There are six games on the Sunday schedule in the NHL, and four of those six matchups are within the East Division.

A quick glance at the standings shows that a "Big Four" has emerged; while the New York Rangers are finishing the season out strong, the team they're chasing for the final playoff slot -- the Boston Bruins -- has a four-point lead with two games in hand. One of those remaining games for Boston is hosting the division-leading Washington Capitals at high noon ET on Sunday.

The season series is tied 3-3, although the most recent contest was a bit lopsided. The Caps won 8-1 in Zdeno Chara's first game back in front of Boston fans after he signed with Washington this offseason. Bruins trade addition Taylor Hall comes in to the game on a hot streak, with a goal in two straight games.

As we enter the final stretch of the regular season, it's time to check in on all the playoff races -- along with the teams jockeying for position in the 2021 NHL draft lottery.

Race for the No. 1 pick

The NHL uses a draft lottery to determine the order at the top of the first round, so the team that finishes in last place is not guaranteed the No. 1 selection. New for 2021, a team may move up a maximum of 10 spots if it wins the lottery, so only 11 teams are eligible for the draw for the No. 1 pick. Full details on the process can be found here.

Bayern, Flick clash over departure claims

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 18 April 2021 06:51

Bayern Munich have announced that they "disapprove" with coach Hansi Flick's plans to leave the club at the end of the season.

The Bayern coach said he had informed the club and the playing staff of his desire to depart from the Bundesliga champions after their 3-2 victory over Wolfsburg on Saturday.

- Stream ESPN FC Daily on ESPN+ (U.S. only)
- Stream Bundesliga matches live on ESPN+ in the U.S.

He told Sky Germany: "I told the team today that I informed the club during the week after the game in Paris that I would like to terminate my contract at the end of the season.

"The future is absolutely not clear. There has been no discussions regarding that. Obviously the [German] FA is an option which every coach has to think about. But this is independent of that. I decided to take this step."

However, the club's board released a statement on Sunday expressing disappointment of Flick's decision to go public with his plea to leave.

"Yesterday [Saturday], FC Bayern head coach Hansi Flick made public his wish to terminate his contract, which runs until June 2023, at the end of the current season," the statement said.

"Hansi Flick had informed the FC Bayern Munchen AG executive board of this wish during the past week.

"Hansi Flick and FC Bayern had agreed to place the focus on the matches against VfL Wolfsburg, Bayer 04 Leverkusen [April 20] and 1. FSV Mainz 05 [April 24], in order not to disrupt the concentration of the whole club on these three important matches.

"FC Bayern disapproves of the unilateral communications issued by Hansi Flick and will continue talks after the match at Mainz, as agreed."

Flick has been linked with the managerial role at Germany, where he could take over from Joachim Low after the 2020 European Championship this summer.

Bayern were eliminated from the Champions League at Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday but remain on course to claim a record-extending ninth consecutive league title.

Flick has steered Bayern to six titles in the past 10 months, including the Champions League title last season.

Tonight we have Virat Kohli's Royal Challengers Bangalore facing off against Eoin Morgan's Kolkata Knight Riders. We'll have the likes of AB de Villiers, Glenn Maxwell and Yuzvendra Chahal against the likes of Andre Russell, Shakib Al Hasan and Pat Cummins. If the blog doesn't load for you, click here. Body language, and putting on an act were among the "four points" AB de Villiers discussed with Virat Kohli when the Indian captain made a "special call" after the second T20I against England in Ahmedabad, where he helped India chase down a target with an unbeaten 73. Kohli made the call because of a "lack of clarity" in his mind, having struggled for fluency during the preceding four-Test series, when he scored just two half-centuries.

"I mentioned four points," de Villiers revealed during an interview with the Royal Challengers Bangalore website. "We spoke a couple of things away from the game and then also a couple of technical things, but it was very basic. I have been wanting to tell him for quite a while because I was watching him for a few months and it looked like he was quite intense at the crease, with his whole game. So I really wasn't surprised when I saw the message [from Kohli] and I knew immediately all he needs to do is the basic stuff."

And what were those basics? "See the ball. Still head. Allow the ball to come into your space. Body language and attitude," de Villiers said. "And I sort of elaborated around those four points. But basics, yeah. Those are the kind of little things you forget. It seems so simple. But when you are struggling to find your rhythm, your momentum, you really forget things like keep my head still, allow the ball to come into my space.

"Also, you got to act a bit. You got to walk out there, chest out, ready to punch the guys, and before you know, you are really in the mix of things, enjoying your innings."

Kohli has not scored a Test century since November 2019. Although he has reiterated his priority of trying to help his team win, Kohli himself pointed out in a separate chat with the franchise that "doubts" were creeping into his mind and that is when he felt he needed to have a chat with de Villiers.

'When in doubt, what do you do?

"It's amazing, When you've played for so long, you can go into a zone where you feel you can't even score a run," Kohli said. "And there is such a lack of clarity in your mind, just too many thoughts going on. There's literally nothing inside of you that's creating any fear, it's all external factors you're thinking of - what if this happens, what if that happens? And that's just creating more and more confusion.

"So, I thought I will just take another perspective or another point of view because I've seen AB play, and every innings he's got that same intensity, same passion and same commitment. And he's never addicted to getting scores, he's always thinking about the team situation. So I asked him a question: "when in doubt, what do you do?" And he gave the simplest of advice one can get: 'just watch the ball and everything else will be fine'. So I went to the game and started watching the ball."

"See the ball. Still head. Allow the ball to come into your space. Body language and attitude. And I, sort of, elaborated around those four points"
de Villiers to Kohli

Having started the white ball segment of the England series - comprising five T20Is and three ODIs - with a duck, Kohli finished with five half-centuries as he led India to victories in both the series.

Kohli spoke about how the demands of his multiple roles were beginning to distract him, which was then affecting his mindset on the field. "When you have so many expectations from yourself, having done that for 12-13 years at the same level and when things are not happening as well, you start searching for answers, you start becoming more desperate," he said. "And then you lose out on the enjoyment of the game. You end up performing well because you never focused on the performances. You focused on the joy and the process.

"It is very easy to get away from that because constantly, the feedback around you is: you have to make sure you play, you have to make sure you stay in for 15 overs, you have to make sure to provide the balance. And sometimes, as an individual, you feel like, I am a human at the end of the day. I also want some space where I am told 'just go and enjoy your batting, don't worry about anything else'. So things become very hectic at certain stages (of a player's career)."

The chat with de Villiers helped Kohli realise the joy of playing the game at the highest level, all over again.

"And you don't expect anyone else to understand, to be very honest. You have to make that decision: to hell with everything, I'm going to go out there, I am going to hit that cricket, to hell with the repercussions," Kohli said. "Whatever happens, happens. I am just going to go out there and enjoy the game first because before I played for India, before I became the captain, I started playing this game for a reason. And if I go away from that reason, things are going to get more and more tough."

Essex 96 (Rushworth 3-13, Carse 3-37) and 330 (Walter 77, Allison 52, Carse 5-82) beat Durham 259 (Borthwick 100, Poynter 52*, Harmer 5-79) and 123 (Burnham 43, Harmer 5-57, Cook 3-17) by 44 runs

Simon Harmer made sure it was 'Harmer Time' again at the Cloudfm County Ground, Chelmsford, as the talismanic spinner was the architect for Essex's sensational comeback victory over Durham.

Harmer claimed his 22nd five-wicket haul, and sixth 10 wickets in a match since joining the county in 2017 with a bamboozling 5 for 57.

Defending LV= Insurance County Championship and Bob Willis Trophy champions Essex had been bowled out for 96 in the first innings and gave up a 163-run first-innings deficit, only to win by 44 runs.

The victory, which gave the hosts 19 points to Durham's five, was their 12th in 13 at home.

The equation for the last day was simple; Durham required 108 runs and Essex needed seven wickets.

Jack Burnham ticked four off the target with the second ball of the day, a well-timed flick off his legs, having scored an enterprising 31 the previous evening.

Burnham and Scott Borthwick's partnership passed 50, with the latter only contributing 13 to it, but only reached 63 before Harmer struck for the first time. With 85 required, Burnham departed for 43 when he rocked onto the back foot and hoicked straight to Tom Westley at long-on.

Adam Wheater thought he had stumped Borthwick in Harmer's next over, to earn a reprimand from the umpires, only for the off-spinner to pin the first-innings century-maker when going back, 80 still needed.

Only another run had been added six balls later when Sam Cook, who returned figures of 3 for 17, had Stuart Poynter lbw.

Ben Raine lasted just five balls before Harmer flicked his pad to take his third wicket in 11 balls.

With 60 needed to win, Ned Eckersley, who had survived a drop at short-leg before he had scored, tickled Harmer around the corner to Dan Lawrence at leg slip.

Harmer completed his second five-for in the match when Brydon Carse, who had a runner due to a swollen ankle sustained while bowling, was lbw. Harmer's match figures were an impressive 10 for 136.

Jamie Porter completed the victory when he sent Matt Salisbury's middle stump tumbling.

Gloucestershire 309 (Bracey 118, Taylor 56, Dent 50) and 156 for 2 (Bracey 83*) beat Somerset 312 (Davies 87, Overton 54) and 149 (Hildreth 64, Higgins 4-29) by eight wickets

James Bracey displayed the temperament, as well as the talent, of a future England player as Gloucestershire wrapped up an eight-wicket LV=County Championship win over Somerset at Taunton.

The 23-year-old left-hander added an ice-cool 83 not out to his first-innings century and shared a match-clinching second-wicket stand of 79 with Kraigg Brathwaite to help his side to a comprehensive victory.

Brathwaite marked his Gloucestershire debut with a solid 36 and together the pair stifled the much-vaunted home seam attack.

The visitors reached their target of 153 off 41.1 overs just before lunch, with Tom Lace uneaten on 20, and took 22 points, to Somerset's six.

Gloucestershire began the day on 28 for 1, needing 125 for victory, with nine wickets in hand, and would have been heartened by the clear blue skies over the Cooper Associates County Ground.

Bracey had shown his mettle the previous evening when taming a fired-up Craig Overton and was soon in control again as Somerset sought the early wickets that might create a contest.

The home side were hoping a couple of breakthroughs in the opening overs would create nerves in the Gloucestershire dressing room. But the pitch only served to show what a poor effort Somerset's second-innings score of 149 had been.

While Overton and Lewis Gregory beat the bat on occasions, Bracey and Brathwaite were soon confident enough to play their shots.

The West Indies captain struck four boundaries in his 62-ball innings before aiming for a fifth off a wide ball from Marchant de Lange and getting an inside edge onto his middle stump.

By then, Gloucestershire only required 64 runs. But de Lange, boosted by the wicket, summoned pace and bounce to test new batsman Lace.

Bracey kept the momentum of the innings going with a swept four off Jack Leach, who found little assistance in the surface for his left-arm spin, and went to his fifty off 84 balls, with eight boundaries.

There was even a reverse-swept four off Leach as Bracey and Gloucestershire closed in rapidly on their target. A more orthodox and delicate sweep off the England spinner brought another boundary and Bracey was by now in total command.

Somerset turned to the wholehearted Overton for one last throw of the dice. He beat Bracey's outside edge, but to no avail.

It was Gloucestershire's first Championship win at Taunton for 28 years and the winning runs, a Bracey boundary off Leach, sparked jubilant celebrations. It was the 13th four of his 122-ball innings.

For Somerset, it was a first defeat in red ball cricket at their home ground since 2017.

Eliud Kipchoge cruises to NN Mission Marathon win

Published in Athletics
Sunday, 18 April 2021 02:52
World record-holder shows he is back in form as he clocks 2:04:30 while Katharina Steinruck follows in footsteps of her famous mother with women’s victory

When Eliud Kipchoge finished eighth in the London Marathon last October, we wondered if the great Kenyan was on the decline. He blamed an ear blockage and assured us it was a blip. Then he went away to plot his comeback.

On Sunday (April 18) he showed he was pretty much back to his best as he cruised to victory in the NN Mission Marathon in a world leading time of 2:04:30.

After the race was moved from Hamburg in Germany to Twente Airport near Enschede in the Netherlands, the 36-year-old took to the runway and, after passing halfway in 61:43, he put in a smooth and seemingly effortless performance as he pulled away from fellow Kenyan and training partner Jonathan Korir with 9km to go.

There have been 196 days since that defeat in London and Kipchoge has clearly licked his wounds, regrouped and regained his formidable fitness and confidence.

He promised that Sunday’s event would be a “beautiful” marathon and it certainly was from his point of view. On August 8 he will defend his Olympic title in Sapporo and will surely now go into the race as strong favourite.

In a race that was specially organised to help athletes qualify for the Games, there were a flurry of fast times. The top eight men ran sub-2:10 and 15 broke the Olympic qualifying mark of 2:11:30.

Conditions were chilly with Kipchoge and others starting the race wearing gloves, but fortunately the wind was not strong on what was a potentially exposed course.

Runner-up Korir of Kenya clocked 2:06:40 followed by Goitom Kifle of Eritrea with 2:08:07 in third, Philemon Kacheran of Kenya ran 2:08:47 in fourth despite also being one of the pacemakers, while the 2012 Olympic champion Stephen Kiprotich of Uganda was fifth with 2:09:04 and local Dutch runner Michel Butter also ran a Tokyo qualifier with 2:10:30.

“It is mission accomplished,” said Kipchoge. “The conditions were really good. It was a bit windy but I have no complaint, we were running as one.

“The race was really perfect. The NN Mission Marathon was a real test before Tokyo. It was so good a marathon happened a few months before Tokyo to test our fitness.

“To organise this in the middle of a pandemic and show that people can still run and deliver their best race before the Olympics is very important.”

Steinruck makes a name for herself

Katharina Steinruck of Germany – the daughter of three-time London Marathon winner Katrin Dörre-Heinig – won the women’s race with 2:25:59 as the top 10 finishers beat the Olympic standard of 2:29:30.

Unusually, she raced the distance wearing running tights and long-sleeved top but after passing halfway in 72:58 she drew clear of her rivals and took almost a minute and a half off her PB.

After her mother won Olympic bronze in Seoul in 1988 (not to mention finishing fifth in Barcelona 1992 and fourth in Atlanta 1996), Steinruck will now go to the Tokyo Olympics hoping to make an impact.

Runner-up Sara Moreira of Portugal clocked 2:26:42 with Rabea Schoneborn of Germany running a PB of 2:27:03 in third and Laura Hottenrott, also of Germany, running a five-minute PB of 2:28:02.

One of the most remarkable stories of the day, though, was Mieke Gorissen’s performance in seventh place in 2:28:31. The Belgian only took up running seriously in 2018 but now, aged 38, has smashed the 2:30 barrier and achieved an Olympic qualifying time in her debut at 26.2 miles.

Royal Challengers Bangalore, who are occupying the second position after two round of games, will have their sights set on a third win in a row when they face the Kolkata Knight Riders in in Chennai on Sunday. The addition of Glenn Maxwell has only bolstered the batting line-up that boasts the likes of AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli. In the bowling department, though Yuzvendra Chahal has been wicketless so far, other players including Harshal Patel and Shahbaz Ahmed have stepped up to the challenge. For the Royal Challengers, Australian allrounder Daniel Sams is also available for selection after testing negative for Covid-19.

The Knight Riders, who are coming off a demoralising defeat to the Mumbai Indians, will be keen to get back into the winning way. It will be interesting to see how their key allrounder Andre Russel, who toiled against the left-arm spin of Krunal Pandya, faces Ahmed. That apart, Eoin Morgan's side has shown promise batting at the top and also bowling at the death. It is the middle order that needs to fire.

Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Kolkata Knight Riders is available to view in India on Disney+ Hotstar, Jio TV and Airtel TV.
