The 149th Open Championship, scheduled for July 16-19, was canceled Monday because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The R&A confirmed the decision and said the tournament, which was to be played at Royal St. George's in Sandwich, England, will take place at that location in 2021. Further details were to be released.

"I can assure everyone that we explored every option for playing The Open this year but it is not going to be possible," R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers said.

That means the 150th Open celebration for the Old Course in St. Andrews, Scotland, will move to 2022. Royal Liverpool, in Hoylake, England, was scheduled for 2022 but will move to another year.

The Open joins a long list of sporting events and golf tournaments that have been postponed or canceled.

The PGA Championship, originally scheduled for May 14-17, is moving to Aug. 6-9 at Harding Park in San Francisco. The U.S. Open, originally scheduled for June 16-19 at Winged Foot in Mamaroneck, New York, is moving to Sept. 17-20, one week prior to the Ryder Cup. The Masters, which was supposed to take place this week at Augusta National, is moving to Nov. 12-15.

The Ryder Cup, at Whistling Straits in Haven, Wisconsin, will remain in its original date, Sept. 25-27.
