South Africa 342 (Markram 115, Elgar 71, Joseph 5-81) vs West Indies

South Africa's lower order squeezed out 28 runs from 4.3 overs on the second morning to reach 342, but Alzarri Joseph got Gerald Coetzee and Anrich Nortje to register his first Test five-for and limit the damage. He finished with 5 for 81 but went for runs when he pitched the ball up on the second morning; in all five boundaries were scored among Coetzee, Marco Jansen, and Nortje, allowing the hosts to go at just over a run a ball. Nortje picked up three fours before top-edging a slog to Tagenarine Chanderpaul square on the offside to end the innings.

South Africa started the day on 314 for 8 on the back of Aiden Markram's 115 and Dean Elgar's 71. They had set up the innings with a141-run first-wicket stand. Joseph had eventually got Elgar for the first wicket, which led to Tony de Zorzi, on debut, joining Markram to put on another 80 runs, but after Joshua Da Silva effected de Zorzi's run out by palming Chanderpaul's throw onto the stumps, it was the start of a collapse of 7 for 79.

Joseph went on to trap captain Temba Bavuma lbw for a duck and castle Markram with a searing yorker to finish day one with three to his name. When Kyle Mayers got Peterson, the hosts were 290 for 7, and threatened to fall in a heap. But 52 runs were added for the last three wickets on either side of stumps.

West Indies bowled the occasional jaffa, but South Africa managed 50 fours over their innings, amounting to 58% of the total score.
