Lucy Beecroft meets German giantkiller Katerina Tycova in World Games quarter-finals

England’s Lucy Beecroft has reached the quarter-finals of the World Games, where she will meet the unseeded German Katerina Tycova in Birmingham, Alabama.

Beecroft, seeded 5/8, had a comfortable win over Hungary’s Hannah Chukwu, winning 11-4, 11-5 in just 11 minutes, and followed that by beating Hong Kong’s Cheng Nga Ching (seeded 9/16) 12-10, 11-7 in 18 minutes.

Tycova, meanwhile, gained an impressive victory over No.3 seed Anna Serme (Czech Republic) 8-11, 14-12, 11-3 in 34 minutes and continued her excellent run of form by beating Australia’s Alex Haydon (9/16) 11-6, 11-3 in just 15 minutes.

The host nation’s Marina Stefanoni, seeded 9/16, will be hoping to spring a shock when she faces top seed Tinne Gilis of Belgium, while two French players, No.2 seed Mélissa Alves and Coline Aumard (3/4) will be up against USA’s Haley Mendez (5/8)n and Germany‘s Saskia Beinhard (9/16).

The top four men’s seeds, Gregoire Marche, Miguel Rodriguez, Raphael Kandra and Victor Crouin, all made it through to the quarter-finals without dropping a game.

There was a rare appearance by German legend Simon Rösner, who came out of retirement to compete in the tournament.

He achieved an excellent win over Hungary’s Balázs Farkas in the first round before losing a tough second-round tie against Baptiste Masotti of France, who meets Rodriguez in the last eight.

Canada’s David Baillargeon (9/16) upset the seedings by beating America’s Faraz Khan (5/8) to win through to a quarter-final clash with top seed Marche.

Several important squash gatherings took place at the World Games, with WSF CEO William Louis-Marie welcoming a delegation from Ukraine.
