MLB allows teams to give refunds for lost games

Published in Baseball
Tuesday, 28 April 2020 12:33

Major League Baseball is allowing teams to offer refunds to fans for games currently not being played due to the coronavirus pandemic. Previously, games were considered postponed, instead of canceled, allowing teams to hold on to revenue generated from ticket sales.

But with little chance of MLB playing 162 games this season, the league has decided to allow for refunds. MLB is not requiring refunds, and each team will set its own policy, with many likely offering a credit for 2021 as an option. Teams can announce their new policies beginning Wednesday.

The decision comes a week after two fans filed a complaint in California, seeking class-action certification on behalf of fans seeking refunds. Additionally, several state attorney general offices around the country had received complaints about the no-refund policy.

MLB has no start date for the 2020 season.

Though baseball could still return this summer, it's likely to be without fans in attendance for at least a portion of the season -- which would kick in another set of refunds.

White House talks reopening plan with leagues

Tuesday, 28 April 2020 13:20

Chief medical officers from major sports leagues participated in a call Tuesday with Seema Verma, who is a member of the White House coronavirus task force and administrator for the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The call, according to a White House official, was to go over how sports play a role in President Donald Trump's plan for opening up America amid the coronavirus pandemic. Verma also updated league medical officials on the latest testing available and encouraged them to follow guidelines established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Among those representing the various sports leagues were officials from Major League Baseball, the NFL, the NBA, the WNBA, the NHL, the PGA Tour, the LPGA Tour, the NCAA, the College Football Playoff, the National Women's Soccer League, NASCAR, PGA of America, the Masters Tournament, the United States Tennis Association, as well as a few other organizations.

The PGA Tour was among the first professional sports leagues to announce an intention to return to play, with plans to open the revised schedule on June 8 with the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.

The first four tournaments of the new schedule will be played without fans in attendance, and the PGA Tour has acknowledged the need for safety precautions that will have to be implemented at the events.

Verma emphasized to the league officials the importance of finding innovative ways to allow sports while keeping the athletes, coaches, staff and fans safe. She also emphasized the president's commitment to supporting the efforts to reopen in a way that is consistent with public health data.

Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby represented the CFP on the call, which he said lasted over an hour, and he said that Dr. Brian Hainline was on for the NCAA.

"They just told us what they knew, and told us they were anxious to help in any way they could," Bowlsby said. "We learned that there were likely going to be a lot more tests available, both the antibody tests and point of contact tests, which was a good thing for all of the pro guys and colleges.

"They said the number of tests was going to go up dramatically in the coming months," Bowlsby added when asked if he was told that schools would be able to test every player and coach. "They thought we were going to have the necessary tests to do what we needed to do."

Bowlsby said there are still "too many unknowns" to determine when the fall season might start.

"Getting the best information from the most authoritative source is always a good thing," he said.

ESPN's Heather Dinich contributed to this report.

Frisby and Halanukonuka to leave Glasgow

International duo Nick Frisby and Siua Halanukonuka are to leave Glasgow Warriors at the end of this season.

Australian scrum-half Frisby, 27, has made 21 appearances after joining from Bordeaux in summer 2018.

And 33-year-old Tonga tight-head Halanukonuka has played 33 games since arriving a year earlier, although a calf injury has kept him out this term.

"Nick and Siua are great men and have both given a lot to the club," Glasgow head coach Dave Rennie said.

With the Pro14 season currently suspended due to coronavrius, Scottish Rugby is to be part of talks on 5 May with sports minister Joe Fitzpatrick over a phased return to action.

Rennie is to depart at the end of the campaign, having agreed to replace Michael Cheika as Australia head coach, while coach Jason O'Halloran and lock Exeter Chiefs-bound Jonny Gray are also moving on.

VIDEO: Social Distancing With Jim Hanks

Published in Racing
Tuesday, 28 April 2020 11:00

Ralph Sheheen is back with a new episode of Social Distancing! This time he talks with Must See Racing’s Jim Hanks, who reveals details surrounding a new event scheduled for August at the Indianapolis Speedrome!

Chris Wood, the Hampshire left-arm seamer, has revealed an 11-year fight against gambling addiction.

Wood, who has won four white-ball trophies with Hampshire since making his first-team debut in 2010, has not placed a bet since December 2018 after a long battle against addiction. He has regularly suffered from long-term injuries, which he believes contributed significantly to his issues.

He has sought help through the charity Sporting Chance, set up by former Arsenal and England footballer Tony Adams, after coming across them at a Professional Cricketers' Association (PCA) talk ahead of the 2019 season. The PCA officially partnered with the charity in March after 85 members - including 40 current players - were diagnosed with issues related to their mental health last year.

In a Sporting Chance podcast, Wood began his story with his parents' separation when he was eight years old, and recalled turning down a night out with some Hampshire team-mates after winning the Friends Provident T20 in 2010 in order to gamble away the prize money he had won from the tournament.

He also described walking off the pitch after fielding in a T20 in 2012 and "not having a clue what had just happened" because he was only focused on whether the bet he had placed before the innings had won. "It was quite scary actually, playing there in front of 8,000 or 10,000 people and I'm not even present," he said.

"I was gambling every day and I started to get self-destruction thoughts, not necessarily suicidal thoughts as such but thoughts such as 'do I have a place here?' I didn't necessarily go to the lengths of thinking of ways that I could do it but the thoughts started to arise.

"All day every day all I wanted to do was to sedate my feelings through gambling. I couldn't do anything else.

"I have nothing to hide anymore, I am not scared of who I am. I like talking about my situation now because it gives me a sense of achievement of where I have come and it gives me a sense of power again that I can control my own thoughts and feelings.

"I am going to have to deal with this for every single day for the rest of my life and not get complacent."

Ian Thomas, the director of the Professional Cricketers' Trust, said that he believed Wood was the first cricketer to admit to a gambling addiction during their career.

"He has come a very long way to now be in a position to be so honest which I am sure will resonate with people who have faced similar situations," Thomas said. "Chris has put in a lot of hard work and persistence to reach this stage of confronting his addiction publicly and as he explains, it has been a long process with many setbacks before he has reached this point.

Wood signed a new white-ball-only contract with Hampshire ahead of the 2020 season, and was due to play for the Oval Invincibles in the inaugural season of the Hundred.

TAMPA, Fla. -- Tom Brady's accidental "QB sneak" that made news last week -- when he entered the home of offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich's neighbor instead of Leftwich's house -- did more than provide a few laughs around the NFL.

It led to multiple teams inquiring if the Tampa Bay Buccaneers violated the NFL's "dead period" prior to the virtual offseason program, the league confirmed Tuesday.

The NFL investigated and determined that no violation of offseason work rules occurred.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, NFL players and nonessential personnel are forbidden from entering team facilities and from conducting the league's originally scheduled offseason programs, which includes classroom instruction and conditioning. Instead, the NFL created a virtual offseason program for teams, which started Monday for teams with returning coaches.

The program is strictly virtual and consists of three weeks of classroom instruction via video conferencing. It also includes virtual workouts and non-football educational programs.

The concern among teams that reached out to the league was that in-person instruction was taking place. A source close to the situation told ESPN last week that Brady was merely coming over to retrieve a playbook, which is consistent with the league's findings that were first reported by NFL Network.

ESPN's Dianna Russini contributed to this report.

Nix decommits from UCLA to join G League

Published in Basketball
Tuesday, 28 April 2020 11:26

Five-star point guard Daishen Nix is decommitting from UCLA and signing with the new G League pathway program, the league announced Tuesday.

"I think it was the right thing for me because it was a family thing and a myself thing," Nix told the Los Angeles Times. "Playing in G League is basically getting me ready for the NBA draft. It's just one step below the NBA."

Nix's discussions with the G League took place over the past few days, sources told ESPN.

Nix is the third player to join the G League from the 2020 class, following No. 1 prospect Jalen Green and five-star forward Isaiah Todd, both of whom made the decision earlier this month. Nix is the first player to renege on a signed letter of intent to join the G League.

Nix was ranked No. 20 in the ESPN 100 for 2020 and is No. 12 in ESPN's most recent 2021 mock draft.

Former G League president Malcolm Turner told ESPN's Jonathan Givony in October 2018 -- when the professional pathway was initially created -- that the league would not pursue players already committed to colleges.

Nix, a 6-foot-4 point guard from Trinity International School (Nevada), signed with UCLA in November after committing in August. He chose the Bruins over Kentucky, Maryland, Alabama and Kansas.

He was UCLA coach Mick Cronin's first commitment since being named the Bruins' coach in April 2019. Nix was expected to start at point guard next season.

Gordon, D-Wade talked, cool with diss track

Published in Basketball
Tuesday, 28 April 2020 11:17

That's a wrap on the rap. Aaron Gordon said Tuesday that he and Dwyane Wade don't have any ill will over the Orlando Magic star's "diss" track that called out Wade for his vote in the dunk contest.

Wade was one of three judges -- along with Hall of Fame forward Scottie Pippen and actor Chadwick Boseman -- who gave Gordon a score of 9 during the dunk-off, resulting in Gordon losing the title to Miami's Derrick Jones Jr.

Gordon put out a track titled "9 OUT OF 10" calling out Wade. The former Heat star responded on Twitter, saying "trademark 9/10, make some money off it. That's free advice that I won't charge him for it, since I costed him a mill..."

"I hear that and I kinda just am like, I think that was a response to the diss track without going back into the studio," Gordon said during an interview on SportsCenter. "So I take it with a little pinch of salt. But it's really cool, man. Me and D-Wade, we talked a little bit about it -- he told me he liked the song; I told him I liked his wine. So everything's good."

Gordon, 24, said making the song helped him process the event.

"People would ask me for it, so I just gave the people what they wanted, just my perspective," he said. "I had to talk a lot about my opinion and my perspective on the dunk contest, so I thought this was a fun, creative, expressive, uplifting way to voice my opinion and tell the world what I was going through and what I was seeing on that day."

After 20 Years, Sprint Cars Returning To The Speedrome

Published in Racing
Tuesday, 28 April 2020 09:00

HOLLY, Mich. — When racing is fully able to resume across the United States, the Must See Racing Sprint Car Series presented by Engine Pro will enter unchartered territory.

The 410ci winged asphalt sprint car series will stage its first event at the historic Indianapolis Speedrome, in a two-day spectacular that will also include pavement midgets and TQ midgets, while leading into the rescheduled 104th Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge on Aug. 23.

The Indyana Shootout will kick off on Thursday, Aug. 20 with a full program for the midget division, which will run under many of the same rules as the popular Rumble in Fort Wayne indoor event, a race that has enjoyed success for more than two decades. An open tire rule will be in effect for the midgets.

Indianapolis Speedrome was the birthplace of ESPN’s Thursday Night Thunder telecasts that rose to prominence during the 1980s.

National, regional, D2, Focus and Kenyon midgets will all be eligible to compete at the Speedrome — including the popular Munchkin midgets which have only competed at the Rumble in recent years.

The Mighty TQ Midgets — a traveling three-quarter midget series — Ford Oval and Figure 8 classes will also contest full programs as part of the Thursday racing card, while practice will be held for both the Must See Racing sprint cars and the Speedrome Late Models.

Headlining Thursday night’s sprint car festivities will be Must See Racing’s unique Rumble for the Record exhibition event — a king-of-the-hill style speed trial pitting five winged sprint cars against five winged late models in an effort to lower the fifth-mile oval’s all-time track record.

No rules will be in place for the late model class during the Rumble for the Record, opening up the possibility for several interesting car designs.

Friday, Aug. 21 will feature a complete show for the Must See Racing sprint cars, including a 50-lap feature split into twin 25-lap segments.

The midgets and Mighty TQ Midgets will also return to the card on Friday, joined by the Factory Front Wheel Drive class.

Also on Friday night, will be the finale to the Rumble for the Record, featuring the fastest sprint car and fastest late model from Thursday’s preliminary time-attack battles in a head-to-head showdown.

The fastest driver of the pair will take home a $500 prize and the “King of Quick Time” title.

Indianapolis Speedrome’s 74-year history has seen winged sprint car competition only once, on Aug. 11, 2000, when Gary Fedewa drove to victory in a 100-lap sprint car feature from eighth on the grid over Rick Holley and Mike Ling.

The Indyana Shootout sprint car feature will pay $2,500 to win and $500 to start, while the midgets will race for $2,000 to win and $250 to start on Thursday and Friday.

Tuesday’s announcement gives Hoosier State fans two pavement open-wheel events in the region during Indianapolis 500 week, with the revival of the Night Before The 500 set for Aug. 22 at nearby Lucas Oil Raceway in Clermont, Ind.

Must See Racing President Jim Hanks and Indyana Shootout co-promoter Michael Moore are aware there could be potential overlap between fields for the two events, but are confident in the capability of success for both events.

In the spirit of cooperation, the Speedrome program concludes on Friday night, allowing for midget participants to compete on Saturday at Lucas Oil Raceway, while the majority of the winged Must See Racing teams do not compete regularly in non-winged sprint car competition.

“First off, we are delighted to work with the Indianapolis Speedrome and to be able to add a new venue to our Must See Racing schedule. It has been 20 years since sprint cars battled on the fifth-mile oval there and we couldn’t be more excited to bring the world’s fastest short track cars there for this blockbuster event,” said Hanks. “Historically, for many years there were multiple major events in the Indianapolis area leading into the Indianapolis 500, including the Pay Less Little 500 and the Night Before The 500, which ran on the same night for many years and were both successful in their own right.

“We believe this is a tremendous opportunity to put our drivers in front of a passionate racing audience during one of the biggest weeks in all of motorsports and can’t wait to get things going at the Speedrome in August.”

The Indyana Shootout will be telecast on the award-winning SPEED SPORT presented by Hendrick Automotive Group series on MAVTV, hosted by SPEED SPORT President and veteran broadcaster Ralph Sheheen. Additional coverage details will be announced at a later date.
