Stroman, Yankees agree to deal, sources say

Right-hander Marcus Stroman and the New York Yankees are in agreement on a contract, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan on Thursday.

Stroman, who turns 33 on May 1, had a tale of two halves for the Chicago Cubs in 2023, pitching the first few months as a Cy Young contender before ineffectiveness and injuries took over. He compiled a 2.96 ERA in the first half to earn his second All-Star selection, but that ballooned to 8.63 in the second.

A hip injury gave way to a rib cartilage ailment, effectively torpedoing Stroman's season. He returned to the Cubs late in the season, pitching out of the bullpen before getting a couple of starts that didn't last long.

When Stroman's mechanics are right, his sinker is his best pitch.

The nine-year veteran is joining his fourth team after beginning his career with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2014 and spending two seasons with the New York Mets. Stroman is 77-76 over his career with a 3.65 ERA after being selected by Toronto in the first round of the 2012 draft.

ESPN's Jesse Rogers contributed to this report.
