Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-Min will complete mandatory military service in South Korea this month with the Premier League suspended indefinitely due to the global coronavirus pandemic.

Spurs announced on Monday that the 27-year-old will complete his national service after initially receiving exemption as part of the national side that won gold at the 2018 Asian Games.

They also confirmed he will return to London in May.

A statement added that Son is nearing a full recovery after he underwent surgery for an arm injury that he sustained in the early stages of a 3-2 win over Aston Villa in February, a game in which he scored two goals, including the dramatic last-gasp winner.

Son won gold with South Korea at the Asian Games in 2018, earning him exemption from military service. He participated as an over-age player in the Under-23 tournament meaning he avoided a mandatory 21-month military service.

The Premier League has been suspended indefinitely after provisional plans to resume competitive fixtures at the beginning of May were abandoned last week. Organisers said that the league will only continue "when it is safe and appropriate to do so."
