Canadiens call up D-man who had legal issue

The Montreal Canadiens have called up Logan Mailloux from the AHL, and the league approved of the move after the defenseman was embroiled in controversy.

Mailloux was taken with the 31st pick in the 2021 draft but was then suspended indefinitely by the OHL because of an incident that took place while he was on loan to SK Lejon in Sweden in November 2020. He was fined by Swedish authorities after admitting to two charges related to sharing, without her consent, a photo of a woman during sex.

After three months, Mailloux was reinstated and has continued his climb through the minor leagues, most recently playing for the Laval Rocket where he was an All-Star.

"We have met with Logan Mailloux multiple times over the course of the last eight to 10 months," the league said in a statement. "We are comfortable that he recognizes the gravity of his prior conduct and is committed to making better and more responsible decisions in the future."

Mailloux, 21, previously said he "deeply regrets" taking and then sharing that photo with his teammates "to impress them." Mailloux underwent therapy and counseling and participated in a personal development plan.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
