Sensational breakthrough of 3:54.36 for Salford Harrier plus news of another win for Kate Axford in our UK track and field round-up

BMC REGIONAL RACES, Leeds, June 5

Finishing fifth in the men’s 1500m, Evan Grime ran a sensational 3:54.36 to break the UK under-15 record.

Grime ran over 18 seconds quicker than his best of 2022 (4:13.16) which won him the England under-15 title last year although he did run a 3:59.91 the week before.

That time moved him close to Ben Greenwood’s 10-year-old mark of 3:59.20 and gave him heart for a second attempt.

His 3:54.36 is so quick that on Tuesday midday it was still not on the Power of 10 website as it is is much faster than the record limit on the system of 3:55 which has been set to avoid unrealistic times initially showing as record marks.

The Salford and Trafford athlete had had a good cross-country season highlighted by a win in the Schools International (after top six places in the English Schools, Inter-Counties and English National).

He also won the Mini London Marathon in April.

Doubles partners Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid will meet in an all-British men's wheelchair singles quarter-final at the French Open after both players advanced on Tuesday.

World number one and three-time champion Hewett beat the Netherlands' Tom Egberink 6-3 7-5.

Reid, a two-time runner-up at Roland Garros, won 6-1 6-1 against Dutchman Maikel Scheffers.

Fellow Briton Lucy Shuker lost 6-2 6-2 against American Dana Mathewson.

Hewett, a seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, was dominant in the opening set but found himself 5-2 down in the second after two breaks of serve by Egberink.

However, he won five games in a row to take the match and progress to the quarter-finals as he bids for a third consecutive major singles title.

His good friend Reid claimed the opening set against Scheffers in just 33 minutes before wrapping up the second in a similar fashion to reach an eighth successive quarter-final on the Paris clay.

Shuker started brightly against her doubles partner Mathewson in their first-round encounter, establishing a quick 2-0 lead before the American rattled off six games in a row to win the set.

The players traded breaks in the second but Matthewson proved the stronger of the two to set up a quarter-final against third seed Jiske Griffioen of the Netherlands.

Novak Djokovic survived a quarter-final scare from Karen Khachanov to keep his bid for a record 23rd men's Grand Slam singles title alive at the French Open.

Djokovic was in danger of falling two sets behind against the Russian but prevailed 4-6 7-6 (7-0) 6-2 6-4.

He could become the first man to win all four majors at least three times.

Djokovic's win sets up a potential semi-final with world number one Carlos Alcaraz, who faces Stefanos Tsitsipas in Tuesday's night session (19:15 BST).

The Serb had not dropped a set all tournament on the Paris clay but Khachanov provided the test he arguably needed to prepare him for either Alcaraz or Tsitsipas in the last four.

Having faced seven break points - saving six of them - in losing the opening set, Djokovic tightened up his service game for the majority of the match thereon.

And while the 36-year-old was kept on court for three hours and 43 minutes, the outcome never really looked in doubt once he comprehensively won the second-set tie-break.

"I played the perfect tie-break and from that moment onwards I played a couple of levels higher than I did at the beginning," Djokovic said in his on-court interview.

"It was a big fight, it's what you expect in the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam. You are not going to have your victories handed to you and I'm glad to have overcome it today."

Unrelenting Djokovic outlasts valiant Khachanov

Djokovic came into the match having won 29 successive sets in Grand Slams but Khachanov ended that streak in just under an hour on Court Philippe Chatrier.

The world number 11 matched Djokovic in the returning stakes - not usually a Khachanov strength - early on and finally broke serve in a marathon fifth game after seeing four previous break points saved.

He served out the set, despite a typically-dogged Djokovic saving three set points, two on his own serve and one on Khachanov's.

Neither player earned a single break point in a serve-dominated second set, which Djokovic claimed in clinical fashion without dropping a point in a one-sided tie-break.

A fortunate net-cord handed Djokovic a break of serve in a lengthy opening game of the third set and he rarely looked back from there as Khachanov's challenge discernibly faltered.

The Russian had never beaten a top-five player in a Grand Slam or on clay, holding 0-8 records in both categories, and the belief he showed in the opening two sets began to desert him.

Khachanov still showed quality to test Djokovic in patches, particularly late in the fourth set where he threatened a revival by breaking back from 3-1 down, but Djokovic won eight successive points from 4-4 to wrap up victory in style with an ace.

A ninth victory in 10 meetings with Khachanov sealed a 45th Slam semi-final appearance for Djokovic - one shy of the record held by Roger Federer - but it is the 'big one', the record 23rd men's title, that surely motivates him.

And with the injured Nadal absent - not just in Paris but probably for the rest of the year - the Spaniard will likely be looking to his compatriot Alcaraz to help him preserve his share of the Grand Slam title record.

CCL to be renamed, winners to get $5m prize

Concacaf announced Tuesday that it is renaming the Concacaf Champions League to the Concacaf Champions Cup, and significantly increasing the prize money, with the winners set to receive $5 million.

The name change sees Concacaf revert to what was used in the first 47 years of the confederation's top club competition. Concacaf changed the name to the Concacaf Champions League in 2008.

More significant is the growth in prize money, with the winners receiving $5m, an increase of more than five times from this season, when Mexico's Club Leon beat LAFC in the final. The changes will start with the 2024 edition of the tournament.

"The Concacaf Champions Cup will take continental club football in our region to the next level," said Concacaf president Victor Montagliani. "It will elevate leagues and clubs across Concacaf and the new name for the competition, alongside this vibrant new brand, allows us to celebrate our rich history while looking ahead to a great future of international club football in North America, Central America, and the Caribbean."

Concacaf had already announced a change in structure to the event, one that will see 27 teams across the region qualify for the tournament. The tournament will consist of five rounds, with 22 teams starting in the first round. Five teams -- the winners of MLS, Liga MX, the Leagues Cup, the Central American Cup and the Caribbean Cup -- will receive first round byes and begin play in the round of 16.

The top clubs in North America will continue to have the opportunity to qualify through domestic leagues (Liga MX, MLS, Canadian Premier League) and cup competitions (US Open Cup, Canadian Championship).

As well as the winner of the Central American Cup, five additional teams will qualify via that tournament. In a similar fashion, two additional teams from the Caribbean Cup -- the runner up and third place finisher -- will qualify.

"The new Concacaf club ecosystem will deliver more of those big rivalry matchups that we know footballers want to play in and that fans want to see," Montagliani added. "Clubs across the region will have to be at their very best to compete to win the Concacaf Champions Cup and to earn the right to represent the region in the revamped and expanded FIFA Club World Cup which begins in 2025."

The first four stages will each include home and away play, while the final, where the region's champion will be crowned, will be played as a single-leg match on a weekend date.

"We are incredibly excited about this new ecosystem and for the first edition of the new and expanded Concacaf Champions Cup next year," said Concacaf general secretary Philippe Moggio.

"In considering options for the name of the tournament we conducted significant research among our stakeholders, including with fans. Maintaining the word 'Champions' was crucial for us to highlight that this tournament is at the top of the club pyramid in Concacaf, and we also feel that moving away from 'Champions League' allows us to develop a unique identity for our club competition.

"In returning to the original tournament name, we will have the opportunity to truly connect the last 61 years of Continental club football in Concacaf with what is coming in the future."

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- For weeks, the New York Jets have expressed optimism about their chances of signing star defensive tackle Quinnen Williams to a contract extension. They took it up another notch Tuesday, with coach Robert Saleh stating matter-of-factly that Williams -- absent for voluntary workouts -- will report to training camp with a new deal.

"I speak for everyone -- I probably speak for Quinnen -- in that we all want get done sooner rather than later," Saleh before practice. "I'll let the business guys handle all that stuff, but it's going to get done. He'll be here for camp. He'll be ready to roll and once he is, I'm sure it'll be the same guy who was here."

The question of whether Williams will report to next week's mandatory minicamp is moot, as Saleh announced he was cancelling it. He cited the early reporting date for training camp as the main reason, saying he wants to give the players a break after a productive offseason.

Because they play in the Hall of Fame Game on Aug. 3 -- they face the Cleveland Browns in Canton, Ohio -- the Jets will open camp a week earlier than usual. A date hasn't been announced, but it will be around July 19.

Williams, 25, due to make a guaranteed $9.6 million in the final year of his contract (his fifth-year option), said after the season that he wouldn't report until he receives a contract extension. He has, in fact, stayed away from all voluntary workouts, more than once expressing frustration on social media.

The two sides have talked sporadically throughout the offseason, with team officials giving positive updates at each turn.

The defensive tackle market has exploded in recent months, with Jeffery Simmons (Tennessee Titans), Dexter Lawrence (New York Giants) and Daron Payne (Washington Commanders) landing extensions in the range of $22.5 million to $23.5 million per year. Aaron Donald (Los Angeles Rams) is the highest-paid defensive tackle at $31.7 million per year.

Williams, coming off a 12-sack season that resulted in him being named first-team All-Pro, is thought to be seeking at least $23.5 million a year.

Meanwhile, quarterback Aaron Rodgers has returned to practice after missing more than a week with a strained right calf. Rodgers participated in all drills, except the 11-on-11 period.

Even though the practices are noncontact, Saleh said he wanted to keep Rodgers out of harm's way in full-team drills. Saleh didn't cancel minicamp because of the Rodgers injury; he made the decision several weeks ago.

Campbell: Lions' Goff 'better' QB than with Rams

ALLEN PARK, Mich. - Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell delivered a bold claim during Tuesday's mandatory minicamp session, calling Jared Goff "a better quarterback" in Detroit "than he was there" in Los Angeles -- despite leading the Rams to a Super Bowl appearance in 2018.

Campbell says he has witnessed maturity in Goff, 28, as he enters Year 3 with the Lions. Goff landed in Detroit after being traded in January 2021, along with a slew of draft picks, for Matthew Stafford.

After ending 3-13-1 in 2021, Goff led the Lions to their first winning season since 2017 as the team finished 9-8, winning eight of their final 10 games.

"He hung in there and I think what you're seeing is a guy who just put his head down and worked on what he could, tried to improve on what he could, and now his confidence is really, it has grown, and along the way, he's matured as a quarterback," Campbell said. "I mean, he's a better quarterback than he was there in my opinion because he can do more things. He's mentally on it.

"We've come light years ahead of where he was two years ago," he continued. "He's got a real good grasp of what we're doing, where the issues are, where the problems are and that's something that we really wanted him to get good at and he wanted to get good at and he's worked at it, and he's improved."

Campbell described Goff's mindset going into this year as "comfortable" after settling in the past two seasons.

He's coming off a season where he set the franchise record for the highest touchdown-to-interception ratio (4.14) after passing for 4,438 yards with 29 touchdowns to just seven interceptions. At one point, Goff completed 324 consecutive passes without a pick, which is the fifth-longest streak in league history.

"We ask him to do a lot more in my opinion than what [the Rams] were actually doing out there," Campbell said. "They had a lot of pretty good pieces out there as well as we know. Damn good defense. All those things, but I just feel like, I know from speaking with him and watching him really over the last two years, I just feel like ... we put a lot of things on him where I'm not so sure that was ultimately what they were doing."

Alvarez named new spokeswoman for MLBPA

NEW YORK -- Silvia Alvarez was appointed acting communications director of the Major League Baseball Players Association on Tuesday.

Alvarez takes over from communications director Chris Dahl, who shifts to senior adviser for communications and intends to retire on Jan. 1.

Alvarez joined the union in 2019 after working in the campaign and government offices of Senator Cory A. Booker and New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. She was senior vice president and director of corporate communications for First Horizon National Corp. and director of multicultural and charitable communications for Major League Baseball.

Dahl joined the MLBPA in June 1997 to oversee the launch of its first website and became director of communication in June 2019, 11 months after Greg Bouris resigned. A former sportswriter for The Associated Press, he spent two years as secretary-treasurer of the Wire Service Guild, representing AP and United Press International employees. He worked for Pinnacle Brands in baseball and football trading card marketing from 1991 to '96.

No. 1 prospect De La Cruz called up by Reds

Shortstop Elly De La Cruz, recently ranked as the No. 1 MLB prospect by ESPN, has been called up by the Cincinnati Reds, it was announced Tuesday.

De La Cruz was promoted from Triple-A Louisville and will join the Reds on Tuesday for the team's series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He takes the roster spot of Nick Senzel, who was placed on the injured list with a right knee injury.

De La Cruz was named baseball's top prospect by ESPN's Kiley McDaniel in his updated rankings last month.

The 21-year-old is hitting .296 with 12 home runs, 36 RBIs and an OPS of 1.031 in 158 at-bats this season. He started the season on the injured list after suffering a left hamstring strain during spring training.

Signed as an international free agent in 2018, De La Cruz has a .298 average with 49 home runs in 262 minor league games.

Senzel is hitting .258 with four home runs and 27 RBIs this season.

Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka said she does not support her president Alexander Lukashenko "right now" because of his backing of Russia's war in Ukraine.

Having declined to attend open news conferences at the French Open since Friday for her mental wellbeing after a series of political questions, Sabalenka resumed her regular media duties after reaching the semi-finals.

She had previously said "no athlete" supports the war but this is the first time she has spoken against Lukashenko.

"I don't support war," the 25-year-old said after her 6-4 6-4 win over Ukraine's Elina Svitolina. "I don't support Lukashenko right now."

Lukashenko is a close ally of Russia president Vladimir Putin, providing support in the invasion of Ukraine.

Sabalenka, who could become the women's world number one at the French Open, is one of Belarus' highest-profile athletes.

Since the war started in February 2022, she has been under pressure to distance herself from the nation's leader, whom she has met on several occasions in the past.

After the Minsk-born player won her first major at the Australian Open in January, Lukashenko congratulated Sabalenka on the triumph and was seen toasting her success in an online video.

He later said people knew which country she hailed from even if she was playing under a neutral flag.

"I said it many times already, I'm not supporting war. I don't want my country to be involved in any conflict," she said on Tuesday.

"I said it many times, and you know where I stand, you know. You have my position. You have my answer. I answered it many times. I'm not supporting the war.

"I don't want sport to be involved in politics, because I'm just a tennis player, a 25-years-old tennis player.

"If I would like to be political I wouldn't be here. I don't want to be involved in any politics. I just want to be a tennis player."

Sabalenka was speaking in her first open news conference since Wednesday, having skipped them after her previous two matches for her "own mental health and well-being".

She had been challenged by a Ukrainian reporter about Russia's invasion, supported by Belarus, saying she did not "feel safe" during Wednesday's news conference.

"I felt like my press conference became a political TV show, and I'm not expert in politics. I'm just a tennis player," she said.

"I had a few days to switch off from the press conference, few days to bring myself together, few days to realise a couple of things.

"That's why I feel safer. And nobody's putting words in my mouth, that's another reason."

Rory McIlroy will have his eyes set on a three-peat at this week's RBC Canadian Open, but he'll have a new course to learn as the event moves to Oakdale Golf and Country Club.

The Canadian Open moves around frequently with five different courses hosting since the 2011 edition.

This week's host venue is making its Canadian Open debut. They'll see a full field of 156 players and the 36-hole cutline will see the field trimmed to the low 65 and ties.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Rory McIlroy

He stumbled on Sunday at the Memorial but at least he was in the mix. After the round, he said he felt much more comfortable with his swing, which was a big improvement over his swing thoughts at the PGA Championship. McIlroy is the back-to-back champ at this event, both at different courses. He'll try for the rare "three wins at three separate venues" three-peat this week.

Corey Conners

You have to go back to 1954 to find the last time a Canadian-born golfer won this event. There have been many close calls and Conners likely provides the best chance to snap that slump this week. At 29th, he is the highest-ranked Canadian in the world and he finally got his first taste of success at this event last year. He twirled a sixth-place finish at St. George's after opening his tournament resume with five missed cuts and an 80th-place showing. Conners won two months ago at the Valero Texas Open and he's bagged two more top-15s in the five starts since the win.

Adam Hadwin

Looking at close calls from Canadians in their national open, Hadwin has more than his fair share. He was solo second ahead of the final round back in 2011 before finishing in a share of fourth place. He has two other top-10s on his tournament resume. If this turns into a scoring-fest then Hadwin has proven he can hang, evidenced by his strong track record at PGA West. He's also played well on tighter, tree-lined layouts, with big finishes at Colonial, Firestone and Innisbrook to name a few.

Mackenzie Hughes

If short game becomes a priority then Hughes would rise to the top in terms of Canadians to target. He ranks 18th on Tour in strokes gained: around the green and 40th in putting. He's finished T-32 or better in all four tries at this event since becoming a regular Tour member.

Ludvig Aberg

Gamers love to be early on the next big, breakout star so expect to see a lot of love for the Swede this week. Aberg played his way into the title of world No. 1 amateur, but he's made the leap to the pro ranks and he'll get his feet wet over the summer before having another full season of status in 2024. He's finished outside the top 50 in four of his five previous starts on the PGA Tour, but was T-12 through 54 holes at this year's Arnold Palmer Invitational (T-24).
