Another world mark for masters athlete Clare Elms while Joseph Tuffin wins exciting mens race in a PB of 3:59.24 at Lee Valley

AYO FALOLA DREAM MILE & OPEN, Lee Valley, London, February 7

Three runners broke four minutes for the first time in the mens elite race but the world record came in the womens elite B race.

Clare Elms, who still holds world indoor marks as a W50 (1500m) and W55 (3000m), set her first world record in the W60 category as she ran a 5:30.89 mile to take over a dozen seconds off American Lesley Hinzs 5:43.75 from 2017.

The time of AWs master athlete of the year in 2019 is also eight seconds quicker than Fiona Mathesons overall British mile record of 5:38.55 set outdoors in 2022.

A week earlier Elms had missed Mathesons world indoor W60 3000m record at Sheffield by a hundredth of a second (passing the mile bang on Hinzs time) but had bounced back with an UK W60 road record of 5:33 a few days later.

At Lee Valley, Elms was drawn in the womens B race which was won by Nicole Edmunds in 5:12.48 but the W60 runner had a race long battle for second with Isabel Forrest, who is 47 years her junior.

Clare Elms and Isabel Forrest (Mark Hookway)

Forrest, the younger sister of top under-15 cross-country runner Olivia, set a PB of 5:29.95 passing Elms on the final lap with the latter thinking she may have gone quicker but for three failed attempts to pass Forrest mid-race who surged each time to stay ahead.

Elms scored over 103 per cent on age-grading with the best of the rest being the senior men whose sub-four-minute times yielded 93 per cent.

Tyler Bilyard leads (Paul Forrest)

After excellent pacing and then a good effort from Zak Seddon through the third quarter, there was an exciting finish with Joseph Tuffin (3:59.24) just edging past Tyler Bilyard (3:59.33) and Rory Leonard (3:59.55).

Joseph Tuffin (81) (Paul Forrest)

The womens elite race was won by Shaikira King in 4:43.23 from fellow 15-year-old Olivia Forrest (4:46.55) and the pair went second and third all-time indoors in the under-17 age group.

Shaikira King (Paul Forrest)

King was ultimately frustrated, though, as she was chasing Lyla Belshaws 4:42.85 set in B0ston a few days earlier which itself broke Kings 4:50.93 from this meeting last year.

There was a record in the race, however, as Zoe Doyle, who already holds the British W40 best, moved up to the W45s and bettered Louise Rudds 5:13.36 although Doyles time of 5:09.98 was down on Lucy Elliotts W50 best of 5:03.60.

Lina Nielsen won the 400m in 52.98.
