Nervous but Feng Panfeng justifies status

A comprehensive performance for a player in search of his fourth consecutive gold medal in the event.

However, many a fine player will tell you that the first match in a tournament can prove a most testing exercise; it does not matter whether you are Olympic champion, World champion or making your first venture on the global scene.

“This is my fourth time participating in the Paralympic Games. Beijing 2008 was my first. Nonetheless, I still felt pretty nervous; this is a major sporting event after all. Now, I’m feeling slightly better after my first match.” Feng Panfeng

Now 31 years old, Feng Panfeng is one of the most experienced in the Chinese squad in Tokyo; the appetite for success and relishing the occasion of a Paralympic Games is as strong as ever.

“I’d say I’m one of the most experienced, for a few of them, this is also their fourth Paralympic Games.” Feng Panfeng

The fact that he has played in Beijing, London and Rio de Janeiro means he is well suited to pass comment on the Olympic Village and stadium in Tokyo.

“Everyone is really nice. The lighting and colour scheme in the arena create a very exciting atmosphere, making one feel like competing. Our residence at the Olympic Village is pretty nice too. We have to socially distance ourselves at the dining area because of Covid-19; that’s a really good safety measure.” Feng Panfeng

Clearly, Feng Penfeng feels very much at home in the Metropolitan Gymnasium;  determined to add to his gold medal tally.

“I’ve won five gold medals in the past three Games. My goal this time is to play my best, play true to my ability and leave no regrets. I felt pretty good in the match I just played. It has been two years since I last participated in an international competition, so I felt a little nervous at first, but slowly, I managed to get into the right state of mind and put up a good performance.” Feng Panfeng

The right state of mind, most certainly and ominous for potential rivals.
