DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Dick Mann, a two-time winner of the AMA Grand National championship, died Monday. He was 87 years old.

Mann, from Salt Lake City, Utah, captured his first AMA Grand National championship in 1963 while riding for British manufacturer Matchless. he claimed his second championship eight years later while riding for another British marquee, BSA.

His success wasn’t limited to flat-track racing, with Mann capturing the Daytona 200 road course event in consecutive seasons in 1970 and ’71. His 1970 victory was the first for Honda in AMA competition.

Mann has the unique distinction of becoming the first motorcycle competitor to earn a career Grand Slam by winning in Grand National competition on a mile, half-mile, TT and on a road racing circuit.

He retired from competition in 1974, but returned to race in the International Six Days Enduro and the Isle of Man TT in 1975. He continued to compete in vintage racing events in the 1990s.

He was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 1993 and the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1998.
