Mitchell scores 37 as Cavs stretch record to 14-0

CLEVELAND -- Donovan Mitchell scored a season-high 37 points, Darius Garland had 29 and the Cleveland Cavaliers continued one of the best starts in league history, improving to 14-0 with a 144-126 win over the Chicago Bulls on Friday night in an NBA Cup game.

The Cavs are the sixth team to go 14-0 and first since the Golden State Warriors opened 24-0 in 2015-16.

Cleveland's 14-game winning streak is the longest in the club's 55-year existence. The Cavs won 13 in a row three times when LeBron James played for them.

Jarrett Allen added 24 points and Caris LeVert had 22 for the Cavs, who have been perfect under first-year coach Kenny Atkinson. Their 144 points is tied for their fifth most in a game in franchise history, according to ESPN Research.

"We just have this incredible chemistry, incredible understanding of each other... and respect for each other," Atkinson said. "It's beautiful, beautiful to watch."

Coby White scored 29 and Nikola Vucevic contributed 25 for the Bulls, who were still within four points on Ayo Dosunmu's dunk with 2:55 left. However, LeVert and Mitchell dropped 3-pointers as the Cavs blitzed the Bulls 21-7 the rest of the way.

Cleveland was on fire to open the game, going 19-for-22 from the field in the first quarter to build a 49-34 lead. Garland scored 15 points over the first 12 minutes of action.

The 49 points were the most the Cavaliers have scored in a quarter in franchise history.

A triple from Mitchell extended the Cleveland lead to 19 at 57-38 with 10:16 left in the second quarter, but Chicago didn't get discouraged. It put together a monster 27-12 run, pulling within 69-65 with 2:39 to go in the first half.

However, Garland and Allen each converted a three-point play to help the Cavaliers stay in front, and Cleveland took a 77-73 advantage into the break.

"When you have this much depth it's fun," Atkinson said. "Even at the end there, Georges (Niang) was playing well but I think we need a little more defense... oh we got Dean Wade over there! It's almost like an embarrassment of riches."

The Cavs played without starting forward Evan Mobley, who has been battling an illness the past few days.

The Associated Press and Field Level Media contributed to this report.
