LSU RB Holly avoids attempted murder charge

Suspended LSU running back Trey Holly won't face an attempted murder charge stemming from a February shooting in his hometown.

A grand jury rejected the charge Friday, instead charging Holly with one felony count of illegal use of a weapon or dangerous instrumentality.

Holly, 19, was arrested Feb. 15 after turning himself in and was charged with three felonies, including second-degree attempted murder. The arrest stemmed from a Feb. 9 shooting at an apartment complex in Farmerville, Louisiana, that left two people injured with gunshot wounds.

Holly intends to plead not guilty to the charge, his attorney, Michael Small, said Friday. LSU immediately suspended Holly after his arrest, and he has not been with the team during spring practice.

The Union Parish Sheriff's Office arrested Holly and two others in connection with the shooting. Holly wrote in a Feb. 17 social media post that he's "100 percent innocent" and had been "falsely identified, accused and arrested," noting that the shooting occurred where he lives.

"I turned myself in because I was notified of an arrest warrant and I wanted to fully cooperate," Holly wrote.

Holly appeared in three games for LSU last season, recording 110 rushing yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. He broke the state's high school career rushing record with 10,523 yards at Union Parish High School and was ESPN's No. 172 overall recruit in the 2023 class.
