Henderson's howler not good enough - Wilder

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder said his goalkeeper Dean Henderson will have to do better after gifting Premier League leaders Liverpool the only goal in their 1-0 victory at Bramall Lane on Saturday.

There seemed no obvious danger in the 70th minute when Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum shot hopefully from the edge of the area. Even though Henderson did not appear obviously unsighted, he somehow allowed the ball to spill between his hands and under his legs in an embarrassing howler that put Liverpool ahead.

The 22-year-old keeper, on loan from Manchester United, has been one of the stand-out players in his team's return to the top flight this season but Wilder was in unforgiving mood.

"If he wants to be a professional footballer, these things are going to happen," he said. "I am not going to put my arms around him, simply he needs to do better."

Henderson has been tipped for an international call-up but his howler was witnessed close up by England manager Gareth Southgate who was in the crowd.

"If he wants to play for the top teams, he wants to play for England then he needs to do better, he needs to concentrate more, it's a disappointing day for him," Wilder said.

United's manager said he was particularly disappointed that his side did not take advantage of Liverpool's off day.

"I am not bothered about pride, I am bothered about the result," Wilder said.

"Liverpool had an off day and I think we missed an opportunity. In pressurised situations we need to remain composed. We were delighted with the shape but their chances came from our mistakes.

"We have had big moments in the game but we did not take them, we had to jump all over it and we didn't. We had enough to get something out of this game but we did not take our opportunities. Points are the most important thing and we did not get points we deserved today."
