Dodgers bring back INF Rosario in trade with Rays

The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired Amed Rosario from the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday, injecting a second super-utility player into an injury-ravaged roster in a matter of hours. Earlier Monday, the Dodgers landed Tommy Edman -- along with reliever Michael Kopech -- as part of a three-team trade involving the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago White Sox.

For Rosario, a free agent at season's end, the Dodgers sent 27-year-old minor league pitcher Michael Flynn to the Rays. Left-hander Ryan Yarbrough was designated for assignment to create room on the 40-man roster.

This marks the second straight July that the Dodgers have acquired Rosario in a trade. Rosario is a lifelong shortstop who tapped into more versatility with the Rays this season, also making starts at second base, third base and right field. The 28-year-old right-handed hitter has slashed .307/.331/.417 in 275 plate appearances this season and is expected to get playing time against left-handed pitchers.

The Dodgers expect to get Mookie Betts back relatively soon but are also without super-utility man Chris Taylor, infielder Miguel Rojas and third baseman Max Muncy. Rosario and Edman give the team additional options at shortstop, which would allow Betts to play second base, but also more coverage at third base and in the outfield. The Dodgers are still expected to chase a starting pitcher.
