British teenage endurance runners show sparkling form in our latest round-up of track results during August

ALDERSHOT FARNHAM & DISTRICT AC OPEN, Aldershot, August 18

Phoebe Gill, just 15 years old, ran a stunning 1500m of 4:14.08 which is the fastest ever in the under-17 age group in the UK, beating Jess Judd’s 4:14.21 set in 2011 and it took five seconds off of her previous PB.

Despite her fantastic time, Gill was almost half a minute down on the overall winner of her race, Michael Wilson, with the 3:41.06 performer running 3:46.95 as he was chased home by Josh Trigwell’s 3:48.06.

It came in a mixed race so would not count for any records while Judd’s run came in winning a BMC race.

The quickest time by a British under-20 age-grouper this year is 4:18.74 and Gill will still be in the under-20 ranks in 2026, so in theory could be the faster junior for five years in succession.

Her latest performance came in a season which has otherwise seen her focus on the 800m, where she has run 2:03.34 and won the English Schools title.

Elsewhere, Lucy Elliott fell just under five seconds short of Clare Elms’ UK W55 3000m record with 10:15.99 which places her third all-time in the age group.

WELSH ATHLETICS U20 INTERNATIONAL, Swansea, August 17

Corey Campbell, who two weeks earlier had smashed Barrie Moss’s 50-year-old UK under-17 3000m record, enjoyed another impressive win taking on the under-20s in this international and winning easily in 8:18.40.

Campbell’s record run (a stunning 8:09.02) had come in Jessheim in Norway as he finally beat the record (8:13.42) set at Crystal Palace in 1972 in the same meeting Dave Bedford set his still-standing national championships all-comers’ record.

The 16-year-old Scot had also set an under-17 record in May over the mile when his 4:05.77 took a second off Barrie Williams’ 4:06.7 also set in 1972, though Campbell was only 15 years old when he set this record, to Williams’ 16.

The East Lothian athlete had also finished sixth in the European Under-18 Championships 1500m in Jerusalem this summer.
