23 title with a 2.10m leap.
Though some way short of the necessary qualifying marks, Andy Knight won the shot title with a PB 17.53m and Ruben Banks (67.96m) did likewise in the hammer while Chukwuemeka Osammor was way off his PB his 54.04m victory is backed up by a 58.82m performance in the UK Winter Long throws and so can look forward to a trip to Finland.
Australian Howard McDonald won the javelin with a 78.05m throw but it was BUCS champion Ben East, who is still a teenager, who threw a PB 74.03m to win the British title.

World and Olympic 800m silver medallist Keely Hodgkinson sets a 400m PB and champs record of 52.24 to win the England U23 title in Chelmsford.

U23 women
In a race disappointingly run as a straight final, Keely Hodgkinson further trimmed her 400m PB to 52.24 as she won by just under a second from Natasha Harrison (53.13). The multiple 800m medallist improved on her previous best of 52.41 which was set at last year’s British Championships.
Also coached by Trevor Painter, Steph Driscoll won the 800m in 2:05.92.
British hammer champion Charlotte Payne followed up her 72.51m PB of the week before which placed her third all-time in the UK with another top-class effort with a 71.16m victory which left her nine opponents over 11 metres in arrears and was her second best ever and was her 10th competition (out of 10) that she has exceeded the necessary 66.00m qualifying performance.
The 1500m was also not a fast race but both Sarah Calvert and Alex Millard already had the 4:14.0 qualifying time and Calvert’s 4:20.99 to 4:21.74 victory ensures she will be in Finland.
In the 5000m both Eloise Walker (15:51.63) and Megan Keith (15:55.92) were inside the 16:00 qualifying mark but had already ran significantly faster in better conditions and both should challenge for medals in Espoo.
With just 0.04 of a second covering the top four, Aleeya Sibbons edged British under-20 200m record-holder Amy Hunt to rubber stamp her Espoo selection with a 11.46 100m while Cassie-Ann Pemberton did likewise with a 23.71/-2.5 200m into a strong headwind.
A headwind also slowed Abigail Pawlett in the hurdles to 13.52/-2.0 but she too also had the qualifying mark.
BUCS champion Sarah Tait was another to guarantee selection with her victory as her 10:11.95 steeplechase victory as she also had the necessary qualifier as she enjoyed a 37-second winning margin over Morgan Squibb’s PB.
Hammer aside, field performances and numbers were a little patchy in places but all credit to pole vaulter Jade Spencer-Smith who set a 4.30m PB in excess of the 4.25m standard which was her previous best.
BUCS shot champion Serena Vincent came close to her 16.90m PB set in winning in the European Throwing Cup with her second best ever mark of 16.86m which was well over the necessary 16.50m standard.
Javelin thrower Lauren Farley will also make the trip as after her 56.73m win at Loughborough, and here her 52.06m gave her a six-metre margin of victory.
The first five triple jumpers set their longest ever marks albeit propelled by illegal winds with Lily Huland coming out on top with a 13.39/2.7 but she did have her best legal mark of 13.24/1.8 in the competition but needed a 13.50m for selection.
Georgina Forde-Wells was second (13.30/3.0).
The 3000m walk was most notable for the first three all being called Hannah with Aussies Mison and Bolton well clear of Cambridge Harrier Hopper and Mison was actually quicker than the male walkers competing in Chelmsford.

Elliot Giles had a splendid night. He won the 800m in 1:45.90 and then 20 minutes later led home the 1500m in 3:43.82.
Olympic semi finalist Daniel Rowden was second in the 800m in a season’s best of 1:46.14.
Erin Wallace had never broken 2:03 before this year and after running 2:01.78 at the end of May, here she ran a stunning 1:59.69 to become the 31st British athlete to break two minutes.
Olympic 1500m runner Revee Walcott-Nolan became the 32nd as she improved her PB from 2:01.74 to 1:59.96.
Unfortunately the marks will not count for qualifying times as there was a late change and a male pacemaker was required.
Under-20 athlete Annie Mann improved her 1500m PB to 4:16.99 as she led home the metric mile.

Meet Eugene Amo-Dadzie – “The world’s fastest accountant”
AW travels to Lee Valley to catch up with the 30-year-old after his incredible 9.93 run in Austria
With a laptop placed on his lap, Eugene Amo-Dadzie is busy working away at his day job, as a full-time chartered accountant.
Not from his office desk in a city skyscraper but the 60m track at Lee Valley Sports Centre.
He’s been allowed to work from home – AKA his training facilities – and has his briefcase stored next to the acupuncture table.
Amo-Dadzie is used to balancing up his full-time job as a senior management accountant for a subsidiary of Berkeley Group, with his sprinting ambitions.
The 30-year-old, who only started running seriously four years ago, created waves of attention over the weekend when he clocked 9.93 (0.1) to go joint-fourth on the UK all-time list. That time was also the joint-sixth fastest by a Brit in history. Only 10 British men have gone sub-10 seconds over the 100m. Amo-Dadzie is the 11th.
“I just want to have a dust up. Let’s go to war and see who comes out on top.”
After his 9.93 run in Austria, @TrackDadzie, who is a full-time accountant, is full of belief as he prepares for the British Trials on July 8-9 ??

It hadn’t come out of nowhere. AW spoke to Amo-Dadzie at the European Indoor Championships back in March after he was knocked at the semi-final stage. The fact that Amo-Dadzie, representing Great Britain in his first ever major championships, was up against Olympic 100m champion Marcell Lamont Jacobs, proved how far he’d come.
His 9.93 clocking in Graz Austria, however, was a step up again. The wind was pretty much dead and you wonder how close Amo-Dadzie would’ve got to Linford Christie’s British record of 9.87 if there was a perfect legal tailwind.
To put the longevity into context, Amo-Dadzie wasn’t even a one-year-old when Christie set that time.
The full-time accountant is now in touching reach of that historic mark and it’s now about being consistent ahead of the UK Athletics Championships (July 8-9).
“I know we’re in a sport that judges you on how high you jump, how far you can throw or what the clock stops at when you cross that line,” Amo-Dadzie tells AW. “For me, however, I’m process oriented. I don’t get drawn into the hypotheticals. If it happens, it happens.
“Do I believe I can break the British [100m] record? By the grace of God, why not? I don’t think that many people ask themselves that question. They’ll be a queue of people telling you why you can’t do something.
“Some people think I might be deluded but shoutout to Jazmin Sawyers. Her speech at the European Indoors in Istanbul included the line ‘a little delusion goes a long way’. As a man of faith, that resonated with me.
“Your job in life is to subscribe to proving people that doubt you wrong. Anything who has ever done anything great believed they could do it. I’m not standing here saying I’m going to break Linford’s record but if it does happen it would be because I believed it could happen and I’ve worked hard for it.”
Regardless of times, Amo-Dadzie knows that if he finishes inside the top two at next month’s national championships, then he will be on the plane to Budapest and represent Great Britain at this year’s Word Championships.
He and Reece Prescod – 9.99 (0.4) at Hengelo – are the only two Brits to have gone under 10 seconds this year so far.
“I want to take care of business [at the UKA Champs],” he says. “I just want to have a dust up with those guys. My journey to get to this point hasn’t been plain sailing by any means. Last year I was injured and I missed the UK trials so I missed the chance to go to the Commonwealth Games, World Championships and European Championships.
“All I wanted to do when I was watching was to be in the mixer. These are the names [Prescod and Zharnel Hughes] that have been at the forefront of sprinting in this country for a long time. Let’s go to war and see who comes out on top.
“I’m relishing that battle and I’m not going to be scared by that. Some people might say there’s a target on my back now but I”m not the type of person to shy away from a battle. I’m very much ready to do what needs to be done and my eyes are on those objectives.”
Five years ago these thoughts would’ve been a fantasy.
Amo-Dadzie hadn’t planned to take up sprinting seriously until he was persuaded by his best friend Ben. The pair play Saturday League football with each other and five years ago were travelling back from a match at Aston Playing Fields – the home of Woodford Green and Essex Ladies AC – when they stopped and watched a 100m race.

Eugene Amo-Dadzie, who labels himself as the "fastest accountant in the world" and started sprinting just four years ago, has clocked 9.93 (0.1) over 100m ?

Ben advised him that if he put a pair of spikes he could beat the guys who took part.
A spark went off in Amo-Dadzie’s brain and he joined Woodford Green and Essex Ladies AC in the autumn of 2018. A year on, he had clocked a wind-legal best of 10.93.
It’s exactly a second behind his current best mark of 9.93 and progression is obvious, with personal bests of 10.20 and 10.05 in 2021 and 2022 respectively.
A significant factor to that development is Amo-Dadzie’s coach Steve Fudge, who trained James Dasaolu between 2012-2016 and Adam Gemili between 2013-2016.
Fudge, who spotted Amo-Dadzie at the 2020 Essex County and Eastern AA Championships, was impressed and took the then 27-year-old under his wing later on that year.
The pair have prioritised process over times on the clock and Amo-Dadzie is open about the changes that have helped him run quicker.
“When I first came to my current coach Steve Fudge I did the 100m in about 48 steps,” Amo-Dadzie adds. “There was a lot of frequency going on. When I ran 9.93 it was in 45 steps. I’ve not done that by sacrificing my natural skills which is being more of a frequency based runner. People like Usain Bolt are stride guys and I think he once ran the 100m in about 41 strides which is insane.
“It’s how do we improve technically. I’m not a gatekeeper of anything and I put my stuff out there. You can see how the mechanics have changed over time. I don’t worry about how fast I am running in training, my concern is how do I execute it?
“I’m trying to create a model that when I’m in the right situation – when the wind is good and it’s warm – that I can run a quick time. It wasn’t a surprise to my coach or me as I believed it could happen.
“It’s closing the gap between my lack of exposure to high speed running and the strength and conditioning side of the sport, to the talent I obviously have. I have a much engine now than a few years ago and I can now handle that type of running. I didn’t rotate and stayed on it when doing that 9.93.”
So how does Amo-Dadzie find the time to train on top of being a full-time chartered accountant?
This is how Eugene Amo-Dadzie clocked 9.93 (0.1) ?
In doing so, he went joint-fourth on the UK 100m all-time list ??

He states that such was the backing from colleagues at work, his old finance director actually made a provision in his contract that meant he could train. Amo-Dadzie is grateful for their support.
“My manager and finance director have been phenomenal,” he tells AW. “I took holiday at short notice to go to the European Indoors and they were happy with that. They let me take my work laptop to Houston to a warm weather training camp and work remotely.
“They do accommodate this sport and understand the level that I’m now at. A large part of my job satisfaction now comes from being able to pursue my dreams in this sport. They don’t want to take that away from me.
“I actually shared it [the 9.93 ] on LinkedIn and my old manager and current FD reached out. They’re excited about it and how I’m an ambassador for the company. It’s such a bonus for them being as supportive as they are.”
If Amo-Dadzie keeps plugging away those kind of times on a consistent basis then there is no doubt sponsorship will soon be knocking on his door.
He already had UK anti-doping do that when they arrived at his house at 6.45am, the morning he got back from Austria. Amo-Dadzie takes that as a compliment and “validation of his achievement”.
Erudite, charismatic and deeply religious, Amo-Dadzie wants to inspire people with his story, especially those who started out in life at a later stage than the majority.
He is beyond relatable and has an infectious personality that makes you want to listen on a deep level.
It’s only fair then that Amo-Dadzie gets the last word in.
“I think I have such a beautiful and unique story that can be really powerful,” he adds. “I want it to be testament, evidence and proof that if you commit yourself and believe that something is possible then, God willing, it can find a way of happening.
“I’m a man of faith and this isn’t passive, it’s active faith. There’s no logic to my story but someone who was willing to put work in has made something happen. If you’re too old or busy, then try out your dream. Everyone gets dealt a hand and I’m going to play the heck out of mine.”
Venus Williams beats Camila Giorgi in thriller at Birmingham Classic
Venus Williams defied her physical problems to beat Italy's Camila Giorgi in an emotional first-round thriller at the Birmingham Classic.
American Williams appeared to be in tears after taking a medical timeout just five games into the match.
However, with her right knee heavily strapped, the 43-year-old battled to a 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 7-6 (8-6) win.
It was only Williams' second singles victory in almost two years after lengthy injury lay-offs.
"I hit some 120mph serves and I haven't done that in a couple of years - I was like, I've missed you!" Williams, now ranked 657, said.
"I thought I played well today and she did too. I'm surprised she's not number one in the world.
"There were so many moments where I thought the match was over and she hit a shot out of nowhere so she pushed me to be better than what I thought I could be."
Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, received vocal support from the Birmingham crowd as she pushed through her physical limitations in a gruelling encounter.
She had lost on her return to grass-court tennis at the Libema Open last week but, despite a heavily strapped right knee, showed some of her trademark grit to secure victory over Giorgi.
"I got out to a great start and my leg started hurting in the third game and I thought 'oh no not this'", Williams added.
"It was hard to control my emotions. Eventually I just tried to ignore it - I couldn't move as well as I wanted but I tried to get to every ball."
Williams battles past Giorgi in engrossing match
In an intriguing start, former world number one Williams secured an early double break in the first set but was left close to tears after taking a medical timeout.
Giorgi sought to capitalise but the five-time Wimbledon singles champion saved break point with back-to-back aces, despite the heavy strapping on her knee and some lethargy between points.
World number 48 Giorgi reeled off the next three games but Williams held firm to force a tie-break, which she claimed with a stunning backhand winner.
Williams looked zapped of energy in the second set, falling a double-break down but rallying remarkably to break back before Giorgi's powerful hitting forced a deciding set.
Although she is entering the latter stages of her career, Williams, who accepted a wildcard to compete in Birmingham, showed little sign of relenting in the third.
She secured yet another early break before Giorgi rallied from 5-2 down to force a tie-break without facing a single match point.
But Williams was patient and showcased her experience to see out her first victory over a top-50 player since 2019 and set up a last-16 tie against the Czech Republic's Linda Noskova or Latvian second seed Jelena Ostapenko.
Earlier, Ukrainian Elina Svitolina was dismantled 6-2 6-0 in just 52 minutes by Czech 18-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova.
Following an impressive run to the French Open quarter-finals, Svitolina slumped to a 4-0 deficit and had no answer to the teenager's dominance in the second set.
It marks Fruhvirtova's first win in five matches and she will face American Bernarda Pera in the last 16, having never played a main-draw WTA match on grass before Monday.
At the German Open, two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova sealed a 6-3 6-4 opening-round victory over compatriot Karolina Pliskova, her first victory since triumphing at the Miami Open in April.
France's world number four Caroline Garcia overcame German wildcard Sabine Lisicki 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 to reach the last 16.
Anett Kontaveit: Former world number two will retire after Wimbledon
Former world number two Anett Kontaveit has announced her retirement from tennis due to a condition in her back.
The Estonian said the problem "does not allow for full-scale training or continued competition" and explained Wimbledon will be her last tournament.
The 27-year-old's best result in a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the Australian Open quarter-finals in 2020.
"Tennis has given and taught me a lot," Kontaveit said.
She added in a statement on Instagram: "It has been important for me to bring the Estonian flag to the tennis courts and to be able to play in front of my supporters and fans all over the world.
"I am ready for new challenges after my last effort as a professional tennis player."
Kontaveit has lumbar disc degeneration, which can cause pain, numbness and pins and needles, according to the NHS.
Wimbledon starts on 3 July and the draw will be made on 30 June.
