Van der Merwe signs new Edinburgh deal to 2025

Scotland wing Duhan van der Merwe says he wants to repay Edinburgh's faith in him after extending his contract to stay in the capital until June 2025.

The South Africa-born player, who has been capped 34 times by Scotland, returned to Edinburgh in October 2022 from Worcester Warriors.

Van der Merwe, 28, confirmed the new deal before this weekend's 1872 Cup decider with Glasgow Warriors.

He said he felt at home at the club with a "special group of players".

"I love playing my rugby here and it's where I'm happiest," he added. "I couldn't imagine playing anywhere else at this point in my career.

"Edinburgh has done so much for me in my career. I've always said that I want to repay the faith the club has shown in me over the years, so it was a no-brainer to sign a new deal."

The deal comes just days after fellow Scotland winger Darcy Graham signed a contract extension with Edinburgh until 2027.

Van der Merwe originally joined Edinburgh in 2017 from Montpellier, before moving to Worcester in 2021. After the English club went into administration in October 2022, he returned to Scotland's capital.

"Duhan is one of world rugby's brightest talents," said Edinburgh senior coach Sean Everitt.

"He's a big-game player and someone that we're delighted to see re-sign in Edinburgh.

"When I first spoke to him in the summer, he spoke about his pride in representing Edinburgh and how he wanted to have his biggest season yet for the club.

"We are definitely now seeing the fruits of his labour, and you only had to see his recent performance against Castres to see how devastating a runner and finisher he can be."
