New Zealand and Norway kicked off the festivities in Group A of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup. Hannah Wilkinson and Ada Hegerberg exchanged changes early, but Norway and New Zealand's backline held strong and went into halftime tied 0-0. After constantly providing Norway trouble in the first half, Wilkinson helped New Zealand strike first with a beautiful finish in the 48th minute. Wilkinson's third international goal set the New Zealand record. Frida Maanum and Norway found wonderful changes throughout the second half, but their inability to finish in the final third proved costly in their 1-0 loss against New Zealand. This was New Zealand's first-ever victory in a World Cup.
