JEREZ DE LA FRONTERA, Spain – Fabio Quartararo put together a stunning lap to claim the pole for the opening round of the MotoGP season on Saturday at Circuito de Jerez-Ángel Nieto.
Quartararo rode his Petronas Yamaha SRT entry to a lap record time of 1:36.705 to earn the pole in impressive fashion ahead of the Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP entry of Maverick Vinales.
Marc Marquez, who had the fastest time during practice on Friday, qualified third aboard his Repsol Honda entry.
Francesco Bagnaia was impressive aboard the Pramac Racing Ducati, putting down the fourth fastest lap to place himself at the front of the second row. His teammate, Jack Miller, qualified fifth ahead of LCR Honda’s Cal Crutchlow in sixth.
Red Bull KTM’s Pol Espargaro, Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso and Suzuki’s Alex Rins filled the third row, through Rins crashed late in Q2 and was later taken to a local hospital for further tests on his right shoulder. It’s unknown if Rins will be able to participate in Sunday’s race.
Petronas Yamaha SRT’s Franco Morbidelli, Monster Energy Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi and Suzuki’s Joan Mir will start 10th through 12th, respectively.
