ST. LOUIS, Mo. – VOLT Racing with Archangel has confirmed an expansion into the IMSA Prototype Challenge.
The full season Ligier JS P320 will sport familiar VOLT Lighting colors, with Alan Brynjolfsson slated for driving duties.
The IMSA Prototype Challenge will feature a two-class format in 2021, with new specification LMP3 cars, like the VOLT Lighting Ligier JS P320 competing in Prototype 1 and older specification LMP3 machines competing in Prototype 2. The season will feature six, one hour, forty-five minute rounds, running in conjunction with the IMSA WeatherTech Championship calendar
This marks the third program component for the St. Louis based team, following the news of their return to GT Daytona competition as Magnus with Archangel and the continuation of their IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge program with Brynjolfsson. Archangel Motorsports Principal Mike Johnson is eager to cut back into familiar territory and capitalize on what will be the team’s busiest year yet.
“I’m excited to get back to our roots with prototype racing and to see Alan continue to develop as a driver,” said Johnson. “The Ligier JS P320 is new to all of us, but Archangel Motorsports has had some success racing prototypes in the past and we’ve proven to be a strong combination with Alan so I like our chances heading into this new challenge.”
Brynjolfsson, who has spent the last four seasons competing in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge, has a wide range of success racing various types of GT4 machinery. The common denominator in all of his experience, however, has been his proven ability to adapt. The Tampa native is prepared to face a new challenge as he makes his debut into prototype racing.
“LMP3 is brand new to me,” said Brynjolfsson. “I love the idea of a new challenge and as of now have a lot to learn, but I’m working hard to do so. I’m fortunate to have a very experienced team behind me. Mike has won races like Le Mans and the 24 Hours of Daytona in prototypes many times, so I’m going to try to learn as much as I can from them. I’m glad we kept this whole team together; it’s going to be a busy and exciting year.”
