Lunch West Indies 212 and 0 for 1 need another 247 runs to beat South Africa 342 and 116 (Markram 47, Coetzee 20, Roach 5-47, Holder 2-7)
When Shannon Gabriel, who was belatedly introduced into the attack in the second innings, had Senuran Muthusamy gloving down the leg side, South Africa were 80 for 8. That they eventually passed 100 was down to a sparky cameo from debutant Gerald Coetzee (20 off 15 balls). Markram aside, No.10 Coetzee was the only South Africa batter to score more than ten in their second innings.
Roach bounced Coetzee out to help West Indies snip off South Africa's tail. After completing his 11th five-wicket haul in Test cricket - and first away from home since 2017 - a cheerful Roach was warmly welcomed back by his team-mates, Jimmy Adams, West Indies' director of cricket, and Brian Lara, the team mentor. However, the mood and tempo of the game quickly changed again when Kagiso Rabada strangled Brathwaite down the leg side just before lunch.
