Tommy Hughes runs 2:30 to break M60 marathon record – weekly round-up

Olympian takes six minutes off previous over-60 mark in Northern Ireland

We take a look at some of the recent highlights from the world of athletics.

Down Royal Marathon, Northern Ireland, October 25

Tommy Hughes broke the world masters M60 marathon record when he won the race outright in 2:30:02 to take six minutes off the previous record mark of 2:36:30 set by Japan’s Yoshihisa Hosaka at the Beppu Marathon in 2009.

In windy conditions, he won from Colin Heron.

Hughes also set an M60 world best of 71:09 at the Antrim Coast Half Marathon (pictured) last month.

Dudince, Slovakia, October 24

Slovakia’s Olympic champion Matej Toth set a world lead with 3:41:15 in his first completed 50km race walk since Berlin 2018 which meant he got his first 3:50 Tokyo qualifying time.

Ireland’s Alex Wright (3:56:17) finished fifth but Britain’s Cameron Corbishley dropped out after a very promising first half as he too targeted the Olympic qualifier.

East Surrey Cross Country League, Croydon, October 24

This England Athletics test event saw a return to league cross-country with runners setting off in groups of 10 at three minute intervals at a wet and muddy Lloyd Park.

Dominic Nolan (16:42) and Steph McCall (19:09) were the individual senior winners as Hercules Wimbledon’s men and Herne Hill’s women took the honours.

Cap 10 Fell Race, Seaport, Bridport, Dorset, October 25

In a rare Southern coast fell race (over 10 miles), there were wins for Christian Green (71:07) and 63 year-old Eleanor Wood (1:41:09).

LMCC 10km, Long Marston, Bedfordshire, October 25

Jordan Clay, the Cornish 5000m champion, won by nearly two minutes in 33:28.

Sarah Fountain was first woman.

Exmouth 5, October 20

Tom Merson (24:35) narrowly defeated National youth runner-up Flynn Jennings, who ran one of the quickest ever times by a 17-year-old with 24:39.

Sakura, Japan, October 25

Koki Ikeda set an Asian record for the 5000m walk with 18:20.14 and this moves him to fourth all-time.

Tomohiro Noda was six seconds back and moved to sixth all-time with the fastest ever non winning performance.

Dave MacDonald Haltemprice 10km, October 25

There were wins for Kris Lecher (31:50) and Tegan Roberts (40:01).

Dorney Lake Half Marathon, 10km & 5km, October 25

Women’s winner Rose Harvey finished third in the half-marathon overall in a PB of 75:03.
