Rozier, Richardson slated for MRIs after Heat loss

Published in Basketball
Sunday, 11 February 2024 15:53

MIAMI -- Terry Rozier and Josh Richardson suffered injuries Sunday as the Miami Heat dropped a 110-106 decision to the Boston Celtics.

Rozier, who finished with 13 points, landed awkwardly on his right leg after driving to the basket midway through the third quarter. Both players will have MRI exams Monday, coach Erik Spoelstra said.

The Heat were already without star forward Jimmy Butler, who was ruled out earlier in the day because of personal reasons as he "deals with the death of a family member," according to a statement the Heat provided via Butler's agent, Bernie Lee.

"It's tough to see guys like that go down," Miami's Duncan Robinson said. "And then Jimmy dealing with what he's dealing with is unfortunate, to put it lightly."

Richardson exited in the second quarter because of a right shoulder injury. He slumped to the floor in pain after his unsuccessful attempt to strip Jayson Tatum of the ball.

"I felt my shoulder pop out on the floor and then it popped back in laying on the ground, so thank goodness for that," Richardson said. "I'll know more tomorrow."

Robinson also favored his left shoulder after Brown pushed him off into the stands when both tangled for position early in the fourth quarter. Brown and Robinson exchanged words and Brown was assessed a flagrant foul 1.

"I just thought it was a dirty play, to be honest with you. ... Just thought it was dangerous, unnecessary and excessive," Robinson said.

Jayson Tatum had 26 points, 10 rebounds and 9 assists for the Boston Celtics, who withstood a late rally from the hosts.

Kristaps Porzingis had 25 points, Jaylen Brown had 20 and Jrue Holiday scored 15 for Boston, which hit 16 of 39 3-point attempts.

The Celtics have won all three matchups with the Heat this season and have won six of the past seven games against them. The loss came in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals last season, when Boston forced the deciding game after losing the first three.

"Late-game execution, you've got to set the table," Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla said. "I think our guys did that."

Tyler Herro had 22 of his 24 points in the second half, Bam Adebayo scored 22 and Robinson and Caleb Martin finished with 15 points each for the Heat.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Brown, Robinson beef during, after Celtics-Heat

There was no love lost between Jaylen Brown and Duncan Robinson during Sunday's Celtics-Heat showdown in Miami, and tensions didn't cool much after Boston's 110-106 win.

Midway through the fourth quarter, the two players got tangled up when Brown tried to collect a Derrick White pass on the perimeter. Robinson's arm latched onto the Celtics All-Star, who appeared to pull on it, sending the Heat sharpshooter into the stands.

Brown and Robinson exchanged words at the free throw line, and the former was assessed a flagrant foul 1.

Speaking after the game, Robinson took issue with the play, calling it "dirty."

"Just thought it was dangerous, unnecessary and excessive," he said.

Brown had no issue with his own actions, instead laying the blame on Robinson.

"There was no issue for me," he said. "I think he knew exactly what he was trying to do. Trying to get tangled up, etc., because he didn't want to play defense. They called the foul, but he was still trying to hang on, so I was trying to get my arm free.

"Miami's known for being physical. Miami's known for getting away with a lot of that stuff, kind of mucking up the game. You know, at the end of the day, you got to protect and own your space. I feel like Duncan Robinson knew what he was doing there, trying to get tangled up, trying to draw whatever. I don't know what he was trying to do, but I bet you he won't do it again."

Boston coach Joe Mazzulla said he had no problem with the exchange and appreciated the "passion" of the moment.

"I thought JB handled it really well," he said. "I really liked the altercation at the free throw line afterward [when the two exchanged words]. I thought that was tremendous and it was great for us. It was beautiful."

The Heat ousted the Celtics in the Eastern Conference finals last year, winning a seven-game thriller. But they're 0-3 against Boston after Sunday's game, the final time they'll meet this regular season.

Athletics world stunned by the news on Sunday that the Kenyan athlete and coach Gervais Hakizimana died in a road accident

Seb Coe, president of World Athletics, led the tributes to marathon world record-holder Kelvin Kiptum and his coach Gervais Hakizimana after the Kenyan media reported they had died in a car crash.

We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the devastating loss of Kelvin Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana, said Coe. On behalf of all World Athletics we send our deepest condolences to their families, friends, team-mates and the Kenyan nation.

It was only earlier this week in Chicago, the place where Kelvin set his extraordinary marathon world record, that I was able to officially ratify his historic time. An incredible athlete leaving an incredible legacy, we will miss him dearly.

Kiptum, who was 24, along with Rwandas Hakizimana, were in a car accident in the Kaptagat area at 11pm local time on Sunday (Feb 11).

According to the Nation newspaper, Kiptum was driving a Toyota Premio when he lost control of the vehicle. Kiptum and Hakizimana died at the scene while a third passenger was taken to the hospital.

Kelvin Kiptum (Getty)

He set a world record of 2:00:35 in Chicago last October. It was just his third marathon, after running a world record for a debut of 2:01:53 in Valencia in December 2022 and a London Marathon course record of 2:01:25 in April 2023.

On April 14 in Rotterdam, he was aiming to become the first man to break the two-hour barrier in an official race. Indeed, little over a week ago he was revealed by smart watch brand Amazfit as their new ambassador, although he did not make the event where the announcement was made in Paris due to travel problems.

The athletics world was also looking forward to him taking on former world record-holder Eliud Kipchoge, among others, at the Paris Olympics this year.

The World Marathon Majors said on Sunday: The entire Abbott World Marathon Majors family is devastated by the news that our mens series champion and world record-holder Kelvin Kiptum and his coach Gervais Hakizimana have passed away. All of our thoughts are with their family and friends at this time.

The London Marathon posted on social media: We are shocked and deeply saddened to hear the terrible news of the death of marathon world record-holder Kelvin Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana. The thoughts of everyone at the TCS London Marathon are with Kelvins and Gervais family and friends.

Kenyas minister for sports Ababu Namwamba said on social media: Devastatingly sickening!! Kenya has lost a special gem. Lost for words.

Watson and Dart both defeated in doubles finals

Britain's Heather Watson and doubles partner Linda Noskova suffered a 6-4 7-6 (7-4) defeat by Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Sofia Kenin in the final of the Abu Dhabi Open on Sunday.

Watson and her Czech partner forced a tie-break in the second set but the American duo closed the match out.

Briton Harriet Dart and Tereza Mihalikova of Slovakia were beaten in the final of the Transylvania Open.

They went down 6-3 6-4 to the United States' Caty McNally and Asia Muhammad.

Earlier in the week, Dart reached her first semi-final on the WTA Tour in the singles tournament, losing to Karolina Pliskova.

It helped the 27-year-old climb back into the top 100 of the world rankings.

In the final of the singles at the Abu Dhabi Open, world number five Elena Rybakina cruised to a 6-1 6-4 victory over Daria Kasatkina.

The top seed from Kazakhstan wrapped up the win in 68 minutes against her Russian opponent in Doha to secure her seventh career title.

Ireland too strong for Italy in bonus-point win

Published in Rugby
Sunday, 11 February 2024 09:47

Ireland maintained their push for successive Six Nations Grand Slams with a comfortable, if sometimes scrappy, bonus-point win over Italy in Dublin.

First-half tries from Jack Crowley, Dan Sheehan and Jack Conan put the Irish 19-0 up at half-time.

Sheehan added his second to give Ireland the bonus point before Robbie Henshaw had a score ruled out.

But James Lowe scored the pick of the tries before Calvin Nash capped Ireland's win late on.

While this Irish performance will not live long in the memory, it maintains their momentum going into a rest week before hosting Wales on 24 February as they bid to become the first side since France in 1998 to win back-to-back Grand Slams.

For Italy, it is another dispiriting visit to Dublin and a hugely disappointing performance after giving England a scare in their opening match in Rome last week.

Ireland on top at the break after scrappy half

Having secured one of their greatest Six Nations wins over France in Marseille last week, Ireland were fancied to sweep past the Italians with little fuss in their first home match since the World Cup.

And even with six changes to the side that started the win over France - some of which were injury enforced - the hosts, captained by Caelan Doris for the first time, proved too strong for the Italians as the reigning champions registered a 17th successive home win.

Going into Sunday's game, Ireland had scored 50 points in each of their last four home Six Nations wins over Italy, but they were not fluent enough to tear the Azzurri apart during a scrappy first half.

After Paolo Garbisi's early missed penalty, Ireland struck with their first meaningful venture into Italian territory when a move started by the excellent Hugo Keenan - who later went off injured - was finished by Crowley for the fly-half's first senior try.

The next 15 minutes were scrappy, disjointed and not overly entertaining. Italy enjoyed their fair share of possession but were not clinical enough.

Ireland's kicking game was a little erratic, but despite letting errors creep into their game, they moved further clear when Sheehan struck again after his score in Marseille last week.

Crowley sent Henshaw clear with a clever offload. Henshaw found his midfield partner Stuart McCloskey, who teed up Sheehan for the Leinster hooker's first of the afternoon.

The third Irish try was down to the forwards, with Conan touching the ball down from close range after a catch and drive pushed Ireland close to the Italian line. An increasingly confident Crowley drilled superb conversions for the second and third tries after misjudging his first.

While it took Ireland a while to get going in the first half, Italy offered little during the opening stages of the second period. The Irish duly capitalised, with Sheehan crossing after another driving maul to give the hosts the bonus point.

A few moments later, a matter of inches denied Sheehan his hat-trick as he popped up on the left wing. Having kept the move alive, Ireland did get over the line through Henshaw but the celebrations were cut short when it was ruled out for a double movement.

Italy's problems mounted when centre Tommaso Menoncello was yellow-carded for tripping a charging Lowe just before the hour mark.

It failed to faze Lowe, though, as the Ireland wing dusted himself down to score the pick of the Irish tries with a magnificent demonstration of speed and power driving him over the line despite the presence of three Italian players on the line.

There was still time for a sixth Irish score as Nash crossed late on.

There was confusion in the closing seconds as Jamison Gibson-Park thought he had registered a seventh Irish try right on the cusp of full-time only for it to be ruled out.

It prompted wry smiles and celebrations as the holders extended their winning run in the tournament to 11 stretching back to 2022, with stiffer challenges undoubtedly on the horizon as they chase a historic second straight Slam.

'Keeping them to zero very pleasing' - Farrell

Ireland head coach Andy Farrell, speaking to ITV: "We're happy enough and we got what we wanted in the game with a bonus-point win.

"Keeping them to zero is very pleasing and there was some nice tries out there and some nice performances by individuals.

"We got a bit clunky in parts but they are tricky enough to play against. They (Italy) have changed the way that they play, they are a little more pragmatic so you have to find different ways of getting the ball back."

Line-ups

'Ireland remain on course but tougher tests await'

Published in Rugby
Sunday, 11 February 2024 14:33

After the pizzazz and fireworks of Marseille, one of Ireland's main priorities going into Sunday's Six Nations encounter with Italy was to avoid the possible hangover from a famous, chest-beating win over one of their fiercest rivals.

In truth, it was never in doubt. While there were a few shaky moments and errors, Ireland produced a professional and efficient performance with six tries to stay on course for another Grand Slam.

While the atmosphere was flat at times, Ireland provided enough moments to spark the Dublin crowd into life, with James Lowe's superb solo score and Jack Crowley's first try for club or country prime examples.

The Azzurri, who caused Ireland plenty of issues in Rome last year, were simply not up to the task.

Ireland know the score now. The rising pressure, the constant questions about Grand Slams, the finish line creeping into sight. They went through it all last year. They know how to navigate the various facets of a Grand Slam bid, and most importantly, they know how to get the job done.

Sunday's performance won't have been revelatory for Ireland's challengers. They remain a remarkably well-coached unit capable of recording comfortable wins even while operating far below their maximum. They also remain the team to beat.

But for Andy Farrell, a 17th successive home win was particularly pleasing given how they completely shut Italy out, the first time Ireland have kept a team scoreless in a championship game since 1987.

"36-0 is a nice scoreline for us," said Farrell.

"It's probably a better scoreline than 50-20. I thought we were clinical at times and I thought our set-piece was excellent, top drawer.

"We scored some nice tries on the back of all that type of pressure. Two [wins] from two, it's a decent start but it gets tougher."

Farrell's last three words reverberate the strongest. While Ireland have beaten France away - arguably their toughest fixture on paper - they must negotiate appointments with their Triple Crown rivals: home games against Wales and Scotland either side of a trip to Twickenham to face England.

While Farrell was able to make six changes and still lead his side past Italy with little fuss, there is a sense that he will need all of his heavy-hitters in the weeks ahead.

With that, the sight of Hugo Keenan limping off in the second half will have been deeply disturbing for Ireland fans. Keenan, one of Ireland's outstanding players in recent years, was electric at full-back again before being forced off.

With captain Peter O'Mahony, Tadhg Furlong and Bundee Aki all carrying niggles that were deemed serious enough for them to be excused from duty for the Italy game, and Garry Ringrose missing the first two matches, the injuries are quietly stacking up in the Irish squad.

Farrell can ill afford further injury headaches before Wales visit Dublin in a fortnight's time even if he does expect the aforementioned trio to return to training this week, but he was not in a position to offer any reassurances about Keenan.

"Hugo has a bang on his knee, so I don't know," Farrell said.

"He seems in good spirits but you saw him, he was limping so we'll see how he turns up tomorrow morning, whether he needs anyone to have a look at that I don't know."

While some of Farrell's frontliners were absent, others stepped up, not least Robbie Henshaw.

A starting centre for the British and Irish Lions in 2021, Henshaw has endured his share of injury troubles while stiff competition in midfield means he is not always assured of a starting spot.

But after a big performance against France last week, the 30-year-old was central to Ireland's success again - even if the smile was momentarily wiped off his face when his second-half try was ruled out.

"He's found his mojo, he's back," Farrell said of Henshaw.

"He's on fire at the minute. You could see that when we first met up in training. He's back to his old self.

"His confidence, he's bouncing around the place. We spoke during the week about his combination with Stu [McCloskey] last time they played in Biarritz against Samoa [in a World Cup warm-up] how it wasn't what it should have been.

"They both worked really hard to make the team feel righty today and Robbie was certainly at the heart of that."

Doris reflects on 'special' day as captain

It may not have been his best performance, but Sunday will be a day to cherish for Caelan Doris, who became the 110th man to captain Ireland in O'Mahony's absence.

Given that he is only 25 and made his debut for Ireland four years ago - in Farrell's first game in charge, incidentally - it is a telling reflection of Doris' rise that he was a candidate to succeed Johnny Sexton as skipper.

Farrell surprised some by handing the Leinster back row the captaincy - especially with James Ryan in the starting line-up - but Doris delivered a result in his first run-out as the group's leader.

"It was special and knowing the group we have made it even more special," said Doris, who admitted he was more nervous than usual in the build-up to the game.

"We're a tight-knit group. We've been together for the guts of four years now, the relationships we have are special.

"The environment the coaches have set, about being ourselves and being vulnerable makes my job easier and made it easier this week. I leaned heavily on the other lads as well.

"I hope everyone that has been involved from Ballina to Blackrock can take a bit of pride from this and seeing me captain the country."

NHL, Maple Leafs' Rielly set for in-person hearing

Published in Hockey
Sunday, 11 February 2024 14:53

Toronto Maple Leafs All-Star defenseman Morgan Rielly on Sunday accepted an offer for an in-person hearing with NHL Player Safety following his cross-check on Ottawa Senators forward Ridly Greig on Saturday night.

The league's safety department posted on social media that the hearing will be held Tuesday at the NHL's offices in New York. The Maple Leafs will host the St. Louis Blues later that night.

The incident in question occurred Saturday with 5.1 seconds remaining in Ottawa's 5-3 win. After Greig took advantage of an empty net and whistled a slap shot from just beyond the crease to ice the game, Rielly took offense, sending Greig into the boards with a high hit. Rielly was assessed a major penalty for cross-checking and a game misconduct.

Typically, with empty-net goals -- a sign that the game's outcome has been decided -- the scoring team simply pushes or slides the puck into the net, perhaps even trying a wrist shot, so as not to show up the losing opponent. Very rarely do they wind up with a slap shot, especially so close to the crease.

"We obviously didn't like the result on the empty-netter," Toronto captain John Tavares said after the loss. "So, we're going to stick together and stand our ground when necessary."

Toronto coach Sheldon Keefe concurred with his captain.

"I thought it was appropriate," Keefe said after the loss when asked his thoughts on Rielly's decision. "I'm sure [the league] will look at it, yeah."

That indeed happened Sunday, and the nature of the decision indicates a lengthier suspension than most. A player is offered an in-person hearing if he faces a suspension of at least six games.

After the incident, Keefe sent out enforcer Ryan Reaves for the final faceoff, and a potential ensuing retaliation, but the officials quickly jumped in to prevent a brawl.

"He was reacting to a play," Keefe said of Rielly. "Their player has the right to do what he wants in that moment. And our players have the right to react. And it's the emotions of the game."

Ottawa coach Jacques Martin saw Saturday's situation differently.

"He put the puck in the net," he said of Greig. "Whether he shoots it or pushes it, [Rielly's reaction], that shouldn't happen.

"That's not a hockey play. That's just frustration or something. It's not part of the game."

Rielly, the fifth overall pick of the 2012 NHL draft by Toronto, took part in All-Star Weekend festivities earlier this month. He is in his 11th season with the Maple Leafs and has never been suspended.

Rielly has seven goals and 43 points this season, good for fourth in scoring on the club.

Saka on rout: 'We smelled blood, went for kill'

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 11 February 2024 14:48

Bukayo Saka said Arsenal "smelled blood and went for the kill" in their ruthless 6-0 thrashing of West Ham at London Stadium on Sunday.

Arsenal moved back within two points of leaders Liverpool as headers from centre-back duo William Saliba and Gabriel, Saka's 41st-minute penalty and a fine Leandro Trossard strike put them 4-0 up at the interval.

- Olley: Arsenal hit top form with evisceration of West Ham

Thousands of West Ham fans streamed out at half-time and opted not to return. In their absence, Saka scored again on 63 minutes before Declan Rice fired in a superb 25-yard effort and refused to celebrate against his former club after moving across London in a 105 million ($133m) move last summer.

"We were 4-0 up in the first half and we could have scored many more, including myself," Saka told Sky Sports.

"I think we smelled blood today and went for the kill. We did really well to score more and we were really happy."

In recording their biggest-ever away win in Premier League history, Arsenal backed up last weekend's win over Liverpool to move within two points of Jurgen Klopp's side and level with Manchester City, who have a game-in-hand.

Asked whether Saka's comments were indicative a team ready to hunt down their title rivals, Arteta told a postmatch news conference: "What I smell is a team who wants to be better and better. The way they trained this week, they were totally focused the day after Liverpool to say 'OK it is a big task and now it is time to go another level and beat West Ham' and they certainly did that today.

"We are maintaining and building some momentum now and the performances, they have been really strong as well as the results and we need to maintain that because we are not the only ones.

"We know the standards and the level we are facing and we need to be at this level if we have any chance to be successful."

Late McTominay winner lifts Man United past Villa

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 11 February 2024 14:48

Super sub Scott McTominay scored a late winner as Manchester United continued to inch up the Premier League table with a 2-1 win at Aston Villa on Sunday.

Erik ten Hag's United are sixth on 41 points after their third consecutive victory, five points behind fifth-placed Villa who would have climbed to fourth with a win. United are six points away from fourth spot and a guaranteed Champions League berth next season.

"Every game you win is massive for taking a step forward and confidence for the boys," McTominay, whose seven goals make him the highest-scoring substitute in the league this season, told Sky Sports.

"It is all positive but it is about repeating it and not getting too far ahead of ourselves when we win a few. We've got to repeat it now."

McTominay deserved credit for his terrific attitude as a substitute, Ten Hag said.

"He is an example for many players these days. There are not many players any more who are ready for every minute they can be on the pitch," the manager told the BBC. "Today we have seen another example. He is always ready to come on and make a difference."

Rasmus Højlund scored his fifth goal in five consecutive league games -- and 11th in all competitions -- to put United ahead in the 17th minute, knocking in Harry Maguire's header from close range through keeper Emi Martinez's legs.

United keeper André Onana produced several huge saves to keep Villa off the scoresheet until Douglas Luiz levelled in the 67th minute.

Onana made yet another superb save to stop Clément Lenglet but Luiz was there to fire home the rebound, celebrating with a shoulder shimmy in front of Onana's net.

But United had the last laugh, with Scotland's McTominay coming on in the 73rd minute and scoring the winner in the 86th, leaping to head a superb cross from Diogo Dalot past Martinez.

A delighted Ten Hag punched the air in celebration.

"I feel like as long as I'm fit and healthy I can come on to the pitch and perform. I don't take it personally, I just want to come in and try and do the best I can for this. Long may it continue," McTominay said.

"It was an unbelievable cross to be fair, whipped with a lot of pace. I just needed it to hit my head and get it on target. Full credit to the boys, we created a lot of good chances which may go unnoticed."

Villa had 10 shots on target to United's five and had 55.9% of possession.

"Great spirit and fight to come back and Scott is the match-winner again," Maguire told Sky. "It's an amazing feeling but we'd like to make it a little more easy for ourselves.

"Scott has come on in numerous games this year and made the difference for us. We had to dig deep in the second half; I think we did in the end and deserved the win."

Villa manager Unai Emery said the result was a tough one to swallow.

"But that is football," he said. "We played like we planned and we deserved more."

Yamal, 16, helps Barça salvage Granada draw

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 11 February 2024 14:48

A double by Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal helped his side salvage a 3-3 draw at home to relegation-threatened Granada on Sunday in a rollercoaster LaLiga match.

Xavi Hernandez's side are third in the standings on 51 points, five behind second-placed Girona, who were thrashed on Saturday by Real Madrid, leaders with 61 points.

- Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)

"We lost two points and a good opportunity to cut the deficit. Granada played an intelligent game, they pushed us hard," Xavi told a news conference after the game.

"The league was difficult and now it's two points more difficult. It's a big difference but we're not going to give up.

"We had plenty of chances to seal the game. The team had faith, courage and desire, but it wasn't enough. It makes it even more difficult for us."

Lamine Yamal has scored three goals and contributed four assists in LaLiga this season.

Yamal put the hosts ahead after 14 minutes with a tap-in into an empty net after João Cancelo's cross found him at the far post. Granada equalised two minutes before halftime thanks to Ricard Sánchez's powerful volley into the top corner.

The visitors grabbed the lead in the 60th minute with an easy finish by Manchester United loanee Facundo Pellistri, before Robert Lewandowski made it 2-2 as he scored from Ilkay Gündogan's pass three minutes later.

Ignasi Miquel restored Granada's lead with a towering header in the 66th minute, but Yamal levelled again with a long-range strike for his second of the night ten minutes from time.

"It's another missed opportunity but we have to keep working. Right now I'm thinking more about the draw and the fact that we're losing two points than about my performance," 16-year-old Yamal told Movistar.

"We've been conceding these goals so quickly throughout the season. That's what we urgently need to improve. There's still league left, we'll keep trying."
