Ryan Crouser throws superb shot put series in Des Moines – weekly round-up

Olympic champion goes beyond 22 metres in all six rounds at the Drake Blue Oval Showcase, while Ivona Dadic sets a heptathlon world lead in Götzis

A round-up of some of the latest performances from across the globe.

Drake Blue Oval Showcase, Des Moines, USA, August 29

Olympic champion Ryan Crouser’s shot put series included an impressive six throws over 22 metres.

The American’s first throw was 22.27m and his best of 22.72m came in round two. He followed that up with throws of 22.70m, 22.63m, 22.68m and 22.44m.

As noted by World Athletics, the only other athlete to have achieved the feat is Italy’s Alessandro Andrei, who recorded his six 22-metre throws in 1987.

The USA’s Josephus Lyles clocked 20.32 (+1.8 m/sec) to win the 200m, with Britain’s European 400m champion Matthew Hudson-Smith third in that race in 20.95.

British record-holder Tiffany Porter went quickest in the 100m hurdles with 12.90 (+0.9 m/s) as her sister Cindy Ofili was fourth in that heat in 13.22.

The USA’s Lynna Irby won the 200m in a wind-assisted 22.52 (+3.7m/s), while world indoor champion Sandi Morris won the pole vault with 4.65m.

Austrian Combined Events Championships, Götzis, August 29-30

Ivona Dadic won the heptathlon title with a world-leading score of 6419 points, despite cool and wet conditions.

She clocked 13.57 in the 100m hurdles and followed that with 1.78m in the high jump, 14.58m in the shot put, 24.21 in the 200m, 6.25m in the long jump, 47.93m in the javelin and an 800m of 2:15.57.

Göteborg Friidrott Grand Prix, Sweden, August 29

Britain’s Daniel Rowden was among the winners as he ran a PB of 1:44.74 in the 800m.

The USA’s world silver medallist Raevyn Rogers won the women’s race in 2:01.24 ahead of Britain’s 18-year-old Keely Hodgkinson who set an outdoor PB of 2:01.78.

Australia’s Stewart McSweyn, Sweden’s Thobias Montler and Britain’s Amy Hunt and Melissa Courtney-Bryant also secured success.

British Milers’ Club Lee Valley Gold Standard, London, August 29

British 800m internationals Adelle Tracey and Elliot Giles stepped up to race over 1500m and won the A races in 4:12.62 and a stadium record of 3:41.29 respectively.

Irish Life Health National Senior & U23 Championships, Dublin, August 29

Callum Wilkinson broke the British 10,000m race walk record with a time of 39:52.05 to win the Irish title.

Sean Tobin won the 10,000m after claiming 1500m silver, clocking 29:35.14.

Phil Healy took the women’s 200m title in 23.57 after winning the 100m the weekend before.

Italian Championships, Padova, August 29-30

European under-23 silver medallist Leonardo Fabbri threw a European leading 21.99m in the shot put.

Gianmarco Tamberi won the high jump with a clearance of 2.28m, while 18-year-old Larissa Iapichino won the long jump with 6.32m.

Lamont Marcell Jacobs won the 100m title in a wind-assisted 10.10 (+3.3m/s), while Luminosa Bogliolo won the 100m hurdles in 13.02.

Polish Championships, Wloclawek, August 28-30

World and Olympic hammer bronze medallist Wojciech Nowicki won with a throw of 80.28m, with Pawel Fajdek second with 78.61m.

Justyna Swiety-Ersetic won the 400m in 51.44, while Michal Rozmys won the 1500m ahead of Marcin Lewandowski – 3:53.09 to 3:54.13.

Bartlomiej Stoj won the discus ahead of Robert Urbanek and Piotr Malachowski, throwing 63.05m.

Michal Haratyk took the shot title with 20.64m.

Ukrainian Championships, August 29-30

Alina Shukh won the heptathlon with 6215 points ahead of Hanna Kasyanova with 5962 points.

Oleksiy Kasyanov won the decathlon title with 7716 points.

The men’s high jump was won by Andriy Protsenko with a clearance of 2.30m.

Trafford Open Meeting, Manchester, August 29

GB discus internationals Jade Lally and Kirsty Law fought out a close tussle on a slightly chilly afternoon at Trafford, Stephen Green Reports.

2018 European Champs finalist Lally just had the edge over Law, with both recording decent distances of 57.86m and 57.24m, respectively.

British indoor 400m champion James Williams competed over the shorter sprints and despite the less than favourable conditions the Liverpool Harrier produced a strong 10.56 over 100m, and later returned a season’s best of 21.20 in the 200m over a second clear of Zachary Price.

Trafford U20 Adam Mohamed impressed with a 22.36 win in the second heat. England Athletics U17 champion Success Eduan swept to a 11.83 100m win, edging out Trinity Powell (11.99).

Birchfield’s Heather Paton (PB of 13.22) looked smooth hurdling to a season’s best of 13.57 over the 100m distance, clear of Abi Pawlett (14.04).

The standout performance in the age-groups came in the 400m hurdles where U17 Ben Verbickas (56.21) edged Oliver Adnitt (57.03) with Louis Morrison also going sub-60, after returning 13.92 in the 100m hurdles earlier in the day. Nessa Millet stopped the clock at 59.39 in the women’s long hurdles.

East Lancs Pendle Fell Race, August 28

Alex Mason and Lorraine Slater, both of Barlick Fell Runners, clocked 47:54.3 and 58:58.3 respectively to win the evening 5.1-mile, 1526ft fell race.

Severn Bridge 10km Time Trial, Gloucestershire, August 30

This year, this ARC-licenced event was run as a time trial and Cardiff’s Lloyd Shepherd ran out fastest with a 32:28 split, Martin Duff reports.

Women’s section quickest Becki Timmings found the format very much to her liking with a personal best 37:09.

Guernsey T&F Meet 6, August 30

Tom Brierley (pictured below) and Sofia Mella were among the winners as they set PBs in the discus and triple jump respectively.

Brierley added almost 2.5m to his previous best with a mark of 35.41m, while Mella jumped 10.77m.

Josh Allaway clocked a wind-assisted 10.89 and a legal 10.90, while Abi Galpin ran a windy 12.13 and a wind-legal 12.27 in the mixed 100m events.
