Race Fans Can Return To Tracks In Iowa On June 1

KNOXVILLE, Iowa — Race fans at Knoxville Raceway and other tracks in the state of Iowa are finally going to get to enjoy some local racing beginning June 1.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds announced on Tuesday that race tracks in the state of Iowa would be allowed to return to operation with fans in the stands beginning June 1. Knoxville Raceway has already announced plans to hold its postponed season opener on June 6.

Race tracks, as well as other venues such as casinos, in the state will be required to limit capacity to 50 percent. Public health measures must be implemented to help slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus, which has kept the racing world at a standstill for more than two months.

Knoxville Raceway officials had stated previously that the track would not host weekly competition without fans in the stands.

The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series hosted an event at the historic half-mile oval at the Marion County Fairgrounds on May 8 without fans in attendance. That event followed strict social-distancing guidelines and was streamed online.

Hot laps for Knoxville’s opener on June 6 will begin at 6:45 p.m., local time. Adult tickets are $15; Teens are $10; Children 12 and under are free.

Open practice sessions will be held on Thursday, June 4 and Friday, June 5. Start time will be announced soon. The grandstands will be open and admission is free for spectators. All guests must follow all social distancing guidelines throughout practice nights.

Additional sanitizer and hand washing stations have been added under the grandstands and in the infield at Knoxville. Masks are highly recommended for all spectators. Plexi glass dividers have been installed at all points of purchase. High-contact areas will be continuously cleaned throughout race nights.
