Boone: Yankees 'hell bent on being a champion'

Published in Baseball
Wednesday, 14 February 2024 13:56

TAMPA, Fla, -- Aaron Boone says his New York Yankees are "hell bent on being a champion" after missing the playoffs for the first time since 2016.

New York started spring training Wednesday still in search of its first title since 2009. The Yankees went 82-20 last year, nearly finishing with a losing record for the first time 1992.

"Last year was not anything anyone in this organization wants or demands or expect," the manager said Wednesday. "I would say we have poured into that. From ownership, to the front office, to the coaches and staff all the way to the players that I do feel like we have prepared properly. We are ready to roll."

Boone revealed right-hander Scott Effross had a setback in his return from Tommy John surgery on Oct. 13, 2022, and probably won't be available for the Yankees until summer. Effross had back surgery in early December and started a throwing program last week.

Catcher Jose Trevino strained a calf muscle and will miss the first couple of weeks of spring training games. Boone is hopeful he will be ready for opening day.

In addition, reliever Lou Trivino was in camp and was set to agree to a $1.5 million, one-year contract. He had Tommy John surgery last May 3.

New York hoped to revive an offense that was 29th in the major leagues in batting at .227, acquiring outfielders Juan Soto and Alex Verdugo acquired in trades. Aaron Judge, D.J LeMahieu, Giancarlo Stanton and Anthony Rizzo all were slowed by injuries last year.

"We got to go prove it," Boone said. "So, I think we have a chance to be a really special team. That's all it is right. We got to go show the world that we're as good as we think we can be."

Boone compared last year to getting sand kicked in the face.

"You know, obviously, going through with what we went through last year as a club, nobody wants that ever again, and that is really left a sour taste," Boone said. "I do feel like we have a group that is always really focused and diligent on on preparing and getting ready to go out have a great season. But I do think there's another level of edge and focus to not wanting that to have that happen again, and we have a lot of guys with pride in there."

Sources: MLB to crack down on obstruction rule

Published in Baseball
Wednesday, 14 February 2024 13:56

Major League Baseball intends to strictly enforce the obstruction rule around the bases this season, instructing umpires to be more diligent in calling the infraction, sources tell ESPN.

The league is holding a videoconference call with managers on Wednesday to inform teams.

Obstruction is defined as the act of a fielder who, while not in possession of the ball and not in the act of fielding the ball, impedes the progress of any runner. The league is focused on the latter part of the rule as it believes infielders are blocking runners' paths to the bag under the guise of fielding the ball from a teammate.

The enhanced enforcement of the rule, which is already on the books, will mostly impact plays around second and third base. The most common infraction is when a middle infielder puts his lower leg on the ground to block the runner's path to second, sometimes leading to hand or ankle injuries depending on how a runner slides. A common infraction at third base involves an infielder moving up the line to block a runner's path as he receives the ball from an outfielder.

Umpires have been instructed to call the runner safe due to obstruction unless the infielder must move into the path of the runner to receive the ball.

In the past, players would police themselves, going into a bag with spikes up or even just blowing up an infielder who was blocking his path. Those acts are frowned upon in today's game, which has led to infielders taking more liberties with blocking a base.

The league is instructing teams to tell their players it is OK to straddle the bag or stand in front or behind it, but not to go to a knee or block the path of the runner unless moving to receive the ball. The call is a judgment one that is not reviewable.

In pre-series meetings, teams would often warn their baserunners of notorious blocking culprits. Josh Donaldson, Ozzie Albies and Bryson Stott are a few of the infielders whose names come up often when it comes to blocking the bases.

The league has been closely monitoring play around the bases since 2021 and came close to enhanced enforcement of obstruction last year, according to sources familiar with their thinking. But with other major rule changes being instituted -- including using bigger bases -- they opted to see if the trend continued. Now they want umpires cracking down and behavior around the bases to change accordingly.

Though umpires could call obstruction more during spring training, most players aren't playing at full speed, so the increase in calls might not start until the regular season.

Published in Tennis

Former world number one Naomi Osaka is into the quarter-finals of a tournament for the first time in nearly two years.

The 26-year-old reached the last eight at the Qatar Open after her opponent Lesia Tsurenko withdrew before the match through injury.

Osaka returned to tennis last month after giving birth to her daughter Shai in July.

The run in Doha is her best since reaching the final of the Miami Open in April 2022, losing to Iga Swiatek.

A four-time major winner, Japan's Osaka will face an in-form Karolina Pliskova in the quarter-finals.

The Czech former world number one, who won her first WTA title in four years at the Transylvania Open on Sunday, beat compatriot Linda Noskova 3-6 7-5 6-1.

Elsewhere in Doha, Australian Open runner-up Zheng Qinwen was defeated 7-5 6-3 by Canada's Leylah Fernandez, while Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova suffered a 7-5 6-3 loss to Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Player Watch: Who Will Steal the Show in Busan?

Published in Table Tennis
Wednesday, 14 February 2024 00:47

As the ITTF World Team Table Tennis Championships Finals Busan 2024 draws near, anticipation builds with each passing day. The stage is set at the BEXCO Convention Centre, where an array of talented players from across the globe will converge for this prestigious event.

Featuring a constellation of top-tier athletes, the competition for the coveted Swaythling and Corbillon Cups promises to be nothing short of captivating. Here are some of the compelling teams and players to watch out for in Busan.

Reigning Champs Field Superstar Line-up

Defending the Mens Team and Womens Team titles, China has turned to its biggest superstars in a bid to bring home both trophies for a record-extending 23rd time.

World champion Fan Zhendong headlines the Mens Team, with World No.2 Wang Chuqin and reigning Olympic champion Ma Long also making the line-up. Ma achieved a 100%-win record two years back at the 2022 World Team Championships in Chengdu, winning all seven of his encounters.

Navigating their way through the Womens Team draw without dropping a single game in Chengdu, Sun Yingsha, Wang Yidi and Chen Meng all make the Womens Team squad again. Chinas strength in depth is bolstered further by Wang Manyu and Chen Xingtong on the Womens side, while Liang Jingkun and Lin Gaoyuan provide support in the Mens Team event.

Sibling Rivalry

One of Chinas most prominent challengers on both team fronts, Japan looks to the Harimoto family for inspiration. Tomokazu Harimoto won 11 of his 12 individual matches at Chengdu 2022, including semifinal victories over Wang Chuqin and Fan Zhendong as Japan finished in the bronze medal position. Meanwhile, younger sister Miwa Harimoto (age 15) makes her World Team Championships debut, and is not to be underestimated despite her young age.

The family business continues in the Mens Team draw, with brothers Felix Lebrun and Alexis Lebrun leading the line for France. Rising to a career-best position of World No.6 at just 17 years of age, Felix won his first WTT Star Contender title last month in Goa, and with Alexis also coming on leaps and bounds in the last two years, France has a potential medal finish in its sights.

Then theres the Diaz sisters from Puerto Rico. Adriana Diaz and Melanie Diaz both featured prominently two years ago in Chengdu, as the Puerto Rican team reached the Womens Team round of 16 for the first time. Now, Adriana and Melanie are back for more in Busan. However, they are not the only siblings from the Americas taking part, with Bruna Takahashi and Giulia Takahashi back in the Brazilian ranks for Busan.

Fresh Look Chinese Taipei Team Looks To Reignite Spark

Suffering a shock Mens Team group stage exit at the 2022 World Team Championships, Chinese Taipei is going for a bolder approach this time out in Busan with fresh faces leading the way.

Lin Yun-Ju (22), Feng Yi-Hsin (21) and Kao Cheng-Jui (19) all make the squad this time out, while Huang Yan-Cheng (20) and the vastly experienced Chuang Chih-Yuan (42) are the players retained from the team fielded two years ago.

Chinese Taipei found themselves at the bottom of Group 7, with no victories and three defeats. Yet, the question remains: How will this revamped squad perform on the team stage?

Hosts Go All Out In Busan

Playing for home pride, Korea Republic has gone all out in its squad selection for Busan as the hosts go in search of silverware.

Falling at the semifinal hurdle two years back in Chengdu, the Mens Team outfit sees Jang Woojin and An Jaehyun return to the fold, and this time theyre joined by World Top 30 players Lim Jonghoon and Lee Sang Su, both of whom were absent from the 2022 line-up.

However, its arguably the Womens Team line-up that includes the biggest addition for Korea Republic, with World No.8 Shin Yubin carrying the hopes of a nation on her shoulders. Korea Republic struggled from the off two years back, squeezing through its group in third place before exiting in the round of 16. Two years on, expectations are greater, especially in front of the home crowd. Can Shins addition to the roster make the difference?

A Truly Global Affair

Welcoming players from all corners of the world to its shores, Busan will provide the stage for a truly global event, with the biggest names from all the continents ready to do their countries proud.

Dina Meshref and Hana Goda star in an ever-improving Egyptian Womens Team thatll be pushing for group stage qualification, while Australias Mens Team features talented teenagers Nicholas Lum, 2023 Oceania champion Aditya Sareen, and Finn Luu, all of whom carry World Top 60 status.

That is just the tip of the iceberg, with 40 teams contesting each of the Mens Team and Womens Team disciplines in Busan. View the complete player list here

Northampton back Ramm signs new two-year deal

Published in Rugby
Wednesday, 14 February 2024 04:35

Northampton Saints back James Ramm has become the latest player to sign a new contract with the Premiership leaders.

But he has been restricted to just seven appearances so far this season because of a knee injury.

"This year is a bit of a setback but results are definitely going in the right direction, so why wouldn't we want to stay," the 25-year-old said.

"I came over for a bit of exposure to something different and the long-term thing was always a bit of a goal, so it's really nice to be able to say 'yeah, we're here for another two [seasons].

"I'm not ready to go home, I feel like I've just started my journey here," he told BBC Radio Northampton.

Ramm, who can play at full-back or on the wing, won two player of the season awards at Northampton last term but has not played for Saints since a 36-33 win over Harlequins on 24 November.

The club say, however, that he is now "closing in on a return to action".

His new deal follows those signed by team-mates Tom Lockett, Tarek Haffar, Alex Mitchell, George Hendy, Sam Graham, Robbie Smith, Tom James, George Furbank, Alex Coles and Fraser Dingwall.

Ramm played for the Wallabies at age-group level but has yet to win a senior international cap.

"I don't know what's going on with them at the moment. It looks like there's a bit of restructuring to be done and I'm happy to keep my nose out of it," he added.

Harlequins wing Lynagh makes Italy training squad

Published in Rugby
Wednesday, 14 February 2024 09:31

Louis Lynagh has been picked for Italy's training squad before their Six Nations game against France.

The 23-year-old son of former Australia captain Michael Lynagh was born in Italy, where his father also played for the Treviso-based club.

Lynagh joined an England training squad in 2021 but was never capped, although he has played for England Under-20s.

Italy head coach Gonzalo Quesada announced the inclusion of Lynagh, who is also eligible to play for Australia, in their latest training squad on Wednesday.

The training camp begins in Rome on Sunday, 18 February, a week before Italy travel to Lille to face France in their next match of the 2024 Six Nations.

Italy were edged out by England in their opening match before falling to a heavy defeat by Ireland last time out.

Italy Six Nations squad

Backs: Alessandro Garbisi, Martin Page-Relo, Stephen Varney, Paolo Garbisi, Leonardo Marin, Juan Ignacio Brex, Tommaso Menoncello, Federico Mori, Marco Zanon, Ange Capuozzo, Monty Ioane, Simone Gesi, Louis Lynagh, Francois Mey, Lorenzo Pani.

Is Ireland's Lowe the best winger in the Six Nations?

Published in Rugby
Tuesday, 13 February 2024 23:55

Which BBC Sport pundit said James Lowe was "too heavy, too big and too slow"?

It's safe to say that former England winger Chris Ashton, who made the comments after England beat Ireland in 2020 - and has since apologised - has changed his opinion now.

"I did it for this effect," Ashton said with a smile when asked about his comments on Six Nations Rugby Special. "He's got a lot to thank me for, actually."

With sights firmly set on back-to-back Grand Slams, Lowe was player of the match as the Ireland juggernaut steamrolled Italy in Dublin.

He contributed the fifth of Ireland's six tries with a superb solo score as he collected a pass outside the 22 and showed tremendous power and poise to drag three Italian shirts over the line with him as he touched down.

At the other end, the 31-year-old's left boot, which he admits "is a bit of a ticket" in modern rugby, helped Ireland gain useful territory and only three players have kicked more after two rounds of fixtures.

Lowe has also made the most line breaks and made the most ground, with 157m gained so far, and his defensive decision-making has been spot-on in the opening two rounds.

"He's just a powerful winger with that all-round game," Ashton added.

"I think with his skills, there is no winger right now in the Six Nations who has that. There's finishing, the French wingers [Damian] Penaud and [Louis] Bielle-Biarrey will have something to say about that.

"But in terms of what he is doing for Ireland and the effect he has, whether that is exit, defensively or finishing, I don't think there is anyone better."

High praise indeed. So is Lowe the best all-round winger in the tournament? If not him, then who takes the crown?

Damian Penaud (France)

Age: 27 Caps: 49 Tries: 36

If this question was about the best finisher, then Damian Penaud may already have this one sewn up. His strike rate of 36 tries in 49 caps - including six at the World Cup - is absolutely frightening and he was a rare ray of light in France's opening-day defeat by the Irish.

The Bordeaux Begles man has had limited chances so far in this Six Nations but his time to shine will surely come.

Louis Bielle-Biarrey (France)

Age: 20 Caps: 10 Tries: Six

While we have known about Penaud's quality for a while, his partner-in-crime Louis Bielle-Biarrey has burst on to the scene.

The 20-year-old was described as "the young genius on the wing" after his stunning solo try against Scotland - which ultimately secured the win.

It might be too early in his career to properly judge his all-round game, but Bielle-Biarrey definitely has star quality.

Duhan van der Merwe (Scotland)

Age: 28 Caps: 36 Tries: 23

Fast, dynamic and freakishly strong, Duhan van der Merwe is one of the hardest players to stop in full flight. We all know about his try-scoring capabilities, such as his Twickenham stunner in 2023 and another solo effort against Wales on the opening weekend.

The 28-year-old's (just about legal) tackle on Gael Fickou denied the French centre a try-scoring opportunity on Saturday. When Van der Merwe plays well, so do Scotland.

Rio Dyer (Wales)

Age: 24 Caps: 16 Tries: Five

The wizard on the wing, Rio Dyer is a crucial part of Warren Gatland's Wales rebuild.

He's the only other player to make as many line breaks as Lowe in the championship so far, and he's doing it in a team struggling for confidence and form.

He also gets an extra mark for his chargedown on George Ford's 'conversion' attempt.

Elliot Daly (England)

Age: 31 Caps: 64 Tries: 18

While 18 tries from 64 Tests isn't exactly prolific, we're looking at the full skillset and that is where Elliot Daly shines. His versatility means he can play wing, centre or even slot in at full-back.

He's industrious rather that spectacular, but that is no slight on the Saracens man's ability, and he was an unsung hero of England's three Six Nations titles since he made his debut in 2016.

With a thumping left boot, he's also a very handy option from the kicking tee.

The other contenders

Italy's Monty Ioane was impressive against England but barely had a sniff against Ireland, while Wales' Josh Adams has failed to hit the heights of previous campaigns.

Calvin Nash has had an assured start to his Six Nations career on the opposite wing to Lowe as he steps in for the injured Mack Hansen, but he probably lacks the X-factor of his Ireland team-mate, and Tommy Freeman has looked promising in the white of England.

The missing men

While Lowe has been making headlines, his Ireland team-mate Mack Hansen would be in with a shout if he had not been ruled out of the tournament through injury.

The absent Darcy Graham also falls into this category after some impressive performances for Scotland, while Wales' Louis Rees-Zammit has swapped rugby for American football.

Henry Arundell and Anthony Watson are unavailable for England, while Jonny May has hung up his international boots.

So does anyone take the crown from Lowe? Have your say below.

Tuilagi included in England squad to face Scotland

Published in Rugby
Wednesday, 14 February 2024 09:21

Centre Manu Tuilagi has been included in England's initial 36-man squad preparing to face Scotland in the Six Nations at Murrayfield on 24 February.

Tuilagi, 32, has recovered from a groin injury and is joined by hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie and lock George Martin.

Fly-half Marcus Smith and centre Ollie Lawrence will also join the squad as they continue their rehabilitation.

However, hooker Jamie Blamire, flanker Tom Pearson and utility back Oscar Beard drop out.

Tuilagi is expected to compete with Fraser Dingwall for the inside centre position against Scotland.

Dingwall made his Test debut in the opening win over Italy before retaining his place and scoring his first England try in the victory over Wales.

The Northampton centre says Tuilagi's recall will provide him with "very healthy competition" in the squad.

"Manu offers something different to the centre than we have and he is very experienced," Dingwall told BBC Sport.

"I have spent time with Manu before and have learned from him. If we can find a way where we can compliment each other in training as well, then that will benefit the squad."

England have won both of their opening Six Nations matches for the first time in five years.

However, they have lost their past three meetings with Scotland, who were beaten by France in their last match.

England's Six Nations squad

Forwards: Ollie Chessum, Dan Cole, Alex Coles, Luke Cowan-Dickie, Chandler Cunningham-South, Ben Curry, Theo Dan, Alex Dombrandt, Ben Earl, Charlie Ewels, Ellis Genge, Jamie George (capt), Joe Heyes, Maro Itoje, Joe Marler, Beno Obano, George Martin, Ethan Roots, Will Stuart, Sam Underhill.

Backs: Danny Care, Elliot Daly, Fraser Dingwall, Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, George Ford, Tommy Freeman, George Furbank, Alex Mitchell, Will Muir, Max Ojomoh, Tom Roebuck, Henry Slade, Fin Smith, Ben Spencer, Freddie Steward, Manu Tuilagi.
