Boult, Jamieson back in New Zealand ODI squad for England series

In a strong sign that Trent Boult will be picked for the upcoming ODI World Cup, the New Zealand selectors have included him in a squad of 15 for four ODIs in England, as they build-up towards the big-ticket tournament in October. In another boost for New Zealand's World Cup preparations, fast bowler Kyle Jamieson also returned to the ODI side after recovering from a back injury.
Boult and Jamieson last played in ODIs in 2022, in September and April respectively, and Jamieson has been out of action since February this year. He will first return to the field for the T20Is against UAE next week.
Boult has meanwhile been featuring in T20 leagues around the world. After playing for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL earlier this year, he recently turned out for MI New York in their victorious MLC campaign and was the leading wicket-taker by a distance in the league.
Tom Latham will lead the ODI side in the absence of Kane Williamson, who started batting recently and will join the side in England to train and continue his rehabilitation after his surgery. Mark Chapman and James Neesham will miss the ODIs as they await the births of their respective first children, while Ish Sodhi will return home after the T20Is in England to also miss the ODIs and spend time with his family ahead of a busy season.

As compared to the depleted ODI side which toured Pakistan in April-May when many of their players were participating in the IPL, New Zealand are back to near full strength with the return of Tim Southee, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Devon Conway, Finn Allen and Lockie Ferguson.

"We're delighted to include Kyle in this squad alongside his earlier selection for the T20 squads to play the UAE and England," coach Gary Stead said. "He's been working extremely hard on his rehabilitation following back surgery, and we're looking forward to seeing him back playing on the international stage.

"It's also great to welcome Trent back into our ODI unit as he begins his preparation towards the World Cup in India."

Allrounder Michael Bracewell, who is nursing an Achilles injury, remains unavailable for selection.

New Zealand will start the England tour with T20 warm-up games against Worcestershire and Gloucestershire on August 25 and 27 before the T20Is on August 30, September 1, 3 and 5. The ODIs will be held on September 8, 10, 13 and 15.

Southee will lead in the T20Is in the UAE that finish on August 20, and then join London Spirits in the Hundred for their last league game on August 25, and also for the finals if they qualify. Southee and Ferguson are among 11 New Zealand players to feature in the 100-ball tournament this time. Those picked for the England T20Is, which will precede the ODIs, will then join the New Zealand side for the series starting on August 30, three days after the Hundred final at Lord's.
