ST. CATHARINES, Ontario – Canadian stock car driver Fred Carleton Sr. passed away on March 17 at the age of 80.

Carleton began racing in Merrittville Speedway’s Jalopy division in 1961 and later enjoyed successful runs in late models and modifieds at Humberstone, Ransomville, Merrittville and Speedway Park.

He retired from racing in 1975 and his sons Fred Jr. and Luke took up the reins, racing in the 358 modified and sportsman classes. Fred Sr. was inducted into Merrittville’s Wall of Fame in 2016.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Melodie, children Kim, Fred Jr., Luke, Sandy and Jill, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
