Magic's Fultz out indefinitely with fractured toe

Orlando Magic guard Markelle Fultz is out indefinitely after suffering a fractured left big toe, the team announced Sunday.

The Magic said Fultz has been placed in a walking boot but will not need surgery. The team did not disclose a timeline for Fultz's return, but the Orlando Sentinel reported that the former No. 1 overall draft selection likely will miss training camp.

Fultz, 24, suffered the injury during a preseason workout, according to the team, which said his "return to play will depend on how he responds to rehabilitation and treatment." He is the second key backcourt player to suffer an offseason injury for the Magic, who also are without Gary Harris (torn meniscus).

The 6-foot-4 Fultz missed most of the past two seasons because of a torn ACL suffered in January 2021. He missed nearly 14 months before returning to the Magic this past February and appeared in 18 games, averaging 10.8 points and 5.5 assists.

The No. 1 overall pick of the 76ers in 2017, Fultz has averaged 10.9 points and 4.8 assists in 131 career games over five injury-plagued seasons with Philadelphia and Orlando. During his time with the Sixers, Fultz was slowed by a shoulder injury that eventually was diagnosed as thoracic outlet syndrome -- a nerve problem that also affected his right arm and hand.

Fultz is entering the second season of a three-year, $50 million contract extension that he signed with the Magic in December 2020. The Magic will hold their media day on Monday and open training camp Tuesday.
