Cummins and Hazlewood heap early pressure on West Indies

Lunch West Indies 64 for 3 (McKenzie 26*, Hodge 1*) vs Australia

Pat Cummins picked up where he left off against Pakistan by making early inroads on the opening day against an inexperienced West Indies during another immaculate spell and Josh Hazlewood strengthened Australia's position shortly before lunch.

Cummins removed both West Indies' openers, Kraigg Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul, before Hazlewood had the promising Alick Athanaze bowled when he shouldered arms. At the interval, the visitors were tottering on 64 for 3.

Cummins' first key moment of the day came when he called correctly and went against convention by bowling first on a well-grassed surface - just the second captain since 1992 to send a side in at Adelaide Oval, which this year is hosting a day Test rather than a pink-ball encounter.

On a cool, overcast morning, Australia applied early pressure against at almost static West Indies opening pair, whose early boundaries were an edge over the slips and another past the stumps, and the quicks strung together five maidens in a row.

Chanderpaul's attempts at a rare attacking stroke in Cummins' opening over gave Australia their first breakthrough when the recalled Cameron Green leapt high in the gully to add to his list of outstanding takes in that position.

Two overs later and Cummins completed a working over of Brathwaite when he straightened one off the seam to take off stump, the delivery after a rare misdirection of an attempting inswinger had produced a wild four byes down the leg side.

Athanaze and Kirk McKenzie steadied the innings for a period which included an early spell for Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Marsh being used ahead of Green. Both left-handers played some pleasing drives, but Athanaze was left to rue a significant misjudgment when Hazlewood brought one back from round the wicket for his 250th scalp in Tests.

Outside of Braithwaite, West Indies' top six has five players who have played just 11 Test between them. Their three debutants Kavem Hodge, Justin Greaves and Shamar Joseph were presented with their Test caps during the warm-up by Brian Lara, Brathwaite and Ian Bishop respectively.

As expected Australia made just one change from the side that beat Pakistan in Sydney with Green returning for his first Test since the Ashes last year in place of the retired David Warner. Green will bat at No. 4 with Steven Smith set to open for the first time in Test cricket in his 106th Test match.
