Exeter's Hendrickson set to leave for Japan

Exeter centre Tom Hendrickson is to leave the club to move to Japan.

The 29-year-old, who has played 87 times for the Chiefs since his debut a decade ago, is set to join Hanazono Liners in the Japanese top flight.

The New Zealand-born back grew up in Cornwall and came up through the Exeter academy system.

He was part of the Chiefs side that won the Premiership Rugby Cup final against London Irish last season and the 2018 Anglo-Welsh Cup final.

"Tom was keen to experience something outside of Devon and Cornwall, where he's played all his rugby," Exeter head coach Ali Hepher said.

"He was probably going to look for that next year, but this opportunity came up mid-season and we didn't want to stand in the way of him experiencing something life-changing.

"He goes with our best wishes, he's been in fantastic form this year and I'm sure he'll be a success over there."

Hendrickson told the club website: "After 10 years at the club, it's bittersweet to be saying goodbye.

"I've loved my time in a Chiefs shirt having grown up in Cornwall, looking up to all the great players that have pulled on the Exeter colours.

"Being a part of the Chiefs journey and some phenomenal moments has been incredibly special to me - I made memories that will last a lifetime."
