Ngetich and Gebreslase enjoy Great Manchester Run wins

Olympic-bound Emile Cairess, Calli Hauger-Thackery and Rose Harvey are also in action over 10km in our latest UK-wide distance running results round-up

Vincent Ngetich scored a comfortable 10km victory at the AJ Bell Great Manchester Run on Sunday (May 26) in a personal best of 27:25 with Jack Rayner of Australia runner-up as Adel Mechaal of Spain sprinted past Bashir Abdi of Belgium for third.

The Kenyan cruised through the first half in 13:54 before injecting pace and running the second half in 13:31 as he won by 19 seconds.

It was good to run a PB today, said Ngetich, whose marathon best is a sizzling 2:03:13 from Berlin last year. After not being selected for the Olympics, I was determined to train hard to run a PB.

Racing just over a month after clocking 2:06:46 in the London Marathon, Britains Emile Cairess was back in action finishing fifth in 27:57.

Cairess said: Im just building back after London and have only done a few weeks training so wasnt expecting much today. Im injury free and healthy, which is great, though.

Gotytom Gebreslase became the first Ethiopian winner of the womens race since Tirunesh Dibaba in 2018 as she clocked 30:32 to finish half a minute clear of Britains Calli Hauger-Thackery.

Its my first time in Manchester so Im very happy to win, said Gebreslase, who is a reserve in the Ethiopian team for the Olympic marathon.

Amane Beriso, Gotytom Gebreslase, Calli Hauger-Thackery (Great Run)

Like Cairess, Hauger-Thackery has been selected for the Olympic marathon team but plans to race the half-marathon at next weeks European Championships in Rome. She said: I really like this race a lot and did it for the first time last year and I remembered the final few miles are hard.

Rose Harvey is another Olympic marathon-bound Brit and after finishing ninth in Manchester she said: This was very much the start of my training block for Paris. This 10km is not my distance. Im a marathon runner through and though but it was good to test my speed.

In the associated half-marathon, Crawleys James Westlake came out on top in 66:34, more than a minute clear of Belgian Laurens Vanderlinden. This was a personal best by nearly two minutes for the Crawley runner.

Sadly, however, organisers reported a 40-year-old man collapsed on the course and later died in hospital. The entire team involved in organising the Great Manchester Run extends their heartfelt condolences to the participants family and friends, said the organisers.
