DELMAR, Del. — The storied history of the Diamond State 50 will get another chapter when the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series modifieds visits Delaware Int’l Speedway April 27.
Since 2015, the SSTS has hosted the Diamond State 50 at the half-mile clay oval located on the First State side of the Delaware-Maryland border. The race began in 1999 as a modified versus super late model event, and in 2002, the format changed with separate features for each. After 2005, the event laid dormant until SSTS brought it back in 2015 for just modifieds.
Last year’s event took place in August, and saw all-time SSTS winningest driver Stewart Friesen capture his second Diamond State 50 victory. Friesen was able to outgun Matt Sheppard, a two-time winner.
This year’s event will pay $5000-to-win and $400 to start. In addition to the modifieds, Crate 602 sportsman, vintage stock cars and super trucks will also be on the card.
