We're almost three-quarters of the way through the 2019 MLB season, and by now you've probably heard that this is the Year of the Home Run.

Whether it's the ball itself, the launch angle revolution, a generation of historic young sluggers or some combination of the three, home runs have had us buzzing all season. But even as baseballs keep leaving the yard at record rates -- the single-season mark, set in 2017, is certain to fall in the coming months -- it's hard to grasp the magnitude of it.

We challenged researcher Evan Wildstein and the rest of our friends at ESPN Stats & Information to mix math with the madness and present the most amazing home run-related stats of the season.

Here's how amazing the Year of the Home Run has gotten in several categories -- and where it could end up by the time it's over.

Jump to ...
The teams doing (and allowing) damage
The most surprising individual feats
The most amazing leaguewide numbers

The 'your team's home run records are all about to fall' division

1. The Minnesota Twins are on pace to break baseball's single-season home run record of 267.

Why it's so amazing: The record was set by the 2018 Yankees in 162 games. The Twins, who are on pace for 316 home runs, aren't the only team this season with a higher home run/game rate than those Yankees. The 2019 Yankees and Dodgers all have higher HR/G rates than the 2018 Yankees and the Astros are even with the pace, which means at this rate, the four highest team home run totals in MLB history could all come this season.

2. There are 14 teams on pace to break their single-season home run marks.

Why it's so amazing: If you thought the Year of the Home Run belonged to only the power-packed lineups at the top of the standings, this shows that nearly everyone is getting in on the fun. Beyond those 14 teams, there are another four with at least a shot at a new franchise record. That means 60 percent of the league could be crossing out its previous all-time team home run mark and writing 2019's final tally in the record book this offseason.

3. The Mariners hit or allowed a home run in 107 straight games.

Why it's so amazing: That's 38 more than the previous record, per Elias Sports Bureau research. On the other end of the scale, the 1913 Red Sox went a record 55 straight games without hitting or allowing a home run. The longest such streak this year is three games.

4. The Yankees hit a home run in 91 games through July 31.

Why it's so amazing: That's the most by a team before Aug. 1 in MLB history, eclipsing the previous record of 90 games held by the 2000 Blue Jays.

Earlier in the season, the Yankees became the first team in MLB history to hit a home run in 28 consecutive games, breaking the previous record of 27 set by the 2002 Rangers. The streak came to an end after three more games, setting the new mark at 31 straight contests.

What makes New York's bit of history here even more impressive is that 22 players have gone deep as the Yankees have battled injuries up and down their roster all season.

The 'special shout-out to the Minnesota Twins' division

5. The Minnesota Twins are five home runs away from setting their franchise record -- with 50 games left to play.

Why it's so amazing: Yes, we started with the Twins above, but what Minnesota is doing deserves its own section. In 1963 and 1964, the Twins had Harmon Killebrew swatting 40-plus home runs for the most powerful lineup in franchise history and led the majors in total homers by a healthy margin both seasons. In fact, Minnesota had reached 200 home runs four times in franchise history before blowing past the mark in July this season.

6. The Twins are the first team in MLB history to hit 50 home runs in three calendar months within a season.

Why it's so amazing: Pick your 2019 Minnesota Twins home run factoid, and chances are it will be amazing. This number emphasizes that Minnesota, like the rest of baseball's premier slugging teams, is doing it day in and day out for the duration of a season -- not riding one hot streak to franchise history.

7. When the Twins hosted the Yankees last month, the teams combined to hit 20 home runs in the series, and the balls traveled a total of 7,875 feet.

Why it's so amazing: Wondering what October is going to look like in the Year of the Home Run? This recent series between baseball's two most powerful lineups gave us a glimpse of a potential playoff matchup and just how bonkers things could get when every player in each lineup is a threat to leave the yard.

According to Elias research, the three-game series was the sixth in MLB history in which at least 20 home runs were hit. There were also a combined 57 runs and 80 hits in the series, the most by any two teams in a three-game series this season.

The 'special shout-out to the Baltimore Orioles' pitching for very different reasons' division

8. The Orioles have already allowed 223 home runs this year.

Why it's so amazing: If franchise records for hitting home runs are falling, it stands to reason that franchise records for giving up long balls are falling too -- and the Orioles have managed to distance themselves from everyone else when it comes to allowing gopher balls. The all-time record for home runs allowed by a pitching staff is 258 by the 2016 Reds, a number the O's should shatter this month.

One amazing fact that sums up the long ball problem for Baltimore's pitching staff: O's pitchers have given up five or more home runs in a game 15 times already this season, an MLB record.

9. The Orioles are yielding 3.15 home runs per game when they face the Yankees.

Why it's so amazing: There is a special kind of magic when baseball's best team at serving up home runs faces one of MLB's best at going deep. If you like home runs, you might want to tune in when the Orioles and Yankees play the final six games of their season series in the next two weeks.

The 'amazing individual performances' division

10. So far this season, 207 players have hit at least 10 home runs.

Why it's so amazing: It's tied for the fifth-highest total in a single season, but a quick trip down the home run leaderboard shows about 20 players sitting on nine home runs and another 20 or so at eight. In other words, this number is about to take another jump soon, and it's another example that the Year of the Home Run is about the astounding totals coming from everywhere -- not just the guys at the top.

11. There were four consecutive days when a player hit three home runs from July 23 to July 26.

Why it's so amazing: First it was Robinson Cano. Then Paul DeJong did it. After that, Nelson Cruz got in on the fun, and then it was Mookie Betts' turn. The four-day span was the most consecutive days with a three-homer game by a player in MLB history.

12. There have already been 16 three-homer games so far in 2019.

Why it's so amazing: The mark of most three-homer games in one season, 22 in 2001, is well within reach. Just last week, Cruz went deep three times in a game for the second time in a nine-day span and helped the 2019 total climb higher.

Of all the facts around this year's three-homer performances, Cruz becoming the first player to do it twice at age 39 stands out, especially when you add this to it: Ted Williams is the only player to have a pair of such games at age 38.

13. Three players had 30-plus home runs ... at the All-Star break.

Why it's so amazing: Although Christian Yelich, Pete Alonso and Cody Bellinger have all slowed a bit in the second half, they still have legitimate shots to reach the 50-homer mark this season -- as does Mike Trout, fresh off the first 13-homer month of his career. No matter where they finish the season, that trio of Yelich, Alonso and Bellinger became the first since 1998 to each hit 30 bombs by the break.

The 'really young guys making home run history' division

14. Ronald Acuna Jr. became the fourth-youngest player to reach 50 career home runs.

Why it's so amazing: Take a close look at this list of the youngest players at the time of their 50th career homers:

Mel Ott: 20 years, 166 days (Aug. 15, 1929)

Tony Conigliaro: 20 years, 238 days (Sept. 2, 1965)

Andruw Jones: 21 years, 136 days (Sept. 6, 1998)

Ronald Acuna: 21 years, 215 days (July 21, 2019)

Al Kaline: 21 years, 227 days (Aug. 2, 1956)

Ken Griffey Jr.: 21 years, 251 days (July 30, 1991)

Eddie Mathews: 21 years, 267 days (July 7, 1953)

Mickey Mantle: 21 years, 279 days (July 26, 1953)

Giancarlo Stanton: 21 years, 281 days (Aug. 16, 2011)

Frank Robinson: 21 years, 295 days (June 22, 1957)

This list is full of Hall of Famers and baseball icons, but what's also noteworthy is that every player on it except Stanton and Acuna debuted last century. In fact, Andruw Jones is the only player in the past 50 seasons to reach the milestone at a younger age than Acuna.

15. Gleyber Torres is three home runs away from becoming the third Yankees player with at least 50 homers through his age-22 season.

Why it's so amazing: General baseball rule: If you are on a list of all the Yankees to accomplish something, and Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio are the only two players ranked ahead of you, you've done something pretty amazing. Torres isn't going to catch either of the Hall of Famers ahead of him, but he is certainly in elite company here.

The 'it all adds up to this' division

16. There already have been more home runs this year (4,677) than in the entire 2014 season (4,186) or 2011 season (4,552).

Why it's so amazing: It's Aug. 6! The fact that we're already eclipsing full-season numbers from just a few years ago shows just how much has changed in a short amount of time.

17. There have been 1,000-plus home runs in every full month of the season so far.

Why it's so amazing: MLB has rewritten the record book for homers every month so far this season, and every time we thought there was no way this home run pace could keep up, it has.

18. We've had more five-homer games by a team this season than in any full season before this.

Why it's so amazing: Of all of the numbers here, this one might be the most bonkers. It's not just that the record for five-homer games by teams in a season has fallen. It's that it was set on July 17, just after the halfway point of the season.

19. There have been 131 home runs of at least 450 feet this season. There were just 82 of those all of the past season.

Why it's so amazing: Baseballs aren't just clearing fences -- we've seen a big spike in the number of really long home runs as well. On June 21, Rangers OF Nomar Mazara hit a 505-foot homer, by far the longest hit this season. We have seen five 480-plus-foot home runs this season, which surpasses the total from the previous season (four).

20. 2019 is on pace to smash the all-time home run record of 6,105 home runs.

Why it's so amazing: This is the big one. Just two years after the record-setting 2017 season, numbers are way, way up overall. In 2,430 games that year, an average of 2.51 home runs were hit per game. This season, through 1,689 games, a total of 4,677 homers have been hit -- a rate of 2.77 per game.

The question isn't if the home run record will fall in the coming months. It's just how high the new record will be by the time the Year of the Home Run comes to an end.

Kemba on Team USA dropouts: 'It's our chance'

Published in Basketball
Tuesday, 06 August 2019 07:27

A lot of attention has been paid to the players who won't be at Team USA training camp in preparation for the FIBA World Cup, but the players who are in attendance are grateful for the chance to represent their country.

"This is like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a lot of us," Boston Celtics guard Kemba Walker told reporters in Las Vegas on Monday. "I think a lot of us are happy those guys pulled out because this is our chance.

"It's our chance to get on the big stage and showcase our talent. A chance for us to do something new. It'll be a new-look team. Everybody is kind of doubting us, but I think we're hungry."

The Houston Rockets' James Harden and Eric Gordon, the Portland Trail Blazers' Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum, the Los Angeles Lakers' Anthony Davis and the Washington Wizards' Bradley Beal are among the star players who withdrew from Team USA training camp.

That leaves the Celtics' Walker, Marcus Smart and Jayson Tatum, the Lakers' Kyle Kuzma, the Toronto Raptors' Kyle Lowry, the Milwaukee Bucks' Khris Middleton and the Utah Jazz's Donovan Mitchell among the 15 players on the roster at training camp, which started Monday.

"Obviously, we play with more of a chip [on our shoulders]," Mitchell said, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "I think a lot of countries think they see an opening, so for us we have to go out there and compete and get ready. We're going to get every team's best shot."

Team USA coach Gregg Popovich said he is only worried about the players who are at training camp.

"I've said that we're going to be fine and by that what I really meant is that we're blessed with a lot of depth in USA Basketball," he said. "All of the players here want to be here, there's no question about it. And that's a big part of the battle itself. And so, when you look at the enthusiasm, the youth, the athleticism and versatility, that'll really work well for us because our depth will be a factor.

"These are not 'C' players. You've heard a lot of criticism about who isn't here, and I keep repeating that it's about who is here. There's some really good talent and it's going to be difficult getting to a 12-man roster when you really think about it. So, every day is important to these players and I would say today's effort was terrific. We had a great first day of practice. Certain individuals did an outstanding job. Overall, it was terrific."

The 2019 FIBA World Cup begins in China on Aug. 31. Team USA begins play against the Czech Republic on Sept. 1.

'HeatLifer' Haslem, 39, returns for 17th season

Published in Basketball

Miami Heat legend Udonis Haslem is returning to the team for his 17th NBA season on a veterans minimum contract worth just under $2.6 million for one year.

The team announced the deal shortly after the 39-year-old forward posted on Instagram on Tuesday hinting at his return.

Signed after going undrafted out of Florida in 2003, Haslem has played exclusively for the Heat since making his NBA debut. He was a part of all three of the franchise's championships and played a pivotal role in helping Miami go the distance in 2005-06.

He's now just the sixth player in league history to play such a long career with only one franchise.

"We are proud to welcome our captain back for a 17th season," Heat president Pat Riley said in a statement. "UD is the heart and soul of Miami and we are proud to have him help lead this team once again."

The Miami native is the Heat's all-time leader in rebounds and ranks in the top five in games played, starts, minutes, double-doubles and field goals made.

76ers' Simmons felt 'singled out' entering casino

Published in Basketball
Tuesday, 06 August 2019 09:00

MELBOURNE, Australia -- Philadelphia 76ers guard Ben Simmons has explained a social media post that seemed to imply he had been racially profiled by security staff at a Melbourne casino by saying he and his friends felt "singled out.''

Simmons posted a video on Instagram in which he asked why he and two black friends were asked for identification but another person in their group who is white was not. He deleted the post Tuesday morning, when it started making news and after the casino issued a statement saying its security staff routinely did ID checks on anyone who appears younger than 25.

Simmons, 23, recently became the highest-paid Australian athlete when he signed a five-year, $170 million contract extension with the 76ers. He apparently wasn't recognized by security at one of the casino's entry points Monday night. But he was allowed in at a second entry point after providing identification.

After appearing at a charity event Tuesday, he posted on Twitter to explain his earlier video.

The casino issued a statement saying its "internal security policy requires our security officers to check identification of those persons they believe to be under the age of 25, this is an enhanced safeguard to ensure that no one under the age of 18 is permitted entry to the casino floor as required by law.

"The group subsequently provided identification and were permitted entry ... [we] strenuously reject reports that it discriminated against a group of visitors last night.''

The Melbourne-born Simmons, whose father is African American, did not explain why he deleted the post.

Reports in Australian media said Simmons was staying at a hotel connected to the casino.

Simmons was selected for the Australian squad for some exhibition games against the U.S. team in Melbourne later this month and for the world championships in China starting next month, but he withdrew to focus on his preparations for the next NBA season.

Giants DFA 2B Panik in wake of Gennett trade

Published in Baseball
Tuesday, 06 August 2019 14:59

The San Francisco Giants designated second baseman Joe Panik for assignment on Tuesday, less than a week after acquiring Scooter Gennett from the Cincinnati Reds prior to the trade deadline.

Panik hit .235 with three homers and 27 RBIs in 103 games this season. In 643 career games with San Francisco, he hit .271 with 36 homers and 221 RBIs.

With the team turning second base over to Gennett, Panik became the odd man out on the roster.

"Nothing has driven me more than winning here in San Francisco," Panik said in a statement provided to multiple outlets. "I am forever grateful for the Giants taking the chance on me and allowing me to live out my life long dream. It is time for me to start the next chapter in my career. But in my heart I will always be a Giant."

A rookie in 2014, Panik played a large role that postseason as the Giants beat the Kansas City Royals for their third World Series championship in five seasons. In Game 7, Panik started a key double play when he dove to snare an Eric Hosmer grounder, then flipped the ball with his glove to shortstop Brandon Crawford, who threw to first.

Panik also had a clutch two-run homer off Adam Wainwright as the Giants beat the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series to reach the World Series.

Mariners' Beckham suspended for PED violation

Published in Baseball
Tuesday, 06 August 2019 11:36

Seattle Mariners infielder Tim Beckham has been suspended 80 games without pay after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.

Major League Baseball announced the suspension Tuesday, effective immediately.

Beckham, the former No. 1 overall draft selection, tested positive for Stanozolol, according to MLB.

"I was given a product from a trusted source, who had advised me that it was safe to take," Beckham said in a statement. "Regrettably, the product was tainted."

Beckham also said he presented his case to an independent arbitrator and that he is "disappointed in the result."

"I accept full responsibility for putting myself in this position," Beckham said. "I sincerely apologize to the Mariners' organization, the fans, my teammates, and my family for this mistake. I look forward to resuming my career once my suspension has been served."

Beckham, 29, was batting .237 with 15 home runs and 47 RBIs this season.

Selected No. 1 overall by Tampa Bay in the 2008 draft, Beckham is a career .249 hitter with 63 homers in parts of six seasons with the Mariners, Rays and Baltimore Orioles.

The Mariners released a statement on the suspension, saying the team was "disappointed" that Beckham violated the policy.

Discovering Olomouc

Published in Athletics
Tuesday, 06 August 2019 08:51

Jessica Whittington travelled to the Czech Republic to experience RunCzech’s Mattoni Olomouc Half Marathon

Described as a ‘hidden treasure’ of Europe, Olomouc is situated 179 miles south east of the Czech capital of Prague and for the past 10 years the city has welcomed runners for the annual Mattoni Olomouc Half Marathon.

The event forms part of the RunCzech series which now features nine races in the Czech Republic, including the popular Volkswagen Prague Marathon in May and the Birell Prague Grand Prix in September, plus two in Italy.

The series also incorporates initiatives such as the RunCzech Running League and EuroHeroes Challenge, designed to encourage both recreational runners and elites.

This year’s Olomouc Half Marathon took place on Saturday June 15, with a total of 10,078 runners taking part in the day’s events – 3597 in the family run and 6481 in the half-marathon, including me!

Olomouc

The ancient capital of Moravia is a beautiful, historic city which boasts impressive Baroque architecture, including the 32-metre-high Holy Trinity Column, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is from the main square Horní námestí, where the Holy Trinity Column can be found, that the Olomouc Half Marathon starts and finishes.

The sixth-largest city in the Czech Republic, Olomouc is home to around 100,000 residents as well as an ancient university, the original medieval astronomical clock, six Baroque fountains and many other fine and unique monuments.

The three main parks – Smetana, Cech and Bezruc – cover an area of almost 50 hectares, with Smetana Park home to the Flora Olomouc exhibitions which the half-marathon route passes through.

“Olomouc is the historical capital of Moravia with such a concentration of monuments,” says Olomouc guide Stefan Blaho. “Prague is so packed with tourists. If you want to relax, just come to Olomouc because it is quiet and I think it is a little bit like a hidden treasure in Europe.

“I would recommend having a cup of coffee in some of the excellent bars and restaurants, seeing the Archdiocesan Museum because it is the only one with the European Heritage Label in our country and I would recommend having a walk to discover Olomouc’s parks because they are something amazing.”

The race

The Mattoni Olomouc Half Marathon offered a couple of firsts for me as I had never before visited the Czech Republic and I had also never taken part in an evening road race. I was excited to experience both!

Arriving on the Friday, I took in some of the city’s stunning sights on my way to pick up my race number at the Moravia Sport Expo on the edge of the Smetana Park. It was a quick and easy process.

Race day features four events – the half-marathon, relay and ‘2Run’ (10+11km) starting at 7pm local time (6pm UK) and the 3.5km family run starting at 5pm.

I arrived as the family event was taking place and there was a nice vibe in the Horní námestí start and finish area, which was a short walk from the bag drop and toilets.

Heading to the start line I knew I would need to run well within myself as the temperature was still 30°C and the recent English weather hadn’t acclimatised me to that sort of heat!

There was a great mood as we took to the starting pens, with the music and location making it feel very atmospheric.

The square was lined with spectators as we headed on to the cobbled section of the course and out into the city. The heat was quite intense but, by around 8km, where the route heads out of the city and is much more open as it passes fields, the temperature had cooled slightly and there were frequent water stations and showers to pass through, as well as bands playing as part of the Marathon Music Festival.

I’ll admit I began to feel a little under the weather from that point on but there was great support as I wound my way back towards the Horní námestí from fellow runners, marshals and spectators. I was well looked after when I crossed the finish line and received my hard-earned medal!

EuroHeroes

Launched in 2018 with the support of European Athletics, the EuroHeroes initiative aims to highlight new sporting stars from the continent and motivate the public to get active. The inaugural series featured two events – the Mattoni Karlovy Vary Half Marathon and Mattoni Ceské Budejovice Half Marathon – and this year it has expanded to include the Olomouc event and another half-marathon in Ústí nad Labem on September 21.

All four events in the 2019 series have a five-star certification rating from European Athletics Running for All, a cornerstone of the governing body’s running strategy, which requires organisers to have fulfilled a stringent set of safety, organisation and quality checks.

The EuroHeroes Challenge, which offers an additional prize structure, requires athletes to compete in at least two of the four series events and points are achieved at each event, with the two highest sets of points contributing to each athlete’s ranking.

“This is a sport that has tremendous success,” says RunCzech president and IAAF Road Running Commission chairman Carlo Capalbo.

“It’s phenomenal. It needs fans and a TV audience. We needed to create local legends.”

He adds: “Of course, our races are open to everybody, but there is a focus in terms of elite – only European athletes in order that we can support our champions. Above all, there is one main goal – to inspire more and more people.”

From next year, the hope is that winners of the EuroHeroes Challenge will receive a wild card entry into the European Championships half-marathon, with Capalbo explaining that it is set to be discussed at the next European Athletics Council meeting.

Britain’s 2016 European 5000m medallist and two-time Olympian Steph Twell was among those in Olomouc and after finishing fifth in 75:57 explained how she is looking forward to seeing the initiative develop.

“The EuroHeroes concept has great room for potential to create more windows of opportunity for athletes to compete across the year,” said the British 10km road champion.

“I think this is a great platform to really take off on, to understand my new competition in this half-marathon distance, who will also run the marathon.

“It’s an opportunity now to help support myself a little bit. I think it opens a lot of potential for the future to incorporate planning my training and racing around something that can support athletes.”

The elite women’s race was won by Lilia Fisikovici of Moldova in 73:32, while Italy’s Yassine Rachik claimed men’s race victory in 64:26. Read more on the elite races here.

Travel tips

My trip included a flight from London to Prague, which takes less than two hours, and then an onward three-hour journey by car.

However, train travel is also popular and from Prague airport visitors can hop on the AE (Airport Express) bus for 60 CZK (around £2.10) for a 30-minute journey to hlavní nádrazí (‘the main train station’). From here, there are several types of train that can be taken, including the yellow trains of RegioJet for a journey which will take around 2.5 hours.

Once in the city, transport is provided by a network of tram and bus lines. Staying at the NH Collection Olomouc Congress, I was just a 15-minute walk from the city centre so was able to travel by foot.

Active Times is the official ground handler for RunCzech events, with hotel packages, airport transfers, tours and other activities on offer.

Win like an Egyptian!

Egyptian duo Omar Assar and Dina Meshref successfully retained their titles at the 2019 ITTF Africa Cup on Monday 5th August in Lagos, Nigeria to qualify for the Men’s and Women’s World Cups later this year.

ASSAR OVERCOMES ARUNA

The no.3 seed in the men’s event, Omar Assar (EGY) was imperious as he accounted for the host nation favourite and top seed Quadri Aruna (NGR) in the semi-final (11-6, 11-8, 3-11, 11-7, 11-3) before overcoming Ahmed Saleh (EGY) in a hard-fought final (10-12, 11-3, 11-6, 12-14, 11-3, 9-11, 11-3).

Aruna duly finished in third place after winning his play-off against Sami Kherouf (ALG) (11-6, 12-10, 11-5). The no.8 seed had lost his semi-final against no.2 seed Saleh (11-7, 11-6, 7-11, 11-4, 6-11, 11-2).

Victory for Assar ensures that he will be making his third career appearance at the ITTF Men’s World Cup, having previously qualified in 2015 (Halmstad, Sweden) and in 2017 (Liège, Belgium). The 2019 tournament will be held in Chengdu, China between 29th November – 1st December.

Omar Assar

SEVENTH HEAVEN FOR MESHREF

Dina Meshref (EGY) will be making a sensational seventh career appearance at the ITTF Women’s World Cup after she once again emerged as women’s champion at the ITTF Africa Cup.

The 25-year-old top seed defeated cousin and no.4 seed Yousra Helmy in straight games (11-9, 11-9, 11-1, 11-8) to claim the title, having overcome no.2 seed Offiong Edem (NGR) with the loss of just one game (11-5, 11-6, 9-11, 11-4, 11-8). Edem gained third place, accounting for Fadwa Garci (TUN) in five games (8-11, 11-8, 11-13, 11-7, 11-8).

Meshref, who made her Women’s World Cup debut in 2011 (Singapore) has been an ever-present since 2014 (Linz, Austria). The 2019 tournament will be held in Chengdu, China between 18th – 20th October.

Liebherr Live Series: The Highlights!

Published in Table Tennis

The Liebherr Live show was the best spot to catch the biggest moments at the Liebherr 2019 ITTF World Table Tennis Championships. We got to hear from the players, the coaches and the personalities for deeper insights at the Hungexpo venue. This made for some very interesting conversations for every single day of the event, both for the fans and the athletes themselves.

Liebherr leads live fan engagement

Starting from Day 1, we had an epic showdown with American Kanak Jha facing off against the defending champion, Ma Long. Liebherr Live gave the fans the opportunity to reach out and quiz the teenage athlete who gave Ma a mighty battle on the first day.

Simon’s secrets and Olympians panel

Speaking of revealing secrets, Frenchman Simon Gauzy took a break from the game to let people in on some of his off-the-table ‘tactics’. Some of these were particularly funny, as Simon’s girlfriend at home is sure to testify!

There was an Olympian panel in-house for Show 2, as Spain’s Galia Dvorak and Egyptian Omar Assar were invited. They were both very vocal about how tense they were, no matter how many World Championships they attend. This was well timed, given the huge upset with former world #1 Dimitrij Ovtcharov getting eliminated from the tournament.

Britt & Sharath discuss early exits

Netherlands’ Britt Eerland and Indian Sharath Kamal Achanta were very comfortable on the Liebherr Live couch as they got into talking about how much playing against China’s Liu Shiwen was a mental battle to Britt, and Sharath’s hopes for India in the future World Championships.

Dainton discusses new World Championships

The ITTF CEO Steve Dainton was then called up on Liebherr Live to speak about the reforms being implemented for the World Championships Finals from 2021 onwards and providing the fans a first-hand view of the future of table tennis.

Given that the 2021 World Championships will be in Houston, Texas – making it the first time since 1939 that the event will be hosted outside of Europe or Asia – the fans were left fiercely excited.

Batra’s childhood hero

Liebherr Live hosted India’s Manika Batra and China’s Zhu Yuling to speak more about the women’s singles’ competitive nature and just how much respect the two have for each other. Speaking from the heart at such a radiant talk show, Manika admitted to having modelled her career after China’s Ding Ning, and that she hoped to emulate her one day.

Hugo’s in awe of women’s finest

There were countless spectators who had their jaws dropped in the thriller match between Liu Shiwen and Ding Ning in Budapest – none more so than Hugo Calderano. Having just played Ma Long himself, the ‘Thrill from Brazil’ was still engrossed with the amazing battle that the Chinese duo had put up at the World Championships:

You never forget your first!

Liebherr Live had a treat for its Hungarian fans, as rising star Bence Majoros joined the fray with the 1993 World Table Tennis Championships bronze medallist, Zoran Primorac of Croatia. This was the perfect moment for Bence to speak about his first experience at the World Championships and just how many he hoped to attend in the coming years:

Euro-African duo chat about crazy stats

Egyptian Dina Meshref got into a rather excited discussion with German coach, Richard Prause, about how Ding Ning and Liu Shiwen both experienced the rare 11-0 scoreline and what exactly an athlete’s mindset would be in such a situation:

T-1 to Gold: Drama unfolds on penultimate day

A dramatic penultimate day was enjoyed by Liebherr Live guests: 2018 Star Coach of the Year, Italian Massimo Costantini and Hungarian national Tamas Lakatos. The now High Performance director discussed the potential final day upsets and what great hospitality we received in Tamas’ home country.

Shining bright with Liu Shiwen

2019 World Champion Liu Shiwen dropped by Liebherr Live to speak about her engaging conquest over the world of table tennis and joining the show later was American Lily Zhang. Discussing how it felt to actually  the trophy, Liu was still feeling surreal about the entire week.

Roaring with the Dragon

The only possible way to conclude a gold-standard show is to meet the champion himself just moments after his third time winning the World Championships. Ma Long was fittingly the final guest on Liebherr Live, and to say he was gushing with happiness is an understatement.

Calling his opponent in that epic men’s final the “” Ma was very complimentary about Mattias Falck and suggested the Swede even had the features of an “Asian player”.

What a special eight days these had been in Budapest! Join us as we rekindle the magic of the world’s best table tennis athletes in three minutes:

Rudolph Romps To Merrittville Score

THOROLD, Ontario — Erick Rudolph outfoxed local Merrittville Speedway stars Ryan Susice and Gary Lindberg to pick up his fourth Super DIRTcar Series win of the season on Monday night.

Just when the capacity crowd thought it would be a duel between two of their best drivers for the $8,000 payday, Rudolph’s No. 25r came roaring through the top of the field. Finally, Rudolph made the decisive move with five laps to go and captured the checkered flag.

Rudolph started in sixth and kept the top three in his sights all race. Before battling Lindberg, the pilot of the No. 25r’s toughest challenge was the Billy Whittaker Fast-Time Award recipient Billy Decker in his crimson red Gypsum Express No. 91. Decker had been fast all day and refused to let Rudolph get by easy.

From there, lapped traffic was the key to Rudolph tracking down the leader Gary Lindberg and second-place Ryan Susice. The No. 28t and No. 3rs may have had the right strategy for the track, but Rudolph would not be denied. He started entering turn three high and then rounding off the turn and running downhill through turn four. This allowed him to catch and run down the leaders when they reached traffic on the straightaways.

“I was a little bit better in lapped traffic and about the same speed one-on-one. It seemed like he [Gary Lindberg] needed to be in his specific lane. The local 358 Modifieds here are the best in the Northeast. It was tough out there. I don’t think I would have gotten him if it wasn’t for lapped traffic. Nevertheless, here we are in victory lane. The car was performing up to expectations,” said Rudolph.

The No. 25r team has been on an absolute hot streak as of late. For Rudolph, it comes down to the decisions they’ve been making as a team.

“We’ve been making the right decisions,” Rudolph said. “We show up at the track with the same car and we just gotta make the right decisions and wise choices. Hopefully, we can keep being smart. I’d like to thank all my fans, sponsors, and my crew here beside me. They’ve got my back no matter what and it’s nice knowing that. I’d like to thank the track for putting this race on.”

After leading a vast majority of the laps, Gary Lindberg, a surprise top-six qualifier in last year’s Billy Whittaker Cars 200, had to settle for second place.

“We had a good car for sure,” Lindberg said. “When I saw Erick [Rudolph] on that restart and I knew he was going to be fast. But then I didn’t see him after a few laps, so I thought we were good. But then I came upon those lapped cars and they were racing side by side and probably not watching the flagman either so I couldn’t get them.”

Last year’s Merrittville Speedway Super DIRTcar Series winner Ryan Susice finished third.

“We were just a little off from where we needed to be,” Suice said. “We were better on the long run and we had a caution right at the end. Congrats to Erick, he’s on fire. Gary had a hell of a run. I think it really speaks volumes about what we’ve got here in terms of competition to have two local guys up in the front.”

Chad Chevalier won the sportsman feature and Jeremy Cooper topped the four-cylinder race.
