LE MANS, France – Danilo Petrucci escaped the France’s Bugatti Circuit with a victory during Sunday’s MotoGP SHARK Helmets Grand Prix de France.

The race was held under wet conditions, with the Ducati rider outrunning reigning Moto2 champion Alex Marquez of Repsol Honda by 1.2 seconds to take the victory. Marquez, the younger brother of MotoGP kingpin Marc Marquez, came from 18th to finish second.

The rain started just before the planned start time, leading to officials to delay the start before declaring the event a rain race.

Pramac Racing’s Jack Miller shot into the lead at the start and he was soon joined at the front by the Ducati pair of Petrucci and Andrea Dovizioso. Petrucci soon moved to the front, with Dovizioso slipping by Miller shortly thereafter for second.

Petrucci would lead for the most of the race, though at one point in the final 10 laps Dovizioso was able to briefly slip past his teammate for the lead. Petrucci made sure it was brief as he managed to get right back by Dovizioso to regain the lead.

Miller soon fell out of contention with a mechanical issue. Moments later Alex Rins and Cal Crutchlow both crashed, leaving Petrucci alone at the front as the other riders behind him got smaller in his mirror.

Dovizioso had faded to more than two seconds behind Petrucci, with a fast closing Alex Marquez suddenly all over him. With three laps left Marquez got around Petrucci, but he was unable to track down Petrucci for the race lead.

Petrucci took his second MotoGP victory, with Marquez finishing 1.2 seconds back. Pol Espargaro was able to charge to third at the checkered flag, with Dovizioso fading to fourth at the finish. Johann Zarco completed the top-five.

Fabio Quartararo started from the pole, but finished Sunday’s race in ninth. He now holds a 10-point advantage in the MotoGP standings over Joan Mir, who finished two positions behind him in 11th.

Dovizioso sits third in the standings, 18 points behind Quatararo. Maverick Vinales, who finished 10th Sunday, is 19 points behind Quaratarao.
