WOBURN, England – Lizette Salas played brilliantly Sunday trying to win her first major championship, but she left with the sting of losing the AIG Women’s British Open after a missed opportunity in the end.

With Salas playing so confidently through nearly the entire round, it didn’t seem fair she lipped out a 5-footer for birdie at the 18th hole, a chance that would have put her one shot ahead of Japan’s Hinako Shibuno, who was playing behind her.

Instead, Salas watched Shibuno hole an 18-foot birdie at the last to beat her by a shot.

“Obviously, I could have finished a little better, and it stings a little bit,” Salas said. “But I've just been working so hard this entire year. I'm so proud of my team.”

Salas said that included her caddie, Patrick Smith.

Four shots down at day’s start, Salas became the player to beat with her sizzling play. When she holed a 20-foot putt at the 15th, her eighth birdie of the day, she seized a one-shot lead.

Even at the last, Salas confidently carved a terrific approach, leaving her that final birdie chance.

“I told myself, 'You’ve got this. You're made for this,’” Salas said. “I'm not going to lie. I was nervous. I haven't been in that position in a long time, but I gave it a good stroke. I controlled all my thoughts. It just didn't drop.

“So congrats to our winner.”

Salas didn’t blink playing alongside Rolex world No. 1 Jin Young Ko, who was trying to win her third major championship this year. In fact, Salas put up a 65 to Ko’s 66.

“To pull off a 65 on a Sunday at a major like this, it's pretty awesome,” she said. “Pretty proud of myself.”

And encouraged by what she can do in the future.

“This is all great momentum going into Solheim,” she said. “This is great for my confidence. I just turned 30 a couple weeks ago, and I feel like I'm kind of reborn. I'm just happy to be in this position.”

GREENSBORO, N.C. – J.T. Poston pitched a perfect game en route to a breakthrough victory at the Wyndham Championship.

Poston completed 72 holes at Sedgefield Country Club without dropping a single shot, as his 22-under total left him one shot clear of Webb Simpson and two ahead of overnight leader Byeong-Hun An. His maiden triumph marked the first time a player won on Tour while going bogey-free for an entire tournament since Lee Trevino at the 1974 Zurich Classic.

“I probably haven’t had that many bogey-free rounds this season, this year, much less back-to-back,” Poston said. “To be able to do four in a row is pretty special, and to be able to finish it off with a 62 Sunday is pretty awesome.”

Poston closed with an 8-under 62, one shot off the lowest score of the week. After starting the final round three shots off the lead, he caught An with three birdies and an eagle over his first eight holes and took sole possession of the lead with a 6-foot birdie on the par-5 15th.

“I know he was nervous. You can’t tell if you watch him, though, and you couldn’t tell from his play,” said caddie Aaron Flener. “He was nails on those little 5-footers coming down the stretch. That’s been where we’ve struggled this year has been short-range putting, and he was awesome this week.”

The 26-year-old grew up less than 100 miles from Sedgefield in Hickory, N.C., and attended Western Carolina University. That meant ample crowd support from the Greensboro galleries as he chased down and passed the tournament leaders while maintaining his blemish-free card.

Poston started the week 83rd in the season-long points race, assured of going to the playoffs. But now he’ll head to The Northern Trust at No. 27, with a Tour Championship berth very much in play and with his first-ever Masters invite already in the mail.

“That’s unbelievable. I mean, the (two-year) exemption, obviously job security’s a good thing, but Augusta, that’s another thing,” Poston said. “That’s something I’ve always dreamt of, playing in that tournament. To know I’m in that field in April, that will be an awesome week. It will be a week I’ll never forget, no matter what happens.”

Sources: Liverpool selling Mignolet to Club Brugge

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 04 August 2019 15:25

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet is poised to join Club Brugge in a deal worth up to £8 million, sources tell ESPN FC.

The 31-year-old, who was part of the squad for the Community Shield defeat to Manchester City on Sunday, said his goodbyes to his teammates at Wembley before boarding a private plane from London to Belgium.

- When does the transfer window close?
- All major completed transfer deals

He has agreed a long-term contract, with a medical and the formalities of the transfer set to be completed on Monday.

Mignolet's fee is an initial £6.4m, rising to £8m with achievable add-ons.

Jurgen Klopp had hoped to keep the Belgium international as deputy to Alisson, saying in June that he expected the keeper to remain at Anfield.

However, Liverpool always maintained that if there was a good proposal on the table that would benefit Mignolet, they would consider it, as was the case when Lucas Leiva left for Lazio in the summer of 2017.

That has presented itself with Club Brugge offering him a starting position as well as good contract terms, while the Reds will recoup nearly all of the £9m they paid Sunderland to secure his services in 2013.

Mignolet was prevented from leaving for Napoli last year, on a loan-to-buy agreement, so Loris Karius could rebuild his career at Besiktas.

The club could not deny him another opportunity and the Belgian, who made 204 career appearances for the Reds, departs on good terms at Anfield.

Liverpool are expected to bring in a new backup keeper and were interested free agent Adrian, released from West Ham, earlier in the summer.

It's been a little over three months since our first check-in on Inter Miami CF, the new Major League Soccer franchise that's co-owned by David Beckham and set to debut in the 2020 season. With the clock ticking until their opening game, there's still a lot to be completed but progress is happening on all fronts including the announcement of their first two players.

ESPN FC's experts Tim Vickery, Tom Marshall and Jeff Carlisle look at what's going on in South Florida this summer.

Who are their first signings?

Inter Miami have gone international with their first two signings, picking up two youngsters from Argentina whose acquisition pays tribute to the excellence of the new club's scouting network.

The pair are a study in contrasts when it comes to attacking talent, and both have the potential to continue the fine record of Argentine imports to MLS. Matias Pellegrini (from Estudiantes) and Julian Carranza (from Banfield) are a pair of 19-year-olds who have been rising through the ranks in South America. They made brief appearances in last year's Copa Libertadores, South America's Champions League, and they both play for teams that who finished the 2018-19 season in the bottom half of the table.

Pellegrini is a left-footed "support striker" capable of operating off the main centre-forward all across the attacking line. He has worked on both flanks with Estudiantes and may well be at his best down the left corridor some 10 yards in from the touchline. Strong on the ball, he can drive forward at pace, isn't limited to his left foot and has a mature awareness of the game around him. The fact that his goals have included strikes against Boca Juniors, Independiente and Racing hints at a big match temperament but outside of his set-piece savvy, it seems more likely he'll be setting up more MLS goals than he scores.

The beneficiary of his approach play could be Carranza, a stocky, penalty area operator with good acceleration and the ability to take his chances first time on either foot. Carranza has a little more first-team experience than Pellegrini and the pair could work well together to give Inter Miami's new fans a happy season in 2020. -- Tim Vickery

Who else have Inter Miami been linked with?

Ever since the Miami MLS franchise was confirmed, expectations have been sky high with regard to the stars and big names who'd be eager to ply their trade in South Florida. The intersection of celebrity and culture in Miami makes it an appealing target and to accomplish that goal, the club have hired a ton of experience in their front office to help build the first squad.

Paul McDonough, Inter Miami sporting director, a former agent and previously Vice President for the successful Atlanta United, isn't green when it comes to putting together rosters for Major League Soccer clubs. He's also been keeping his cards close to his chest, although he did tell the Miami Herald on July 20 that the idea is to have "between four and eight" players signed up by September.

It's assumed that the Miami franchise will go for a megastar, but much of the speculation around big names like James Rodriguez, Sergio Busquets, Luis Suarez, Theo Walcott, Mario Balotelli and Radamel Falcao is just that: speculation. Equally, talent will be scouted to manage the squad and one report even suggested that Diego Maradona could end up on the sideline of the team McDonough is putting together. (It seems unrealistic despite Maradona's success in his last stint as coach with second division Mexico side Dorados de Sinaloa.) Much more likely is a coach with vast experience in Europe, along the lines of Laurent Blance, even if the Frenchman's name hasn't yet been linked.

Will Miami continue to actively recruiting in South America? Of the aforementioned big names, a pair of Colombian stars, James and Falcao, is perhaps fueled by Beckham's visit to Colombia in June, as well as his subsequent comments about the duo and their respective qualities.

Yet bringing in a star name isn't a simple process. The fact Miami starts MLS play in March 2020 means that the new signings need somewhere to play for the next six months, just like Carlos Vela did when he moved from Real Sociedad to LAFC ahead of the 2018 season. Sources tell ESPN FC that Falcao had some interest in coming to MLS, but his current situation at Monaco appears untenable given his desire to leave Ligue 1. Yet it's unclear whether he'd want to spend another six months in France or go on loan until Inter Miami is ready to begin play, even though he only has one year left on his current contract and would be available as a free agent next June.

"Obviously the sporting project is always the priority, but having a family like ours it's obvious that family factors have to be taken into consideration," said Falcao in Colombia on July 19.

A source told ESPN FC that the other name regularly linked to Miami was Mexican international Hector Moreno. There was a degree of interest around a player who recently bought an apartment in the city, but that particular rumor was quashed when the 31-year-old signed for Qatari side Al-Gharafa late last month. Of the other bigger name Mexican players connected to Miami, Guillermo Ochoa and Andres Guardado look set for stays in Europe as does Javier Hernandez.

One player who is likely to join Miami is Atletico de Rafaela and Argentina youth international striker Matias Godoy. The 17-year-old wouldn't be able to move to Miami until he turns 18 in January, thanks to FIFA rules regarding the transfer of minors, but the Argentine club's president, Ricardo Castro, is quoted in Sin Mordaza as saying that there is a verbal agreement with Miami.

Only the dates about when he is to join is left to be ironed out, according to Castro. A report in the same publication suggests Miami will buy 50 percent of his rights for between $900,000 and $1 million. -- Tom Marshall

The latest on Inter Miami's stadium

On the business side, it's been a tale of two counties for Inter Miami CF.

In Broward County, everything seems to be moving ahead as planned. The team's training facility and temporary venue in Fort Lauderdale has been approved by the city. Ground has been broken and the construction of the foundations for the canopy and seating have begun. More than 8,000 non-refundable season ticket deposits have been made, including 2,000 for premium seating, which is far more than managing owner Jorge Mas anticipated.

"I think that that complex, with the stadium and the training center and the fields, will be one of the first-class facilities for soccer in the U.S.," Mas said.

What's happening in Miami-Dade County has been much more of a slog. A lease for the team's permanent home, Miami Freedom Park, must be approved by four of the five Miami city commissioners. Manolo Reyes and Willy Gort are on record as opposing it. There's also a resolution stating that the lease must be approved by Sept. 15, though Mas insisted that it isn't legally binding.

Gort is the swing vote, and Mas said Inter Miami has done what it could to address the commissioner's concerns. What's more, he's visited more than 600 homes in the district to win over residents. The First Tee golf program for the area's youth has been relocated, satisfying another Gort request. Mas is hopeful to bring the finalized lease before the city commission on Sept. 12 and that once the lease is presented, Gort will be won over.

"I'd like to get this done in September, and I'm confident that Commissioner Gort will get there," he said. "And I'm not giving up on Commissioner Reyes. I've always aspired for 5-0."

Even though the on-field project is starting to take shape, much still needs to happen on the business side in order to get the Inter Miami franchise into its impressive eventual home. -- Jeff Carlisle

Rangers fan struck by line drive taken to hospital

A female fan seated in the 25th row down the right-field line in Globe Life Park was struck in the head by a Willie Calhoun liner in the first inning of the Rangers win over the Tigers on Sunday.

Calhoun waited for a few minutes and watched as the fan was tended to at her seat before returning to the batter's box.

The fan eventually walked out of the seating area accompanied by stadium personnel and was transported to a hospital for further evaluation.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Furthermore, he played against the event’s leading players; in the group stage he lost to Nigeria’s Quadri Aruna, the top seed (11-4, 11-1, 11-5), finishing in second position, before in the opening round suffering at the hands of Egypt’s Ahmed Ali Saleh, the no.2 seed and three times the tournament’s winner (11-1, 11-6, 11-8, 11-6).

However, there was more than consolation, representing the appropriately named Vision Table Tennis Club, lining up alongside colleagues Aime Bushema, François Ishimwe, and Elie Kayotare; earlier in the proceedings in Lagos, a bronze medal had been secured in the men’s event at the 2019 ITTF Africa Club Championships.

Again that may not appear a resounding success but four years ago, table tennis lay dormant in Rwanda; in 2016 John Bosco Birungi was elected President of the Rwanda Table Tennis Federation, times changed. There was a new energy, a vibrant approach.

“Since 2016 when a new leader took over, things have started looking up for table tennis. Now schools are supported with equipment while coaches are also sent to schools to train the students. We have also organised regional tournaments which have ignited interest in table tennis. Under the new leadership of John Bosco Birungi, table tennis will continue to grow and we will be able to rub shoulders with some of the best in the continent.” Elie Kayotare

Undoubtedly, the podium finish in the 2019 ITTF Africa Club Championships is a major boost to morale; especially as it was Rwanda’s debut in the competition.

“We never imagined we would be mounting the podium in our first outing at the African Club Championships. It was a good feeling particularly for table tennis back home in Rwanda and I am sure with this feat, the Ministry of Sports will start giving table tennis the needed support now. Our federation has tried to raise the status of the sport and we hope this performance in Lagos will bring good tidings to the sport in Rwanda.” Kayitare Elie

Similarly, the success has proved highly motivating for François Ishimwe.

“I think my coming to Lagos and playing against some of the best players in Africa has once again given me confidence that with more practice I can be among the best in the continent. I am particularly excited about meeting the best player in Africa, Quadri Aruna; for me, he has been an inspiration to many of us. He is such a humble person; his attitude on and off the table motivates us. I know that with more exposure and training I can compete favourably in Africa.” François Ishimwe

Proud players and in addition sitting watching matters unfold, a proud president.

“As the President of the Rwanda Table Tennis Federation, I’m happy that in our first major continental event, we go home with a bronze medal. I’m extremely proud of the boys! This is a great achievement and is a result of the hard work put into the game over the past three years. It’s something that the younger kids in Rwanda, who are just starting to learn the game, can look up to as they develop. John Bosco Birungi

Segun Toriola departs, Quadri Aruna survives

The no.4 seed, Segun Toriola was beaten in the opening round by Congo Brazzaville’s Saheed Idowu, the no.6 seed (6-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-8, 6-11, 11-9); Quadri Aruna, the top seed, after accounting for Congo Democratic’s Gedeon Kassa (12-10, 11-8, 11-2, 11-0), experienced a real fright.

He was extended the full seven games distance by Senegal’s rapidly improving Ibrahima Diaw, eventually emerging successful by the closest of margins in the decider (9-11, 11-4, 11-3, 7-11, 11-2, 7-11, 12-10).

At the semi-final stage, Quadri Aruna now meets Egypt’s Omar Assar, the contest that has been the final in the four most recent editions of the tournament. No such great moments of drama; Omar Assar, the no.3 seed, accounted for Congo Brazzaville’s Christ Bienatiki (11-6, 11-4, 11-5, 11-5), before ending in the hopes of the host nation’s Olajide Omotayo (14-12, 6-11, 8-11, 12-10, 11-2, 11-4).

Progress for Omar Assar as anticipated, it was the same for colleague Ahmed Ali Saleh. He overcame Rwanda’s Eric Niyonizigiye (11-1, 11-6, 11-8, 11-6), before reserving his last four place courtesy of success in opposition to the host nation’s Bode Aboidun (11-8, 9-11, 12-10, 7-11, 11-9, 11-5).

Conversely, the advance of the three time winner’s semi-final opponent, Algeria’s Sami Kherouf, was not necessarily to be expected. The no.8 seed, he caused Nigeria more pain by beating 14 year old, Taiwo Mati (7-11, 11-4, 11-8, 7-11, 11-6, 11-9), before ending the charge of the man in form, Saheed Idowu (9-11, 11-4, 12-10, 13-11, 13-15, 11-5).

Meanwhile, in the women’s event, Dina Meshref advanced in style, a direct entry to the quarter-finals, she accounted for Fatima Bello (11-9, 11-2, 11-2, 11-8) and now confronts a further Nigerian in the form of Offiong Edem, a player for whom it was a return to winning ways the hard way.

Second place in her group the previous day, she overcame Egypt’s Farah Abdel-Aziz, the no.3 seed in a titanic seven games duel (4-11, 7-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-6, 2-11, 15-13), before in a further full distance contest overcoming colleague and no.5 seed, Olufunke Oshonaike (11-9, 7-11, 11-6, 8-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-8).

A semi-final place for Offiong Edem, it was the same for Tunisia’s Fadwa Garci, the player against whom she had suffered defeat the previous day. Similar to Dina Meshref a direct entry to the main draw, she beat Nigeria’s Ajoke Ojomu (11-7, 11-5, 6-11, 2-11, 11-8, 11-7) to reserve her semi-final place.

In the penultimate round, Egypt’s Yousra Helmy awaits; the no.4 seed, she progressed by overcoming South Africa’s Danisha Patel (11-3, 11-8, 11-4, 11-6) and Cameroon’s Sarah Hanffou, the no.6 seed (11-4, 11-6, 8-11, 11-6, 11-7).

Play at the 2019 ITTF-Africa Cup concludes on Monday 5th August.

Mitchell & Amici Are Lamborghini Aces

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. – Pristine conditions welcomed drivers and teams competing in the second race of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America weekend on Sunday at Road America.

They took full advantage and put on a sparkling show that saw a pair of new winners this year among the four classes in the single-make series featuring Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo EVOs.

At the conclusion of the race on the 4.048-mile natural terrain road course, the No. 1 Prestige Performance with Wayne Taylor Racing, Lamborghini Paramus repeated its overall and Pro class win from Saturday, while the No. 09 US RaceTronics, Lamborghini Vancouver made it a weekend sweep in Pro-Am.

Meanwhile, the No. 33 Prestige Performance with Wayne Taylor Racing, Lamborghini Paramus rode to victory in the Am class, with the No. 88 GMG Racing, Lamborghini Newport Beach triumphant in LB Cup. It marked the first wins this season for the No. 33 and No. 88.

The entire 50-minute race ran under green-flag conditions, placing the emphasis on strong on-track performance and flawless mandatory pit stops. Starting from the pole position in the No. 1, Sandy Mitchell built a lead of more than eight seconds before the pit window opened with 30 minutes remaining. Meanwhile, the action was fast and furious behind the leader, including a sensational pass for third place on lap four by Jacob Eidson in the No. 09 on Corey Lewis in the No. 29 Change Racing, Lamborghini Charlotte.

Race leader Mitchell made his mandatory pit stop on Lap 11, turning over the wheel to co-driver Andrea Amici. Eidson waited longer to pit, taking the overall lead before stopping on Lap 13 so Damon Ockey could hop into the No. 09.

Once the pit cycle completed, the No. 1 with Amici driving returned atop the scoring pylon, ahead of the No. 27 Dream Racing Motorsport, Lamborghini Dallas. Ockey ran third in the No. 09.

It didn’t take long, though, for the charging No. 29 – with Richy Antinucci in the cockpit – to overtake Ockey for third. At the same time, the No. 43 Prestige Performance with Wayne Taylor Racing, Lamborghini Paramus – leader at the time in LB Cup – was handed a drive-through penalty because its pit stop didn’t fulfill the minimum time requirement. As the No. 43 was riding through pit lane, Thomas Lovelady was wheeling the No. 88 past the No. 22 Dream Racing Motorsport, Lamborghini Atlanta for the LB Cup lead.

When the checkered flag waved, Amici won in the No. 1 by 5.211 seconds over the No. 27 co-driven by Cedric Sbirrazzuoli and Paolo Ruberti. The No. 29 of Lewis and Antinucci rounded out the overall and Pro podiums.

The No. 09 of Eidson/Ockey held on for win in Pro-Am, with the No. 24 US RaceTronics, Lamborghini La Jolla driven by Ron Atapattu and Patrick Liddy second and the No. 69 Prestige Performance with Wayne Taylor Racing, Lamborghini Paramus and co-drivers Eric Curran and William Hubbell third.

Cameron Cassels drove the No. 33 to the win in the Am class, with the No. 63 Change Racing, Lamborghini Charlotte driven by McKay Snow – Saturday’s winner – in second and the No. 6 US RaceTronics, Lamborghini Beverly Hills piloted by Steven Aghakhani third.

Lovelady and Jeffrey Cheng won in LB Cup with the No. 88. Ashton Harrison made a sensational recovery from the drive-through penalty in the No. 43 to finish second in class with co-driver Stephanie Cemo. Third place in LB Cup went to the No. 3 Dream Racing Motorsport, Lamborghini North LA driven by Randy Sellari.

De Angelis Survives Road America Chaos

Published in Racing
Sunday, 04 August 2019 13:23

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. – It was a clear Sunday morning for sports car fans at Road America, but teams and drivers in the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama experienced a chaotic race two to wrap up the weekend’s doubleheader.

A full-course caution on lap one as the 45-minute race started was followed by several more, including a yellow with less than four minutes remaining that ended the race. With that, the checkered flag came the end of the second and final joint weekend of the season for the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA and Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada series.

Roman De Angelis in the No. 79 Kelly-Moss Road and Race Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car paced the field for the duration of the race, leading flag-to-flag for another weekend sweep of 2019 after winning race one on Saturday.

The 18-year-old from Belle River, Ontario, earned points towards both championships, swelling his lead in the USA title hunt to 68 points over Max Root and by 59 points over Jeff Kingsley in the Canadian championship.

“I’m kind of disappointed with the way the weekend was, not for our performances, but racing wise,” said De Angelis. “As you guys all saw, there was a lot of chaos. I come here to race. I like racing, I like battling with people, I like passing, defending. None of that could really happen with all these restarts and yellow periods.”

While De Angelis was still pleased with the victory, he was thrilled for his teammate Alan Metni in the No. 99 Porsche, who scored his first overall podium finish in GT3 Cup Challenge competition and won the Platinum Masters class in both the USA and Canada championships. Metni finished second overall.

“I really just can’t congratulate Alan Metni enough,” said De Angelis. “Second overall and after the struggles and ups-and-downs over the last three years is pretty impressive. Not only to do it, but to do it and give me a run for my money – which I’m pushing pretty hard out there – so that’s pretty cool.”

“Like I said yesterday, I’m the luckiest guy I know,” said Metni, who on Saturday finished a then-career best finish of fourth. “I can’t believe I get to do this. I can’t believe all the wonderful people who are so focused on doing this and doing it better each and every time they come out that make this all work.

“I’m just really proud of my team and happy to be here. I always used to say, ‘The race is won in the practice,’ and our little team is the hardest-training, hardest-practicing team out there. My guys gave me a great car today. Not just today, but every day that we train so I’ve got to thank them.”

Rounding out the overall GT3 Cup Challenge USA Platinum class podium was Root in the No. 7 Wright Motorsports Porsche, besting his finish of seventh on Saturday.

Finishing second and third, respectively, in the GT3 Cup Challenge USA Platinum Masters class were Jeff Mosing in the No. 68 Topp Racing Porsche and Charlie Luck in the No. 45 Porsche for Wright Motorsports.

In the GT3 Cup Challenge Canada Platinum class, rookie Ethan Simioni in the No. 40 Policaro Motorsport Porsche repeated his best career finish of third, which he now has recorded three times all at joint GT3 Cup Challenge events.

Behind Metni in the Canadian Platinum Masters class were the No. 88 Mark Motors Racing Porsche of Marco Cirone in second and the No. 37 TPC Racing Porsche of Michael Levitas in third.

Meanwhile in the GT3 Cup Challenge USA Gold class, Sebastian Carazo won his seventh race of the season in the No. 27 Porsche for NGT Motorsport.

Ferriol – who won Saturday’s race at Road America – finished just 1.414 seconds behind Carazo for a runner-up finish in the No. 5 Moorespeed Porsche. He now sits second in the championship standings, 41 points behind Carazo.

Bart Collins earned two trophies on Sunday in the No. 22 MCR Racing Porsche – a third-place Gold class podium trophy and a Yokohama Tire Hard Charger Award, gaining the most positions by a Gold class competitor after starting last and jumping to third.

In GT3 Cup Challenge Canada, it was back-to-back Yokohama Tire Hard Charger Awards for Michael Fantin in the No. 14 Engineered Automotive Porsche who finished eighth in the Canadian Platinum class.
