Cricket West Indies (CWI) selectors have recalled big names
Shai Hope and
Shimron Hetmyer, along with fast bowler
Oshane Thomas, for the T20Is against India as they look for the "right combinations" ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup. They are part of the 15-man squad for the five-match series against India from August 3 to 13.
From West Indies' last T20I squad, which won 2-1 in South Africa in March, the selectors left out
Shamarh Brooks,
Raymon Reifer,
Yannic Cariah and
Sheldon Cottrell. The provisional squad, which will travel for all the matches, will be further trimmed to a squad of 13 for each game before a final XI is picked.
"The squad is selected with the next ICC Men's T20 World Cup in mind," lead selector
Desmond Haynes said in a CWI release. "We are looking at various plans as we try to find the right combinations. As we prepare, we are looking to build a unit which we believe can do the job when we host the global event in just under a year. We have some match-winners in our line-up and we will look to have the right kind of preparation, starting here in Trinidad on Thursday."
Haynes further said some other players could also "come into consideration going forward" depending on performances in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) starting on August 17.
Hetmyer last played a T20I in August last year and had returned to the ODI fold only recently, after being left out of the ODI World Cup Qualifier in June. He had earlier been out of the white-ball set-up because of form and fitness issues. Hetmyer recently played two T20s for runners-up Seattle Orcas in the inaugural Major League Cricket (MLC) in the USA and had scored
299 runs for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL this year, at a strike rate of 151.77, while averaging 37.37.
Hope, among West Indies' most prolific ODI batters in recent times, also returns after over a year, having last played a T20I in February 2022 in India. He has played only 19 T20Is while striking at 121.11 but averages only 17.88. His last T20 outing was in the PSL for winners Lahore Qalandars.
Among the returnees, Thomas' absence was the longest, having been out of the T20I set-up since December 2021. To add to that, he has not played any cricket since December 2022, when he featured in the Lanka Premier League for Kandy Falcons. He has been part of the ODI squad against India but didn't play in the first two games.
The five T20Is will be played across the Caribbean and the USA. After the series starts in Tarouba on August 3, Providence will host two games on August 6 and 8 before the teams fly to Lauderhill in Florida for the last two T20Is on August 12 and 13.
