Logue Counts To Three In Boone Sportmod Action

BOONE, Iowa – Sunday was a big day for Logansport, Iowa’s Johnathon Logue during the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s.

Logue started his Sunday by winning the Northern sportmod Race of Champions at Boone Speedway. A few hours later he followed it up by scoring a dominant victory in the Northern sportmod Super Nationals championship feature.

The victory makes Logue, who entered Sunday’s finale as the defending Super Nationals Northern sportmod champion, the only three-time Super Nationals champion in the Northern sportmod division.

“This race car is just phenomenal. I don’t know how we could have made it any better,” Logue said. “This car is just so good.”

Logue started in the middle of the front row for the three-wide start. It was outside front row starter Brett Berry who led the field into turn one, with Logue giving chase in second.

Berry found his line around the top of the track while Logue stuck to the bottom through the corners. After watching Berry lead the first three laps Logue got alongside him on the fourth circuit and just edged him at the start/finish line to take the race lead.

Moments later the first caution of the race waved for three cars around in the fourth corner. Logue remained stedfast on the restart, quickly pulling away from the battle for second that saw polesitter Cody Thompson take the position on the restart.

Another caution waved with 11 complete for two cars around in turns three and four. Things stayed the same on the restart, with Logue holding the lead until another caution for cars spun in turns three and four.

Nothing changed on the next restart, but after they field completed one lap a chain reaction incident in turns three and four resulted in 29th-place starter Adam Birck ending up on his roof. Birck was not hurt, but the red flag waved while officials cleaned up the mess.

Logue returned to the point on the restart and despite one more caution flag with 12 laps complete, he was never seriously challenged the rest of the way en route to the $3,000 victory.

In addition to becoming the only three-time Super Nationals Northern sportmod champion, Logue is only the second driver to win the Race of Champions and Super Nationals championship feature on the same day. Doug Smith previously did it in 2016.

“I’m just in awe. This thing is phenomenal top to bottom,” Logue said of his race car. “Man, I don’t even know what to say. I’m kind of choked up. My guys and I, we’ve been working so hard all year. Man, thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Thompson finished second, followed by Tony Olson, Logan Anderson and Berry.

The finish:

Johnathon Logue, Cody Thompson, Tony Olson, Logan Anderson, Brett Berry, Brayton Carter, Alec Fett, Garrett Nelson, Brent Curran, Austin Schrage, Tim Stallbaumer, Colton Nelson, Ty Rogers, Colby Fett, Josh Sink, Travis Burger, Brian Baker, Jason Roth, Trevor Baker, Tyler Watts, Ben Stockton, Steve Clancy, Ben Chapman, Doug Smith, Adam Birck, Tim Eaton, Doug Cook, Tyler Inman, Charlie Stevens.
