ITTF Group Kick-Starts 2022 with WTT Events in Germany

The ITTF Group is looking forward to a positive year of table tennis activity after delivering a suite of successful events in challenging pandemic circumstances through 2021.

Its commercial and events platform World Table Tennis (WTT) plans to host even more events in 2022, bringing its pyramid structure to life. All tiers have events scheduled next year, establishing a clear journey from Day 1 to World #1 for players.

This year, that journey will start in Germany with two events organised by WTT in collaboration with the German Table Tennis Federation (DTTB) and hosted by the Borussia Düsseldorf Club:

  • WTT Feeder Düsseldorf I, from 12 to 15 January 2022
  • WTT Feeder Düsseldorf II, from 18 to 20 January 2022

For each event, WTT will be offering USD 20,000 in prize money. They will feature all Singles and Doubles competitions.

“I would like to extend my gratitude to DTTB and the team at Borussia Düsseldorf,” said Jonny Cowan, WTT Europe General Manager. “The WTT Feeder Series was inaugurated in Düsseldorf in the same venue in December last year, and whilst there were impacts from the ongoing pandemic, was still a successful event. It is exciting to come back to start the new year in Düsseldorf, to build on the event in December, and to provide opportunities for our players to be back competing internationally again, and at the beginning of a calendar year.”

The newly elected President of the DTTB Claudia Herweg will be in attendance. “We are delighted to host the first WTT events of the year,” she said. “These events mark the restart of a close cooperation between the DTTB and WTT. We will work together to ensure their successful delivery. The Feeder Series provides a valuable opportunity for Member Associations to host events and assist the transition of their players to elite levels. ”

The Feeder Series is an essential part of WTT’s pyramid of events, as a tier designed for elevating grassroots talent to become global stars. It is designed to ensure that young players showing high potential, but still maturing, can continue their international table tennis journey. The WTT Feeder Series also provides a ‘safety net’ for players formerly of the upper echelons who fall out of form, return from career breaks, or recover from injury.

Other WTT Feeder events are already confirmed for 2022 and the first WTT Youth Series events of the year will take place in February.
