German PG Hayes entering NBA draft, 'excited'

Point guard Killian Hayes, the No. 10 prospect in the ESPN Top 100 who plays in Germany, has submitted paperwork to the league office to make himself eligible for the 2020 NBA draft, he told ESPN on Friday.

"I am officially declaring for the NBA draft," Hayes wrote via email. "I have sent in paperwork to the league office and I'm very excited."

Hayes is averaging 12.0 points and 5.6 assists per game for Ratiopharm Ulm. He has shot 59% from inside the arc in the Bundesliga and EuroCup.

The 6-foot-5 playmaker was identified early in his career as a top international prospect, winning MVP honors as France won the gold medal at the U16 European Championship in 2017. He also was named MVP of the French U18 league and Jordan Brand Classic international game in New York.

Hayes had a standout performance at the FIBA U17 World Cup in the summer of 2018, being named to the all-tournament team after guiding France to the championship game, where it lost to the U.S.

The son of former Penn State basketball standout Deron Hayes, Killian Hayes was born in Lakeland, Florida, but grew up in France. He elected to leave this past summer for Germany, where he's improved his standing in the eyes of NBA scouts while playing an outsized role for Ulm.

With the German league suspended since March 8 because of the coronavirus pandemic, Hayes is currently with his family in Lakeland.

"Since the German league got suspended, my family and I decided to come back to the U.S." Hayes wrote. "I trained at home at first, but my trainers have found a private gym that we can use so I've been working on my game out there. Right now everything is uncertain. I was supposed to have my pre-draft training in Chicago with Will Bynum, but with everything that's going on and the German league willing to resume the season [at the end of April], everything is blurry at the moment.

"We'll have to wait and see what happens. I'm still very excited for the pre-draft because I will be able to showcase how I improved on my game and everything I added to it. These are tough times, but we'll get through it. I pray for the safety of everybody."
