Shaw named as coach of G League prospect team

Longtime NBA player Brian Shaw has been named the head coach of the new G League team that will include prospects Jalen Green and Isaiah Todd and will debut in the 2020-21 season.

NBA G League president Shareef Abdur-Rahim touted Shaw's experience as both a player (he won three NBA titles in 14 seasons) and as a coach (he was a longtime Lakers assistant before serving as head coach of the Nuggets from 2013-15) in announcing the hire.

"Brian's extensive experience and success as an NBA player and coach make him a natural choice to lead the new NBA G League team," Abdur-Rahim said. "We look forward to watching these terrific young players develop their skills and grow as professionals under Brian's leadership."

Green, ESPN's No. 1-rated high school prospect, announced in April that he would bypass college and join the G League's new pathway program, which will provide one-year development outside of the minor league's traditional team structure. Others have followed, like Todd, ESPN's No. 13-ranked player in the 2020 class, and Daishen Nix, who decommitted from UCLA to join.

The new G League team won't be affiliated with any existing G League or NBA team.

"I'm excited to serve as head coach of the new NBA G League team," Shaw said. "This is a new and different challenge in my career, and I'm ready to get to work mentoring, coaching and developing the next generation of NBA stars."
