After having evaluated the situation and, in particular considered the table tennis community, USD 30,000 has been offered for projects to reactivate table tennis, using the sport for positive social outcomes.
“We know that we can’t stop the crisis by sending money, but we are convinced that table tennis can help at a second stage. As we did in other occasions in the past, our sport is able to reknit social networks and help alleviating traumas. We feel sympathy for our Lebanese ITTF family member and commit to do whatever is in our hands to support where possible.” Thomas Weikert, ITTF & ITTF Foundation President
Invited to the extraordinary board meeting in his position as the President of the Arab Table Tennis Union, Mr. Khalil Al-Mohannadi, ITTF Deputy President, is pleased with regards to the support:
“I feel for our Lebanese brothers and sisters. Nowadays and after having been hit severely by the COVID-19 pandemic, it is more than ever important to stay united in these difficult times. I am gratified to see that the ITTF Foundation has established this quick reaction to a human crisis with its Emergency Relief Fund. The ITTF can now quickly help when needed.” Khalil Al-Mohannadi, ITTF Deputy President
Her Royal Highness Princess Zeina Rashid of Jordan was co-opted in the same extraordinary meeting as the new ITTF Foundation Governing Board member.
“The tragedy that has befallen our region’s beloved Beirut and Lebanon’s resolute and determined people has shocked us all. I am humbled and proud to be part of an institution that has responded swiftly to provide much needed aid at this difficult time. I hope that the ITTF Foundation’s prompt action will encourage other like-minded and compassionate organizations to follow this example.” Royal Highness Princess Zeina Rashid of Jordan
The funding emanates from the donations received for the #TableTennisUnited Fundraising Campaign, the grant panel approved an exceptional use as incoming donations are significantly higher than the applications received.
