Sources: Man Utd set to sign Cavani, Telles

Manchester United are set to sign Edinson Cavani and Alex Telles, sources have told ESPN.

Cavani arrived in Manchester on Sunday ahead of final talks and medical tests at Carrington. The 33-year-old is set to sign an initial one-year contract with the option of another 12 months.

Telles should follow the Uruguayan in at Old Trafford ahead of Monday's transfer deadline after sources told ESPN United are in advanced negotiations over a deal for the Brazilian left-back.

Porto have accepted a bid of around €15 million plus add-ons after initially demanding closer to €20m up front. The 27-year-old is scheduled to undergo a medical before joining up with the Brazil national team.

United turned down the chance to sign Cavani in January after being put off by his wage demands of £360,000-a-week. After leaving Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, the striker has been offered to every major club in Europe before United stepped up their interest last week.

Sources have told ESPN his wages will be significantly lower than his demands in January and the agent fees involved in the deal will be lower than €10m.

Cavani has already spoken to former PSG teammate Thiago Silva, who joined Chelsea in the summer, about the Premier League and life in England.

United were keen to tie up a deal for a centre forward knowing that Odion Ighalo loan from Shanghai Shenhua is set to end in January.

Meanwhile, United full-back Diogo Dalot has joined AC Milan on loan for the rest of the season.

Mumbai Indians 208 for 5 (de Kock 67, Krunal 20, Rashid 1-22) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad 174 for 7 (Warner 60, Boult 2-28, Pattinson 2-29) by 34 runs

There is life in the graveyard. Mumbai Indians conquered Sharjah and Sunrisers Hyderabad with a typically freakish bowling performance.

Trent Boult's quality with the new ball continues to translate into early wickets - and this time he was good in the death too. James Pattinson is more than making up for the loss of Lasith Malinga. And Krunal Pandya - having thumped 20 runs off the final four balls of the innings to get the total up to 208 - afforded only 35 in return, even on such a tiny ground, to keep the pressure on the opposition.

Mumbai gave away no easy runs. They were ruthless about letting a partnership develop. They were worthy winners.

The match-up

Usually, when Sunrisers need early wickets, they just toss the ball to Bhuvneshwar Kumar. But with him injured, they had to find another way to contain a very strong Mumbai line-up.

So in came Sandeep Sharma, a man with the skill to move the ball, which has perhaps contributed to his excellent head-to-head against Rohit Sharma. Before today, it read 29 runs in 33 balls and two dismissals. Now it's 35 runs, 38 balls and three dismissals, as Rohit went chasing after a wide ball and nicked off. That wicket went a long way to keeping Mumbai to 48 for 2, the lowest Powerplay score this IPL in Sharjah.

The QdKO

There were signs that the pitch, unbelievably, offered the bowlers some grip. Not good news for batsmen who love hitting through the line. And for a while, Quinton de Kock tried to find creative solutions to this problem, attempting scoops and reverse sweeps and, well, failing to find runs. He was 25 off 20 in the eighth over. And then, like light at the end of the tunnel, came a half-volley and he launched it down the ground for six. This is where de Kock lives. A place where he can muscle cricket balls all day long. Once he got back in touch with his power game, making his 11th IPL fifty was just a matter of time.

A mouth-watering finish

Sunrisers tried to save Rashid Khan's overs against Mumbai's biggest hitters because they haven't been able to hit him. Kieron Pollard's IPL strike-rate against the ace legspiner is 76 and Hardik Pandya's is only 57. But they realised the more immediate threat was de Kock and so Rashid was brought back in the 14th over and one of his googlies did the trick. Mumbai were 134 for 3. Rashid's final over went for only two runs as Pollard and Pandya both chose to play him out. Then it happened.

Pandya began hitting short balls for sixes with a vertical bat. Pollard cleared the long-off boundary with a chip. Manish Pandey took a diving catch that will adorn IPL highlight reels for a long time. T Natarajan bowled like a dream in the most trying conditions, his yorkers negating Mumbai's two biggest hitters. It was bare-knuckle cricket, neither team willing to give any quarter. But then came the final over - Siddharth Kaul hit the blockhole and made a mess of Hardik's stumps, so in walked his brother Krunal and promptly dispatched the bowler for 6, 4, 4, 6.

The superstar

It's no exaggeration to say Sunrisers' batting relies mainly on one man. A huge part of that is because of how naturally he is able to adapt to that pressure. David Warner is not in prime form. A consequence of lockdown, perhaps. But he still runs like a demon between the wickets. He still doesn't throw his wicket away. He still wants to fight. And that was on display here as he fought his way to a half-century. At the start, when he wasn't in nick, he did his best not to eat up deliveries. Later, as he became more like his usual self, he was able to do amazing things, like cut Jasprit Bumrah's first two balls to the point boundary. He got to 50 off 34 balls but the other end couldn't be as careful as him, as determined as him and so the Sunrisers chase faltered.

Quality counts

Jonny Bairstow loves pace on the ball, so Boult took it off, watched him lose his shape and then his wicket. Williamson is the same way. Cue another Boult slower ball and bragging rights for life. Pandey was caught in the deep going for a six against the newly-brought back Pattinson when it was very clear Mumbai were looking for a wicket. Krunal was so ferociously switched on that after nailing a wide yorker against Warner and keeping it to just a dot, he punched the air as if that itself was victory. Boult, again, though he has a reputation of leaking runs in the death, was so precise with his yorkers that he gave away only four runs in the 18th over. Two balls later, there was a wicket. There was always a wicket.

Liam Plunkett, Ben Foakes ease Surrey into Blast final

Published in Cricket
Sunday, 04 October 2020 09:04

Surrey 74 for 4 (Payne 3-18) beat Gloucestershire 73 for 7 (Plunkett 3-11) by six wickets

Surrey strutted into their final T20 Blast final since 2013 by beating Gloucestershire with eight balls to spare to seal their ninth win on the bounce in an 11-over game at Edgbaston after the rain eventually relented in Birmingham.

Gloucestershire's fraught start, in which their openers struggled to get bat on ball, set the tone for a frantic innings in which they compiled only 73. Liam Plunkett, who took 3 for 11, was the standout performer, but Reece Topley and Will Jacks' frugal start was just as important.

In the chase, Gloucestershire threatened put the squeeze on in the middle overs to keep the nerves jangling in the Surrey dugout, but after Jacks and Jason Roy had pounded three boundaries in the first over it always looked like being their day, and Ben Foakes' run-a-ball 20 secured their spot in the final.

Amla axed

With four top-order batsmen in their quarter-final side, Surrey had no interest in reputations when picking their side: they left out a man with 349 internationals caps, Hashim Amla, for a man with none, Jordan Clark, who had impressed in an intra-squad game after missing the group stage with injury. In the event it mattered little, but it will be intriguing to see if they stick with the same formula in the final.

Both sides had played abbreviated games earlier in the competition: Gloucestershire won a 12-over thrash against Birmingham Bears on this ground, while Surrey had cruised past Hampshire in an 11-over contest. It was no surprise that Gareth Batty chose to bowl with no idea how the pitch would play after three days under cover, but Surrey's start exceeded even his wildest dreams.

Gloucs fluff their lines

Whether or not Gloucestershire had a score in mind for their 3.2 overs of Powerplay, it is hard to picture their plan involved a total of 12 for 1 after that stage. Chris Dent and Miles Hammond seemed panicked by the occasion as they failed repeatedly to lay bat on ball; when Hammond skied his 11th ball up to Foakes with a single run to his name, there must have been some temptation to drop it and extend his misery.

Ian Cockbain then flicked the first ball after the fielding restrictions were lifted to midwicket, and Dent skied a catch up in the same direction and over later. Jack Taylor holed out to the boundary-rider to give Plunkett a wicket with his first ball, and while Ryan Higgins and Benny Howell briefly threatened a late flourish, the same man removed both in as many balls to extinguish any lingering hope of reaching a par score.

No Payne, no gain

With Gloucestershire desperate for early wickets if they were to set the game up for their middle-over stalwarts Howell and Tom Smith, it seemed obvious who should take the new ball: in David Payne, they had the Blast's leading Powerplay wicket-taker since 2017 in their side.

But by the time Payne came on for the second over, the task was almost insurmountable: Graeme van Buuren's left-arm spin had been carved for three boundaries by Roy and Jacks. Payne removed Roy with his fourth ball thanks to a superb catch from Howell running back, but with the required rate already down at a run a ball, it seemed like the game was already up.

Surrey threatened a wobble when they went 16 balls without a boundary in the middle overs, struggling to time the ball against Howell and Smith, but when Foakes drilled a straight six it eased the chokehold and took the equation back down to six an over.

Payne's cutter removed Foakes to give him a third wicket, but Jamie Overton - unused with the ball - pushed a full toss down the ground to seal the win.

Rivera surprised with 'Coach's Corner' cutouts

Published in Breaking News

LANDOVER, Md. -- Washington coach Ron Rivera called receiving a cancer diagnosis "overwhelming." But it's scenes like Sunday before his team played the Baltimore Ravens that helped provide the necessary support to continue.

The Washington Football Team surprised Rivera with a section of approximately 400 cardboard cutouts, purchased by friends and family. They labeled the section "Coach's Corner" with another sign that read #RIVERASTRONG.

Among the cutouts: Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid, New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman and two of Rivera's former players in Carolina -- linebacker Luke Kuechly and receiver Steve Smith.

Rivera visited the area nearly 2½ hours before the game. He's scheduled to talk on ABC's "Good Morning America" on Monday about undergoing treatment for squamous cell cancer while trying to coach.

"Someone once told me you don't know about cancer until it touches you," Rivera said during a pregame interview with ESPN's Sal Paolantonio. "That's when it touched my brother, Mickey. There's nothing like it. When it touches you, it's overwhelming. But then you see things like this and people that support you and the notes I got and the letters I got, the notes I got from friends. Tremendous.

"It shows that you're not doing this by yourself, that there's a whole bunch of people helping you do this."

Rivera's brother, Mickey, died in 2015 after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

Rivera said his own diagnosis was early enough and that doctors are optimistic about his prognosis. He was diagnosed with cancer in August. He missed practice Wednesday and had to leave early Thursday. He missed another practice earlier this season. Defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio filled in for Rivera when needing to address the team or the media.

For Rivera, he said his situation also heightened his awareness of medical costs.

"It speaks to the value and the need of proper medical [insurance] for our country," he said. "Going through the things I'm going through and seeing what these things cost, you just hope everybody's protected and covered. I really do."

Patriots-Chiefs going to Monday pending tests

Published in Breaking News
Sunday, 04 October 2020 10:29

Although quarterback Cam Newton has tested positive for the coronavirus, the New England Patriots will play the Chiefs on Monday night in Kansas City.

The game, which was originally scheduled for Sunday afternoon, will kick off at 7:05 p.m. ET and air on CBS. The Falcons-Packers Monday Night Football game will begin at 8:50 p.m. on ESPN.

The Pats-Chiefs plan is contingent on negative COVID-19 tests. Teams don't usually test on game days, but sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter that both teams will be tested Monday morning. Patriots players were tested Sunday morning and all the tests came back negative, according to sources.

Saturday started with New England confirming that "a Patriots player tested positive for COVID-19," and that "the player immediately entered self-quarantine." That player, league sources told Schefter and Field Yates, was Newton.

But the day ended with all other Patriots tests returning negative Saturday night, a source told Schefter. The NFL still needs to get the Chiefs' test results, the source said, but this was what the league needed and wanted to see after a chaotic day in New England.

Earlier in the day, the NFL said in a statement that there were "positive COVID-19 tests on both teams." The league went on to announce the Patriots-Chiefs game, originally scheduled for Sunday afternoon, would be rescheduled to Monday or Tuesday.

The plan now is for the Patriots to fly Monday during the day and play that night, sources said.

Chiefs practice squad quarterback Jordan Ta'amu tested positive, a source told ESPN, confirming an NFL Network report. Ta'amu serves as Kansas City's scout team quarterback and played the role of Newton in preparation for this week's game.

With Newton out, the Patriots will need to find a new starting quarterback. Veteran Brian Hoyer has served as the Patriots' No. 2 quarterback through the first three weeks of the season, and 2019 fourth-round draft choice Jarrett Stidham has been third on the depth chart.

This marks the first time this season that the Patriots have been affected by the coronavirus. Up to this point, they hadn't placed a player on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Coach Bill Belichick had previously said the Patriots, who also have quarterback Jake Dolegala on the practice squad, are fortunate to have good depth at the position.

Newton has been one of the Patriots' top performers during the team's 2-1 start. He is 62-of-91 for 714 yards passing, with two touchdown passes and two interceptions, and has added 35 rushes for 149 yards and four touchdowns.

Earlier this week, with news of the Tennessee Titans' coronavirus outbreak, Belichick had said: "We monitor everything every day. We don't just do it when there's a problem or something comes up somewhere else. We do it on a daily basis and make everyone aware -- because this is everybody. It's not just players; it's players and coaches and staff and everybody else. If we can do something better, then we talk to them about how we can do it better. So we try to monitor it the best we can, and we, I think, are pretty vigilant with all of us."

To help you set your fantasy football lineups and to avoid starting a player who won't be in the lineup, we'll post fantasy-relevant updates and analysis here as NFL teams release their inactives, typically about 90 minutes before kickoff. Twelve-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal raced into the quarter-finals with a straight-set victory over American qualifier Sebastian Korda.

Korda said in the build-up that Nadal was his "idol" but the 20-year-old struggled to match the clay-court specialist on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Spanish second seed Nadal, chasing a fourth successive title at Roland Garros, took the match 6-1 6-1 6-2.

He will face the winner of Alexander Zverev versus Jannik Sinner next.

"Sebastian will have a really bright future, such a great player and only 20 years old," said 34-year-old Nadal, of a player who calls him an inspiration.

"It is a real honour. All of our generation try hard to be passionate, play every single day at our best, and if that is an inspiration for the younger generation, that is good."

Korda, whose dad Petr was the 1998 Australian Open champion and reached the final in Paris in 1992, was the youngest American man to reach this stage at Roland Garros since 19-year-old Michael Chang in 1991.

He grew up watching video tapes of the Spaniard and even named his cat after the 19-time Grand Slam champion.

It promised to be the perfect start for the French Open debutant, who twice had break points in a nine-minute opening game.

But the world number 213 failed to convert as a ruthless Nadal held and then won the following four games on his way to clinching the opening set in 40 minutes.

He eased to the second set in blustery conditions in Paris, before Korda broke early in the third with a combination of fierce backhands.

But Nadal, who is yet to drop a set this tournament, hit back by taking the next five games in a row to win in one hour and 55 minutes.

Doubek Completes A Perfect Zolder Weekend

Published in Racing
Sunday, 04 October 2020 06:34

HEUSDEN-ZOLDER, Belgium – It was a perfect weekend for Martin Doubek at the wheel of his No. 7 Hendriks Motorsport Ford Mustang.

The Czech won his second consecutive EuroNASCAR 2 race at Circuit Zolder Sunday and made a big leap in the points standings after sitting out of the season opener in Vallelunga.

For Doubek, who has been racing in EuroNASCAR since 2015, the weekend in Belgium marks his breakthrough in Europe’s official NASCAR series. But it was not an easy win for the 25 year old, who started on wet tyres on a quickly drying track.

Midway through a race highlighted by three cautions, he was put under pressure by a charging Dylan Derdeale on slick tires, but the Belgian who was involved in a restart contact in turn two with Nicholas Risitano that shuffled him down the order with four laps to go.

Doubek took the checkered flag under safety car conditions.

“Yes, I did it again! I’m so happy to be in Victory Lane again after my first NWES win yesterday,” said Doubek. “It was a tough race but I managed to stay at front. It was not easy with the rain tyres on the drying track and the No. 98 was pushing a lot. He was involved in a crash so I was able to keep the first position when the race ended behind the safety car. Thanks to my team for the great car this weekend.”

While Doubek defended his lead, his teammate Vittorio Ghirelli climbed his way up and took advantage of the incident involving Derdaele and Risitano to grab second place on the podium.

Shadow Racing Cars by 42 Racing’s Francesco Garisto was third under the checkered flag and won the race in the Rookie Trophy. After a challenging weekend in Vallelunga, the Italian stepped on the EuroNASCAR 2 podium for the first time in his young career.

Andre Castro, who missed the race on Saturday, started from 20th place and made an incredible comeback right into the top five. The American DF1 Racing driver gained the most positions in the race, earning four bonus points and crossing the finish line in fourth.

Alessandro Brigatti closed the top five in a battered No. 8 Feed Vict Racing Camaro, but was penalized after the race for causing an accident. The penalty demoted the Italian to 11th.

A blissfully happy Arianna Casoli ended up fifth and celebrated her best ever NASCAR Whelen Euro Series finish to date. The Italian also won the Legend Trophy and the Lady Trophy. Despite the crash, Derdaele finished sixth ahead of Simon Pilate, who completed the first full race in his career. The two Belgians also stepped on the Rookie Trophy podium.

Marko Stipp Motorsport’s Evgeny Sokolovsky and Mishumotors’ Eric Quintal were eighth and ninth and closed the Legend Trophy podium. Vladimiros Tziortzis closed the top 10.

Several big names did not make it to the finish line. Nicholas Risitano, Guillaume Dumarey, Andreas Jochimsen and Julia Landauer were all involved in accidents over the course of the 15-lap race.
