Fan charged over offensive jersey at FA Cup final

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 04 June 2023 10:25

London's Metropolitan Police said on Sunday that a football fan has been charged with wearing an offensive jersey to the FA Cup final that referred to the 1989 Hillsborough Stadium disaster where 97 Liverpool fans died.

James White, 33, of Warwickshire, will appear in court June 19 on a charge of displaying threatening or abusive writing likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

A photo retweeted by police after Saturday's match between Manchester City and Manchester United at Wembley Stadium showed a man wearing a United shirt with the No. 97 on the back and the words "Not Enough."

The English Football Association (FA) said that it spotted the offensive shirt on social media and security tracked down the man wearing it, leading to his arrest.

"We will not tolerate abuse relating to Hillsborough or any football tragedy at Wembley Stadium and we will continue to work with the authorities to ensure strong action is taken against perpetrators," the FA said in a statement.

The Hillsborough tragedy and other disasters in the sport continue to echo in football stadiums for the wrong reasons in what the Premier League has condemned as "tragedy chanting."

Two months ago, Chelsea apologised for its fans who taunted Liverpool visitors in chants that referred to Hillsborough. A few days earlier, City had apologized to Liverpool for similar hateful choruses of cheers.

In March, Liverpool and United jointly appealed to fans to end hateful chants before their match in Liverpool.

United suffered a 2-1 defeat in Saturday's FA Cup final against City after two superb strikes from Ilkay Gundogan.

More than 20 people were arrested at the match for assault, drug possession and drunk and disorderly behavior, police said.

Josh Hazlewood has lost his race to be fit for Australia's World Test Championship final against India. He has been replaced in the squad by Michael Neser. This makes Scott Boland a favourite to make the XI for the match, which starts on June 7 at The Oval.
Hazlewood, who picked up side soreness at the IPL, remains in Australia's squad for the Ashes, though, with chief selector George Bailey saying he remains in contention for the first of those Tests, in Edgbaston on June 16.

"Josh was very, very close to being given the green light but we are cognisant that our upcoming schedule [the WTC final quickly followed by five Ashes Tests] means this is not a one-off Test match of us.

"This will give Josh an ideal preparation leading into Edgbaston. With six Test matches in a little over seven weeks we will need all of our fast bowling assets."

Neser comes in on the back of a stint with Glamorgan on the county cricket circuit. Given the uncertainty over Hazlewood, Neser, along with Sean Abbott, had been pulled out of county duty to train with the Australian squad in Beckenham. "Michael's county form has been strong and knowing that he was going to be close by allowed for him to keep playing and for us to be able to call on him," Bailey said. "He is a great strength to have as part of the fast-bowling group."

Hazlewood had been withdrawn from the IPL after three games for Royal Challengers Bangalore, and at the time the decision was considered to be a precautionary measure, with scans clearing him of any damage to his side. The precautions were due to his recent run of injury, including two side strains over the past two years and an Achilles issue. This has all meant that he has only played four of Australia's last 19 Test matches and has not played in back-to-back first-class games since early 2021.

He was picked for the WTC final subject to proving his fitness with heavy training loads leading up to the game, and as recently as May 31 he was still very hopeful of making it. Sunday's announcement came after Hazlewood bowled three spells at training on Saturday.

As for the other specialist quicks in Australia's WTC squad, captain Pat Cummins is back after missing Australia's previous two Tests, in India, due to family reasons, and Mitchell Starc is fully fit having missed the first two games of that India series with a finger injury.

Yorkshire 170 for 3 (Malan 81*) beat Derbyshire 166 for 8 (Haider 74, Mike 3-39) by seven wickets

Wayne Madsen fell six runs short of becoming the first man in T20 history to score six successive fifties as his Derbyshire side were comfortably beaten by seven wickets by a revitalised Yorkshire in today's Vitality Blast clash at Headingley.
England's Dawid Malan then starred in the chase with a superb 81 not out off 57 balls, Yorkshire winning with 10 balls to spare.

Madsen's 44 off 26 in the Falcons 166 for 8 batting first means he remains one of seven players worldwide to have scored five fifties in a row in this format. Jos Buttler, Virender Sehwag and David Warner are on the list.

Pakistan overseas opener Haider Ali's belligerent 74 off 47 balls was the feature of Derbyshire's innings having been inserted, and also his best score for the county in all cricket since arriving in April. But Haider and Madsen falling in quick succession meant the innings lost crucial momentum from 147 for 2 in the 17th over.

That paved the way for the Vikings to win their third successive North Group fixture, backing up last week's successes over Nottinghamshire and Lancashire.

After three wickets for Ben Mike, Malan continued his excellent form with a third fifty in a row and could yet expand that aforementioned list of seven over the next week. The left-hander shared 83 inside 10 overs for the first wicket with Adam Lyth, who made 31, and continued on with almost effortless class in hitting nine fours and three sixes.

Both teams came into this fixture having had identical seasons - winless in the Championship, having lost their first three games in the Blast before winning their last two last week.

Yorkshire started well, with Derbyshire limited to 19 for 1 after four overs, including Mike getting Luis Reece caught scooping. But Haider counterattacked with success and ensured 40 runs came off the next four overs, playing confidently on both sides of the wicket in excellent batting conditions.

Tom Wood fell to legspinner Jafer Chohan's first ball in the ninth over - 59 for 2 - as he was brilliantly caught at a wide short third-man by a diving Will Luxton following a reverse sweep. But that strike only served to bring Madsen to the crease.

Both Haider, who reached 50 off 35 balls, and Madsen struck the ball cleanly during an 88-run partnership inside nine overs, though the wind was quickly taken out of Derbyshire's sails.

Madsen drilled David Wiese into the covers to end his shot at history, leaving Derbyshire 147 for 3 in the 17th over, before Haider was smartly caught by Wiese off Mike in the next. Mike also bowled a reverse sweeping Leus du Plooy before another three wickets fell in the last eight balls to give Yorkshire the definite advantage at halfway.

And it didn't take long for the result to become obvious as Lyth and Malan were quickly into their stride. Malan pulled seamer Zak Chappell for six over square leg and dominated the powerplay as 54 came from the first six overs.

Unlike Yorkshire, Derbyshire's bowlers just couldn't drag things back as they suffered defeat number four of the campaign.

Malan pulled his second six off George Scrimshaw's pace early in the eighth over, a vicious shot over midwicket to take him into the 40s, and by the time he reached 50 off 35 balls in the 11th over, Yorkshire were 103 for 1. Lyth had been bowled slog-sweeping at Wood's offspin before Will Luxton fell cheaply having miscued a pull at Scrimshaw to square leg, leaving the score at 110 for 2 after 12.

Yorkshire's target was reduced to 42 off the last five overs at 125 for 2, and a couple of lusty blows from Namibia international allrounder Wiese ended Malan's hopes of a sixth career T20 century but more importantly gave the hosts another two points.

Wiese actually fell for an entertaining 30 to Chappell, but it was nothing more than a consolatory wicket at 158 for 3 in the 18th over. That allowed Mike to clinch the win with a straight six off Zaman Khan in the 19th over.

The visitors are set to arrive on June 10. The home squad gathered for a training camp at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, the Test venue, on Sunday.

Taskin Ahmed, who was ruled out of the Ireland Test due to a side strain, comes back to the squad. Zakir Hasan also makes his return after missing the Ireland Test in April. He suffered a thumb injury after being picked in the ODI squad for the first time in March. His return means no place for Shadman Islam, while Shakib and Rejaur Rahman Raja are also out from the previous squad.

Shahadat was a member of the Bangladesh side that won the Under-19 World Cup in 2020, after which he sparkled in domestic competitions. A middle-order batter, he recently made two half-centuries in as many unofficial Tests against West Indies A.

Fast bowler Musfik burst onto the scene with a 25-wicket season, averaging 15.92, in the 2022-23 National Cricket League. He took 8 for 73 against Dhaka Division, only the third eight-wicket haul in domestic first-class cricket in Bangladesh. He bowled steadily against India A and West Indies A this season and was also part of a bowling group that Allan Donald worked with earlier this year.

Afghanistan will be in Bangladesh in two phases: the first involving the Test, the second involving three ODIs and two T20Is in July.

Bangladesh squad: Litton Das (capt), Tamim Iqbal, Zakir Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam, Khaled Ahmed, Ebadot Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Shahadat Hossain, Musfik Hasan.

Toss UAE chose to bat vs West Indies

UAE won the toss and chose to bat against West Indies in the first ODI series, in Sharjah on a hot Sunday afternoon. Captain Muhammad Waseem said at the toss that he felt it would be easy to put up a total.

West Indies had two debutants: spin-bowling allrounderKavem Hodge and fast-bowling allrounder Dominic Drakes. Drakes has played ten T20Is for West Indies and comes with an experience of 25 List-A games. Hodge is relatively more experienced, having featured in 47 List-A matches.
For UAE, 19-year-old left-hand batter Ali Naseer made his ODI debut.

This is West Indies' first outing under new white-ball coach Daren Sammy.

UAE: 1 Muhammad Waseem (capt), 2 Aryansh Sharma (wk), 3 Vriitya Aravind, 4 Rameez Shahzad, 5 Asif Khan, 6 Rohan Mustafa, 7 Ali Naseer, 8 Aayan Afzal Khan, 9 Karthik Meiyappan, 10 Junaid Siddique, 11 Zahoor Khan

West Indies: 1 Johnson Charles, 2 Brandon King, 3 Shamarh Brooks, 4 Shai Hope (capt, wk), 5 Keacy Carty, 6 Kavem Hodge, 7 Roston Chase, 8 Keemo Paul, 9 Yannic Cariah, 9 Odean Smith, 11 Dominic Drakes

The Blaze 198 for 6 (Sciver-Brunt 58, Gray 2-29) beat Sunrisers 114 (Glenn 2-9, de Klerk 2-10) by 84 runs

The Blaze maintained their 100% record in the Charlotte Edwards Cup as a crushing defeat of Sunrisers saw them clinch a direct route to the final at Worcester next Saturday with England's Nat Sciver-Brunt starring with bat and ball at a sun-drenched Trent Bridge.

Sciver-Brunt smashed 58 from 30 balls and took 2 for 16 as winless Sunrisers were bowled out for 114 in reply to the Blaze's 198 for 6, giving the east midlands side a bonus-point victory to make their position as group leaders unassailable, meaning they avoid the semi-final eliminator at Finals Day.

England team-mates Sarah Glenn, with 43 not out from 29 balls and two wickets for just nine runs from her legbreaks, and Tammy Beaumont (41 from 30) delivered as well, with overseas player Nadine de Klerk boosting her tally to 13 as the competition's leading wicket-taker, the South African taking 2 for 10 from three overs, strike bowler Sophie Munro grabbing 2 for 18.

Eva Gray, Kate Coppack and Abtaha Maqsood picked up two wickets each for the Sunrisers, for whom England Under-19 captain Grace Scrivens top-scored with 20.

Opting to bat first, the Blaze lost Sarah Bryce - Friday's matchwinner against Northern Diamonds with 67 from 43 balls - for effectively a first-ball duck after she inside-edged Gray on to her stumps, having watched two leg-side deliveries called as wides. Otherwise, the powerplay could hardly have been more one-sided as Beaumont and Sciver-Brunt peppered a fully-extended Trent Bridge boundary as first on the card in a double-header ahead of Notts Outlaws' meeting Lancashire Lightning.

They powered the Blaze to 77 for 1 from the opening six overs, a team record not only under their new identity but as Lightning and Loughborough Lightning too.

Sciver-Brunt completed her second Blaze half-century and looked in the mood for more as she and Beaumont added 102 in 53 balls for the second wicket, but after sweeping Maqsood's legspin for her first six, perished attempting a repeat, finding deep square leg, Blaze reaching halfway at 112 for 2.

A fine over from Coppack then changed the tone of the innings as the right-arm seamer had Beaumont leg before sweeping and dismissed Marie Kelly by the same method as the right-hander swung across the line for a second-ball duck. It took three lean overs before Glenn rediscovered the tempo with three boundaries in the same Jo Gardner over as the Blaze moved to 149 for 4 from 15.

Maqsood picked up a second wicket as Georgie Boyce was stumped but Glenn, who survived difficult chances on 29 and 40 on the way a career-best score in this format, added 35 in 21 balls with de Klerk before the South African top-edged Gray to mid-off, helping Blaze post the third-highest total in the competition this season.

It put Sunrisers under scoreboard pressure from the start and though 46 runs in the powerplay was respectable they came at a cost of three important wickets as Mady Villiers chipped Glenn's legspin straight to mid-off, Alice Macleod was pinned in front by Sciver-Brunt and South African Dane Van Niekerk top-edged to cover in the same over.

At 64 for 4, southeast regional side Sunrisers were well behind the required rate at the halfway stage and seen Amara Carr depart to Glenn as skipper Kirstie Gordon took a good catch running round from midwicket.

Three wickets in the space of five balls hastened the inevitable Blaze win as Florence Miller was run out at the non-striker's end before de Klerk took two in three balls to remove Gardner leg before and Scrivens, the England Under-19 captain, who batted nicely before skying one to midwicket.

Grace Ballinger had Gray caught at short fine leg before Coppack and Kelly Castle held things up, adding 28 in a little under five overs before Munro bowled both in the final over.

Miyu Kato and Aldila Sutjiadi were disqualified from the French Open on Sunday after a ball hit by Kato struck a ball girl during their women's doubles third-round match.

Kato and Sutjiadi were a set down to Marie Bouzkova and Sara Sorribes Tormo but 3-1 up in the second when Kato sent the ball to the opposite end of the court between points, hitting the ball girl and leaving her in distress.

Umpire Alexandre Juge gave Kato a warning before Bouzkova and Sorribes Tormo, on the other side of the net, asked for their opponents to be disqualified.

"No, no, let me explain to you. [Kato] didn't do it on purpose. [The ball girl] didn't get injured," Juge said.

"She didn't do it on purpose? She's crying," Sorribes Tormo said.

"And she has blood," Bouzkova added, prompting the umpire to go to see the ball girl, who was sobbing.

Juge spoke to the girl, and tournament referee Remy Azemar and Grand Slam supervisor Wayne McEwen went to Court 14 to look into what happened. Juge then went back up to his chair and announced the end of the match with the disqualification of Sutjiadi and Kato, who had apologized and was in tears as she left the court.

"It's just a bad situation for everyone," Bouzkova said. "But it's kind of something that, I guess, is taken by the rules, as it is, even though it's very unfortunate for them. ... At the end of the day, it was the referee's decision."

Bouzkova said she did not see the ball girl get hit but added that "she was crying for like 15 minutes."

In the quarterfinals, Bouzkova and Sorribes Tormo will face Ellen Perez and Nicole Melichar-Martinez.

Novak Djokovic inched closer to a record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam title by crushing Juan Pablo Varillas 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 on Sunday to reach the French Open quarterfinals.

No. 3 Djokovic, who is currently tied with Rafael Nadal with 22 major titles, was untroubled by his 94th-ranked opponent, the first Peruvian in 29 years to reach a Grand Slam fourth round, on a windy day on Court Philippe Chatrier.

He attacked Varillas at every opportunity to avoid being drawn into lengthy baseline battles that had seen the 27-year-old win all of his three previous rounds in five-set marathons.

Varillas lost the vast majority of the shorter rallies and could not find a way back into the match. Djokovic faces No. 11 Karen Khachanov in the quarterfinals.

A two-time champion in Paris, Djokovic has now reached the quarterfinals at the French Open for a record 17th time, one more than Nadal, who missed the tournament this year and recently underwent hip surgery.

Djokovic's 14 straight quarterfinal appearances at Roland Garros also set a record for the most consecutive quarterfinals by a male player in the Open era (since 1968), according to ESPN Stats & Information. Jimmy Connors reached 13 straight US Open quarterfinals from 1973 to 1985. The second-longest streak at the French Open is nine by Roger Federer from 2005 to 2013.

"I am proud of all the records, but it also means I am not young anymore," said the 36-year-old Djokovic. "It was the best level of tennis I have played here, so I am very satisfied."

Djokovic finished with more than twice as many winners, 35-15, and fewer unforced errors. He went 15-for-17 on trips to the net. He put in 80% of his first serves. He converted 6 of 12 break points while dropping his serve only once.

Khachanov showed good resilience to down Italian Lorenzo Sonego 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7), 6-1 and reach the French Open quarterfinals for the second time.

The Russian player looked out of sorts in the opening set before finding his range on Court Suzanne Lenglen, using his forehand to devastating effect.

Sonego never recovered from wasting a 4-0 advantage in the third-set tiebreak, which proved to be the turning point. He fell 5-6 behind and saved the first set point but served a double fault on the second.

"After the first set and a half, I was thinking, what am I doing here? He was hitting all over the place, so I decided all I could do was fight," said Khachanov, who made it to the semifinals in the past two Grand Slams at the US Open and Australian Open.

Khachanov is 0-2 in Grand Slams against Djokovic, including a straight-sets loss in 2020, and 1-8 overall, losing their past seven meetings.

Sonego was strong on serve, not facing a single break point, as he outplayed his opponent in a one-sided opening set that he sealed when Khachanov netted a cross-court forehand.

Khachanov brought his best game into the second set to level the contest. Losing the third set broke Sonego's momentum, and his game, while a pumped-up Khachanov skated through the fourth set, prevailing on the first match point.

Banged-up Bogaerts hopes to avoid trip to IL

Published in Baseball

San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts is expected to get some time off because of his nagging left wrist injury but hopes to avoid a trip to the injured list.

Bogaerts, who left Saturday's victory over the Chicago Cubs in the eighth inning, played through wrist discomfort earlier in his career. The four-time All-Star told reporters that he doesn't think he needs to go on the IL, but he also said "enough is enough" when asked about the injury after the game.

Bogaerts has been playing through the injury since early May but said he wanted to stay in the lineup while fellow Padres star Manny Machado was out. Machado returned to the lineup Friday after missing nearly three weeks with a hand injury.

"I probably haven't played this long with it," Bogaerts told reporters, according to MLB.com. "I knew Manny was hurt and I felt like I want to go out there, and I want to be there. Obviously, now he's back. ... Let's see how it is. Then once it's feeling right, all we've got to work on is getting rid of the bad habits you created with that."

Padres manager Bob Melvin said Bogaerts will undergo further examination and likely miss Sunday's game against the Cubs.

"He was feeling it -- it looked like the last couple at-bats almost on every swing," Melvin said, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. "We'll take a look at him tomorrow, probably end up giving him an off day. We'll see how he responds."

Bogaerts, 30, is batting .252 with seven home runs and 21 RBIs in 57 games this season, the first of his 11-year, $280 million deal with the Padres. The five-time Silver Slugger got off to a hot start but is batting just .195 over his past 32 games and has only one home run since May 1.

Novak Djokovic is bidding for history at this year's French Open, where a win would put him ahead of Rafael Nadal with a record 23rd men's Grand Slam singles titles.

The Serb has beaten 11 players on his way to his 22 Grand Slam titles - some are easy to guess, some a little more challenging.

You've got two minutes - the length of times players get between sets - to name them all. How many can you get?

Can you name all the players Novak Djokovic has beaten in Grand Slam finals?
