Sun’s rising: Chinese star soaring to the top

Published in Table Tennis
Saturday, 10 August 2019 02:58

Everyday, the planets, stars, moon and sun all rise in the east. As if following a known fact of life, China continues to produce some of the world’s best talent in international table tennis and this is no more evident than the rise of a certain Sun Yingsha.

Birth of the junior Sun-star

Three years ago, 2016 saw Japanese female stars Mima Ito and Miu Hirano burst onto the scene. Questions were being asked whether they could halt China’s domination of the women’s game. Naturally, their strong performances started to steal the headlines, the spotlight very much on them. However, at the same time, China were nurturing their very own Millennial star in the making: the combative, determined and powerful attacker, Sun Yingsha.

Then just 16 years of age, Sun took no more than her debut display on the ITTF World Tour to display her quality to the world. Winning the 2017 Japan Open women’s singles title, the media and everyone associated to the sport started to sit up and take notice.

Her opponent in the final, then world no.5 Chen Meng spoke about what a composed athlete Sun was:

“She has her own style, she plays at pace and is mature with her game. Older players feel pressure when playing someone younger but I prepared well mentally, I managed to give everything I’ve got, but she was the worthy winner.” Chen Meng

From day one, Sun Yingsha’s greatest asset has to be her mental strength – how nothing seems to faze her. No matter who she plays, her ideals remain the same.

Shortly after winning in Japan, Sun was at it again, saving match points against compatriot and fellow Chinese wonder star Wang Manyu to win the 2017 World Junior Championships.

Relentless in her pursuit of glory, she followed up this success by winning the women’s singles gold as well as the mixed team gold with compatriot Wang Chuqin at the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games.

Doing so, she matched China’s Gu Yuting’s record of holding the two major junior titles at the same time. Yuting had previously won the Youth Olympic Games in 2010 in Singapore and the World Junior Championships in Rabat in 2013, but Sun – in her style of being different – did it in consecutive years.

And yet, all this came after a series of setbacks about which she was not about to hide from:

“During my preparations for the 2018 Asian Games, I lost to Kasumi Ishikawa and Yui Hamamoto. I felt very depressed at that time. Our coach Li Sun (Head Coach of China Women’s Team) punished me to run 10,000 meters. As I was running, I finally came around and thought: What does this matter? The stronger players all think it is normal to lose some matches when you are young.” Sun Yingsha

Moving in to the spotlight

Since then, Sun has continued her meteoric rise across seasons and tournaments with sensational performances. For instance, winning the 2019 Japan Open in Sapporo gave her the unique record of being the only player to have won twice on the ITTF World Tour after starting as a qualifier.

Her compact style of play, with over the table and near the net both being assets on the attack, enables Sun to keep breaking and making such records with remarkable consistency. Her speed of thought is matched by quick feet and outstanding positional sense. Indeed, she’s always prepared to step around the backhand to execute her deadly forehands.

While her progress has been well-documented, so has her ability to enhance the rivalry with her Japanese competitors. Last November, Mima Ito had just won the 2018 Swedish Open by beating Chinese elites Liu Shiwen, Ding Ning and Zhu Yuling quite convincingly. With Ito’s reputation the highest in her career to date, people were starting to tip her as a serious challenger at the Liebherr 2019 ITTF World Table Tennis Championships.

In round three, however, she would have to meet no other than Sun Yingsha, who might have been just as determined to win as to avenge her compatriot’s prior defeats. Sun was totally prepared for Ito and executed her tactics to perfection. The return of serve, her skill over the table completely nullified the first three attacking strokes of Ito. Here you can see just how she secured this stunning victory in Budapest:

It is also fascinating to know that her progress has not just been limited to the singles game. Playing doubles with a few select partners, Sun’s last four results in major competition are a sight to behold. She has won gold medals at the World Table Tennis Championships and the 2019 Qatar Open with Wang Manyu. Add to that silver medals at the 2019 Japan Open and Hungarian Open with Wang Manyu and Chen Meng respectively. Sun is very much a team player too.

The might of a robust mind

What remains an extremely interesting aspect of Sun’s rise, is how she has managed to avoid being in the shadow of her immensely successful senior compatriots. Over the last couple of years, Sun has faced all of the highest-ranked opponents at major tournaments, and yet she keeps coming through her battles with flying colours.

At the 2019 Australian Open, she defeated Ding Ning in comprehensive fashion, winning the final 4-0 – and the first game by a crushing 11-1 scoreline. This came at a time where the “Queen of Hearts” was transforming into the “Queen of Comebacks” but against the rising Sun she had no dice.

Speaking at a recent interview, Sun had the following to say when quizzed about the influence of having Liu Shiwen and Ding Ning as her compatriots and opponents.

“I like to watch their interviews sometimes. For sure their experience is a very good material for me to learn from. It is not about if my experience is the same as theirs, but the least I can do is to understand what they say and start thinking like they do. Right now I am only 18 years old. All I need to do is to fight. If I want to become the no.1 player in Team China one day, I believe I will need to have a high level both in terms of my skills and mentality. My plan for the coming years is just to fight with more courage.” Sun Yingsha

It is this kind of statement that one wants when you see a prodigy coming through the ranks. Sun’s senior compatriots are sure to be swelling with pride as they see yet another Chinese woman becoming a force to be reckoned with at the highest levels of international table tennis.

However, sometimes they might not enjoy just how robust she can be – as evidenced here when Liu Shiwen was made to suffer by the immense quality of Sun’s topspin forehands.

This was another example of a match where even though the odds were stacked against the younger Chinese, she did not let that affect her for one second.

The 18-year-old has never been shy to call a spade a spade, as was shown again in this quote from her interview with the Chinese media. She was asked to rate herself out of 100 at the China National Championships:

“95. I cannot give myself 100. I hope I can still make progress and fight to reach my goals. I am satisfied with my performance here. I won all of my matches except in the mixed doubles first round.” Sun Yingsha

With that kind of mental balance, the table tennis fraternity knows that for Sun Yingsha, her destiny is in her hands alone. China’s next big thing is already here and now the world knows it too.

All secured first places in their initial stage groups; at the quarter-final stage it was success against the outfits that had ended the day as runners up, precedence was asserted.

In the men’s team event, the top seeds, the Brazilian trio comprising Hugo Calderano, Eric Jouti and Gustavo Tsuboi recorded a 3-0 win in opposition to Paraguay’s Marcelo Aguirre, Santiago Osorio and Alejandra Toranzos. Similarly, Argentina’s Gaston Alto, Horacio Cifuentes and Pablo Tabachnik showed no charity when facing Puerto Rico’s Brian Afanador, Daniel Gonzalez and Angel Naranjo.

Meanwhile, for the United States trio of Kanak Jha, Nikhil Kumar and Nicholas Tio, as well as for Cuba’s Jorge Campos, Livan Martinez and Andy Pereira, life was only marginally more testing.

The United States recorded a 3-1 win in opposition to the Dominican Republic’s Samuel Galvez, Emil Santos and Wu Jiaji; by the same margin Cuba ended the hopes of Canada’s Jeremy Hazin, Marko Medjugorac and Eugene Wang.

The players to cause the problems for the victors were principally the medallists earlier in the week in the men’s singles events; for the Dominican Republic Wu Jiaji beat Nikhil Kumar (11-2, 11-3, 11-5), for Canada, Eugene Wang partnered Marko Medjugorac to doubles success in opposition to Jorge Campos and Livan Martinez (13-11, 7-11, 12-10, 11-4).

Success for Cuba but they came mightily close to defeat; the score-line does not necessarily reflect the intensity of the fixture. In the third match of the engagement, Livan Martinez needed the full five games to beat Marko Medjugorac (11-9, 6-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-6), as did Jorge Campos against Jeremy Hazin in the contest that brought proceedings to a conclusion. Tension mounting, Jorge Campos withstood a spirited fightback by the Canadian to emerge successful by the minimal two point margin in the decider (11-8, 11-5, 10-12, 9-11, 11-9).

A dramatic contest, in the counterpart women’s team quarter-finals, decisive results were the order of the day, not one individual match was surrendered by the winners.

Impressively, the United States trio formed Amy Wang, Wu Yue and Lily Zhang accounted for Cuba’s Daniela Fonseca, Idalys Lovat and Lizdainet Rodriquez; Puerto Rico’s Adriana Diaz, Melanie Diaz and Daniely Rios ended the hopes of Argentina’s Camila Argüelles, Ana Codina and Candela Molero.

Likewise, Brazil’s Caroline Kumahara, Bruna Takahashi and Jessica Yamada overcame Chile’s Judith Morales, Daniela Ortega and Paulina Vega; Canada’s Alicia Côté, Ivy Liao and Zhang Mo halted any aspirations harboured by Mexico’s Clio Barcenas, Monica Muñoz and Yadira Silva.

Notably, in the concluding match of the fixture, Zhang Mo beat Yadira Silva (9-11, 11-8, 4-11, 11-6, 11-9) and thus avenged the defeat experienced earlier in the week when she had suffered in the second round of the women’s singles event, securing just one game (10-12, 11-8, 11-9, 11-8, 11-8).

On the day that closes the curtain in Lima, play commences on Saturday 10th August at 10.00 am (local time), the finals’ programme begins at 5.00 pm (local time); there is no third place fixture, two bronze medals are awarded.

Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones says he is relishing facing England in their first World Cup warm-up game after training camps.

If Wales win, they will officially become World Rugby's number-one ranked team after Australia knocked New Zealand off top spot.

England trio ruled out of World Cup warm-up against Wales

Published in Rugby
Saturday, 10 August 2019 05:33

England trio Henry Slade, Sam Underhill and Ruaridh McConnochie have been ruled out of the World Cup warm-up game against Wales at Twickenham on Sunday.

Wing Ruaridh McConnochie was set to make his England debut but has a hip injury.

Flanker Underhill and centre Slade were also expected to start but have respective knee and toe problems.

Joe Cokanasiga, Jonathan Joseph and Lewis Ludlum will now start in the first of four warm-up games.

Northampton flanker Ludlam was originally due to make his debut off the bench.

England sevens star McConnochie only switched to the XV-a-side version last summer.

His absence against Wales will mean he misses a chance to impress before England head coach Eddie Jones names his final 31-man World Cup squad on Monday.

Meanwhile, Jones has refused to confirm a report in The Times that an altercation took place between Mike Brown and Ben Te'o during the side's training camp in Treviso.

The Rugby Football Union admitted an incident did happen in Treviso.

Jones said: "No I'm not able to confirm that. I'm not able to confirm. I think I've answered the question."

Wales are now unofficially ranked the number one side in the world after Australia defeated New Zealand in the Rugby Championship.

The All Blacks have provisionally slipped off the top spot for the first time in 10 years following their 47-26 defeat in Perth.

Wales will officially be ranked top on Monday if they avoid defeat against England on Sunday at Twickenham.

The Wallabies also await Wales in the pool stage in Japan.

Warren Gatland's side are currently boast a 14-match winning sequence, including a rare win against Australia in November, 2019.

This includes a third Grand Slam since the New Zealander took charge of Wales ahead of the 2008 Six Nations.

The last of those triumphs came as Wales won the 2019 with victory over Ireland in Cardiff in March.

Wales officially being ranked number one in the world would be the first time since the system was introduced in 2003.

South Africa were the last side to be ranked above the All Blacks as number one in the world, in November 2009, with New Zealand since winning the 2011 and 2015 World Cups.

It could be an afternoon of records at Twickenham with captain Alun Wyn Jones setting a Welsh record 135th Test appearance when he captains the team in Sunday's World Cup warm-up against England.

The 33-year-old will make his 126th appearance for Wales, having also won nine British and Irish Lions caps.

He beats the mark set by prop Gethin Jenkins, who made 129 appearances for Wales and played in five Lions Tests.

"It's not really a focus for me but it's validation for the support network I've had throughout my career," said Jones.

"Not just in the professional realms, but my family, my wife and my children too. That makes me proud, but a of people have contributed to my career from intermediate level, domestic level and international level.

"There are a lot more people for me to thank. That is more special for me than the number itself."

Australia recorded their highest-ever score against the All Blacks as they beat the world champions 47-26 in the Rugby Championship in Perth.

It was the Wallabies' first win over New Zealand since 2017.

The All Blacks were reduced to 14 men when Scott Barrett was dismissed for a dangerous tackle just before half-time.

Defeat means they have provisionally lost the top spot in the world rankings for the first time in 10 years, with Wales set to occupy first place.

Winger Reece Hodge scored two of Australia's six tries to help them record their highest points tally in 165 Tests against the All Blacks.

Lock Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, scrum-half Nic White, winger Marika Koroibete and full-back Kurtley Beale also crossed in front of a packed house of 61,241.

The win also gave Australia their first back-to-back victories in the Rugby Championship since 2016.

Australia produced a superb first 10 minutes to establish a 10-0 lead before two All Blacks tries gave the visitors the lead.

Two Christian Lealiifano penalties gave the Wallabies a 16-12 half-time advantage, by which point they also had an extra man, following Barrett's departure for a a no-arms tackle on Michael Hooper.

Another blistering start to a half saw the Australians extend that lead by a further 10 points in nine second-half minutes before a converted Beauden Barrett try got the All Blacks back within seven.

But three more home tries, despite one further reply from New Zealand's Ngani Laumape, saw Australia give themselves a chance of regaining the Bledisloe Cup they last won in 2002. The second Bledisloe Test takes place in Auckland next week.

Tyler Hewitt Is The BOSS Of Gas City

GAS CITY, Ind. — Tyler Hewitt showed everyone he was the boss Friday night at Gas City I-69 Speedway.

Hewitt used the low groove to win the 25-lap Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series non-winged 410 sprint car feature by .313 of a second over a high-groove-flying Thomas Meseraull. The victory is Hewitt’s first in a sprint car.

Matt Westfall used the low groove like Hewitt did and was .026 behind Meseraull at the checkered.

Meseraull started on the pole and led the first six laps before Hewitt slipped under him in turn two for the lead. Despite a yellow on lap 11 and a red on lap 14, Hewitt continued to lead with Meseraull in hot pursuit a few yards higher up the track.

Westfall passed Cole Ketcham on a restart with 14 laps down to move into third, and then got under Meseraull for second coming out of turn four working lap 16. The trio duked it out the rest of the way, and on lap 22 they were three abreast with Hewitt leading, Westfall second and Meseraull third.

The following lap Meserall passed both Hewitt and Westfall in turn four to lead lap 23, but Hewitt passed him back in turn two on the white-flag lap. The two low- groove yellow cars of Hewitt and Westfall took the checkered with Meserall between them in the high lane. Ketcham finished fourth and Garrett Abrams placed fifth in the 20-car field.

Defending champion Matt Hederick started second and led all 20 laps of the United Midget Racing Ass’n  three-quarter midget feature despite five caution flags that tightened up the field. Tate Martz placed second. Matt Lux passed Johnny Kringas in turn two on the last lap to nail down third. Kringas was fourth and Brandon Gray finished fifth.

Another new winner at the quarter-mile clay oval was Clayton Bryant, who won the 20-lap UMP modified feature in the Kingsland Motor Company No. 114. He started on the pole and led the whole way despite five yellows that let his rivals draw near. Zeke McKenzie started sixth but passed Dillon Nusbaum on lap 12 to nail down the runner-up honors. Nusbaum, the defending track champion, finished third followed by Jim Mallery. Last week’s winner, Scott Orr, started 16th in the 20-car field but finished fifth.

The bounty on the Headley family in the hornet division remained unclaimed, as James Headley was victorious in that 15-lap feature. He led the first eight laps until his son, James Headley Jr., passed him on the outside in turn four working lap nine. Headley Jr. slowed on the frontstretch on lap 13 with mechanical difficulties, however, and Gage Allen ended up taking the runner-up honors. Jacob Beard finished third, Alyssa Clark placed fourth and Joey Eastes finished fifth.

Andy Bishop powered by polesitter J.J. Nordman on the outside in turn tow working lap three and then dominated the rest of the 12-lap street stock feature with the Thompson Trucking No. 14 for his sixth victory of the year. Nordman finished second followed by Mike Fincher. The winner’s son, Dalton Bishop, competed in his first stock car race and placed fourth. Larry Persinger was fifth.

Man United still short in midfield - Giggs

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 10 August 2019 05:04

Manchester United have ended the summer transfer window short in midfield, according to the club's record appearance-maker Ryan Giggs.

United failed to add any midfielders, despite Marouane Fellaini having left in January and Ander Herrera joining Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.

- When does the transfer window close?

The Old Trafford club have so far kept hold of Paul Pogba, despite the France international having said publicly that he wants a "new challenge," and sources have told ESPN FC he is unlikely leave before the European deadline on Sept. 2.

"I think we need a couple more midfielders," Giggs told ESPN FC.

"If Paul Pogba goes -- we talk about culture change -- but obviously you need quality. You might not like it but come Sunday if Paul Pogba isn't in that midfield or the week after, and we've got the midfielders that we've got at our club, then we're short. That's the problem."

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has cracked down on discipline since taking over from Jose Mourinho in December while the Norwegian has made a point of only signing players who are committed to coming to Old Trafford -- prompting the club to cool interest in Paulo Dybala and Christian Eriksen.

Both Pogba and Romelu Lukaku made it clear they wanted to leave United this summer but while the Belgium international got his move to Inter Milan, Pogba stayed put.

And Giggs' former United teammate and fellow Class of 92 member Gary Neville told ESPN FC he believes not signing a midfielder was behind the reason Solskjaer did not sanction Pogba's sale to Real Madrid

"I think there are three or four players at Old Trafford who have higher levels of quality that in a perfect world, Ole would probably like them all out at once," Neville said.

"But actually, if they left it would weaken the team that badly it'd mean that they wouldn't challenge for the Champions League. I think what Ole has to do is to get rid of one at a time. I think it's a clever transition out of what has been a poor transfer strategy for the last four or five years.

"You can't get out of it in one year, it's going to take two or three years of good culture and tone, in terms of what they're doing, to get out of what they've done. You can't lose Lukaku, Pogba, [Anthony] Martial all in one -- you'd be absolutely decimated.

"The dressing room would be shot to pieces. You could maybe lose them over a period of two or three years if they wanted to leave."

Ex-United midfielder Paul Scholes has seen players try to leave United before and said he believes Pogba can win back the fans as long as he proves his commitment to the cause.

"It happened with Cristiano [Ronaldo] and Wayne [Rooney] so I think it'll be accepted," Scholes told ESPN FC.

"Paul is not a bad lad so as long as he is committed to the rest of the team and playing every week then there won't be a problem."

United open their Premier League campaign with a home clash against Chelsea on Sunday and Pogba has recovered from a back spasm to put himself in contention to start.

Sterling hits 3 in City win as VAR takes centre stage

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 10 August 2019 07:25

Manchester City forward Gabriel Jesus became the first player in Premier League history to have a goal ruled by the video assistant referee (VAR) during his side's 5-0 victory over West Ham, which included a hat trick for Raheem Sterling.

The Brazil international gave the reigning champions the lead in the first half before Sterling tapped home Kevin De Bruyne's pass on 51 minutes.

City thought they had third after a well-worked move involving Sterling and David Silva, which was finished off by Jesus -- only for referee Mike Dean to disallow the goal for offside following a consultation with VAR in the first season where the technology is present in the Premier League.

However, the third did eventually arrive on 75 minutes after Sterling was played in before delicately looping the ball over West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski -- yet only after another check with VAR.

City were given a penalty on 83 minutes after Diop's foul on Riyad Mahrez and, despite Sterling being on course for a hat-trick, Sergio Aguero stepped up and saw his tame effort saved.

But, following encroachment by Declan Rice, Dean ordered a retake and the Argentina international made no mistake with his second effort. Sterling did get his hat-trick in stoppage time as he tapped home past Fabianksi.

City boss Pep Guardiola handed a debut to record signing Rodri, but Joao Cancelo was left on the bench, while new West Ham signing Sebastien Haller started in attack for the hosts.

And Manuel Pellegrini's men started the game well, causing the visitors problems on the counterattack.

But they were behind on 25 minutes when Jesus squeezed the ball home from an acute angle following good work by Kyle Walker down the right flank.

City doubled their lead through Sterling and, after Jesus had seen his potential second chalked off by VAR, technology ensured the England international's second did count before adding a third late on, following Aguero's penalty.

The margin of victory sent City top above Liverpool, who had beaten Norwich 4-1 on Friday. West Ham travel to Brighton on Saturday in their next match before City host Tottenham later that same day.
