US Open 2021: Jamie Murray sets up doubles final against Joe Salisbury

British duo Joe Salisbury and Jamie Murray will go head-to-head in the final of the men's doubles at the US Open after both progressed on Thursday.

Salisbury and American partner Rajeev Ram beat US pair Sam Querrey and Steve Johnson 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 in the first semi-final in Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Murray and Brazilian Bruno Soares then ousted Australian John Peers and Slovak Filip Polasek 6-3 3-6 6-4 to join them.

"We are super-happy to win," said 35-year-old Murray at Flushing Meadows.

"It's an amazing opportunity to play in a Grand Slam final again - that's for us what tennis is about and we can't wait."

Murray and Soares won both the Australian Open and US Open together in 2016, but Murray has partnered fellow Briton Neal Skupski in the past two tournaments in New York.

Having reunited with Soares, the pair did not have much training time before this Grand Slam after the Brazilian came down with appendicitis, missing the Olympics in Japan to have his appendix removed.

"The less he practises the better he plays," joked Murray afterwards.

"It has been such a stop-start year for us - this is why we came back together, to win big tournaments. The opportunity to play in a Grand Slam final again is so exciting."

The pair say they will now prepare for Friday's final by playing football with Soares' son Noah.

Earlier, London-born Salisbury and home hopeful Ram had to come through a tie-break to take the first set, before closing out the second set - and the match - in convincing fashion.

"It's really exciting," said Salisbury, who claimed his first Grand Slam doubles title with 37-year-old Ram at the 2020 Australian Open, before finishing runners-up this year.

"We are going to do everything we can to prepare. I don't know what that is going to look like, but we are just looking forward to it."

Salisbury and Ram booked their place in the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows in thrilling fashion with a 7-6 (9-7) 6-7 (6-8) 7-6 (12-10) over Australians Max Purcell and Matthew Ebden.

"That was a pretty crazy match," Salisbury said. "We had a day off yesterday, so were able to refocus and get ready. I'm really happy with the way we played."

Salisbury is also into the last four of the mixed doubles with American partner Desirae Krawczyk.
