Will Sean Payton be the next Carolina Panthers head coach? Will Sean Payton be the next Carolina Panthers head coach?
The Carolina Panthers have requested permission from the New Orleans Saints to interview Sean Payton for their head coaching vacancy. But with Payton still under contract in New Orleans, hiring Payton could come with a hefty price tag in the name of draft picks. In this view, Locked On Saints host Ross Jackson joins WCNC Charlotte Sports Director Nick Carboni to discuss the possibility of Payton joining his longtime NFC South rivals in 2023. Panthers owner David Tepper hasn't spoken publicly about the team's head coaching position since Steve Wilks was named interim early in the season. Wilks replaced Matt Rhule after a 1-4 start that saw Carolina lose at home to Cleveland, Arizona and San Francisco. Wilks led the Panthers to a 6-6 record and has overwhelming support from the locker room to be the next permanent coach. However, a flat performance against the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tampa Bay kept the team out of the playoffs late in the season. Tepper said Wilks could be considered for the full-time job, but several young, offensive-minded coaches will reportedly interview with Carolina. Those coaches include Eagles OC Shane Steichen, Cowboys OC Kellen Moore and Bills OC Ken Dorsey. The team also interviewed former Lions and Colts head coach Jim Caldwell, as well as former Colts head coach Frank Reich. #Panthers #NFL READ MORE: https://www.wcnc.com/article/sports/panthers-interview-frank-reich-for-head-coaching-position/275-717976c2-175a-4ee8-a2df-7cb63fd21c9c
