Amazon Prime To Support Larsons Double Pursuit

Published in Racing
Tuesday, 01 April 2025 11:40

MOORESVILLE, N.C. Amazon Prime will be a presenting sponsor of Kyle Larsons attempt at the 109th Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on May 25, in addition to producing a movie about the monumental two-year quest.

Kyles double attempt is one of the most exciting storylines in all of sports, and were thrilled to be part of it, said Stacey Rosenson, Head of U.S. Sports Marketing, Prime Video. As we prepare to broadcast our first NASCAR Cup Series race with the Coca-Cola 600, having this kind of historic moment unfold live on Prime Video and capturing it in a documentary film is a truly unique opportunity.

Were looking forward to sponsoring Kyles effort and taking fans inside the intensity and emotion that go with it.

For the second straight year, Larson will attempt to take on 1,100 miles of racing dubbed the #Hendrick1100 presented by Prime Video starting with the 109thRunning of the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and concluding with NASCARs longest event, the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The Memorial Day weekend effort will feature Prime Video branding on both of Larsons race cars: the No. 17 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet fielded by the Arrow McLaren IndyCar Team and the No. 5 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet stock car of Hendrick Motorsports.

In addition to its sponsorship, Prime Video is producing a feature-length documentary chronicling Larsons quest to complete the two marquee races on the same day.

Filming for the untitled project began in October 2023 and will encompass the drivers pursuits in both 2024 and 2025.

Slated to launch next year on Prime Video, the documentary is being directed by Emmy and Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Cynthia Hill. It is produced by Hills Markay Media, Imagine Documentaries and Hendrick Motorsports, in association with NASCAR Studios and Penske Entertainment.

Prime Video recently joined Hendrick Motorsports as a sponsor of Chase Elliotts No. 9 team. Prime Video is expanding its presence ahead of becoming NASCARs first fully direct-to-consumer media partner.

The platform will exclusively stream five NASCAR Cup Series races in 2025, kicking off with the Coca-Cola 600, and will provide practice and qualifying coverage for most of the seasons first half.

Were proud to grow our relationship with Prime Video, said Rick Hendrick, the owner of Hendrick Motorsports who will again co-own Larsons Indianapolis 500 entry with Arrow McLaren. Theyve made a bold commitment to our sport, and this is a powerful way to promote their platform across two of the most iconic events in racing. Were excited to welcome Prime Video to the effort, showcase their brand on such a big stage and collaborate on what will be an incredible documentary project. The film is going to show Kyle like people have never seen him his preparation, his mindset and what it takes to pursue such a daunting challenge.

Larson, 32, earned Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year honors in 2024 after an impressive debut that included a record-setting qualifying performance.

The 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion became just the fifth driver to attempt the Indianapolis-Charlotte double and will be only the third to try it more than once, joining Tony Stewart and Robby Gordon. Last season, he led the Cup Series with six points-paying race wins and currently ranks second in the 2025 standings.

Last year gave us a great foundation, and now we get to build on it, Larson said. Im excited to come back stronger in 2025 and give it everything weve got to finish all 1,100 miles. Having Prime Video on board especially with them streaming the 600 and documenting my whole experience is pretty special. May is going to be a crazy month, and Im ready to get after it.

IMSAs Long History At Grand Prix Of Long Beach

Published in Racing
Tuesday, 01 April 2025 13:00

LONG BEACH, Calif.  The Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach is celebrating its golden jubilee, with 50 years of racing history dating to the inaugural event staged for Formula 5000 cars in September 1975.

The Long Beach street circuit has evolved over the years, and so has the competitive lineup. The original F5000 race was organized as a test run to demonstrate that promoter Chris Pook and the seaside venue would be prepared to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix.

That hurdle was cleared, and the United States Grand Prix West was run from 1976-83. When Pook could no longer afford the cost of F1, the CART-sanctioned Indy car championship took over as the Long Beach Grand Prix headliner.

These days, the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the IndyCar Series share top billing at Long Beach, with IMSAs 100-minute sprint race for the Grand Touring Prototype and Grand Touring Daytona classes highlighting the Saturday schedule.

This is the 21st time sports car racing has claimed an important place on the Long Beach card, dating to 1990, when IMSAs sedan-based GTO and GTU (for engines 2.5-liter and smaller) classes hit the streets for 60 minutes of slam-bang action.

Heres a brief look back at the Long Beach Grand Prixs rich sports car history:

The inaugural 60-minute Long Beach sports car race in 1990. (IMSA photo)

1990: The inaugural 60-minute Long Beach sports car race set a high bar to match. Dorsey Schroeder lost the doghouse (hood and front fenders) of his Roush Racing Mercury Cougar during a furious scrap with Pete Halsmers Mazda RX-7, but Schroeder still came back to pass Halsmer for the win. John Finger won GTU in a Mazda MX-6.

1991: Halsmers Mazda was again in the thick of things, this year fighting Robby Gordon in a Roush Ford Mustang. At one point, Gordon unintentionally tipped Halsmer into a spin on the back straight; Halsmer recovered and very intentionally drove into Gordon a few corners later. Steve Millen gratefully accepted the GTO win in his Nissan 300ZX, while John Fergus topped GTU in a Dodge Daytona. Its worth seeking out the original broadcasts of these 90s races on YouTube because they are enhanced by the call of Bruce Flanders, the longtime PA voice of the Long Beach Grand Prix and Irwindale Speedway.

2006: Sports cars returned to Long Beach after a 15-year absence with a robust field of 26 Daytona Prototypes in what was then called the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series. Scott Pruett and Luis Diaz won a 90-minute contest in a Lexus-Riley for Chip Ganassi Racing. A then-rookie, Colin Braun, finished seventh and is still active today.

2007: The sports car race was extended to 100 minutes and was now part of the American Le Mans Series championship. Long Beach was one of a handful of ALMS races where a competitor in the Le Mans Prototype 2 class took the overall victory over larger and generally faster LMP1 competition. Romain Dumas and Timo Bernhards Penske Porsche RS Spyder led a total of six Porsche and Acura LMP2 cars ahead of the factory Audi LMP1 entries in seventh and ninth. GT racing returned, with Corvette Racing earning a 1-2 finish in GT1 and a Risi Competizione Ferrari grabbing the GT2 laurels.

2008: Audi rebounded with a 1-2 LMP1 and overall finish, with Scott Sharp and David Brabham prevailing for Acura over the victorious-in-07 Penske Porsches in LMP2. Corvette Racing repeated its GT1 1-2, this year with the No. 3 entry ahead of the No. 4.

2009: Acura swept both overall and LMP1 (with Gil de Ferran and Simon Pagenaud) and LMP2 (with Diaz and Adrian Fernandez) with two different types of chassis. Corvette triumphed again in GT1, while the Flying Lizard Porsche duo of Patrick Long and Jorg Bergmeister bested GT2.

2010: Pagenaud and Brabham combined to win the top class in a rebadged Honda Performance Development (HPD) P2-specification entry, courtesy of Pagenauds last lap pass on Fernandez. Bergmeister and Long repeated in a consolidated GT class, ahead of Corvette in second and local favorite Bill Auberlen third in a BMW Team RLL entry he shared with Tommy Milner.

2011: With the sports car race bumped up to a full two hours, Klaus Graf and Lucas Luhr took the win in an Aston Martin-powered Lola LMP1. Joey Hand and Dirk Mueller won the combined GT class in a BMW, with Corvette second. Now AO Racing team principal, Gunnar Jeannette won his second straight Long Beach race in Prototype Challenge.

2012: Now driving an HPD LMP1, Graf and Luhr repeated their winning 2011 performance. Milner secured his first Long Beach win co-driving the No. 4 Corvette with Oliver Gavin, ahead of Hand and Mueller for BMW.

2013: In the final year for the two-hour format and for ALMS, the HPD LMP1 of Luhr and Graf completed a three-peat. Braun secured a class win in PC with Jon Bennett; BMW finished 1-2 in GT with Auberlen and Maxime Martin on top.

2014: Pruett and Memo Rojas in a Ganassi Riley-Ford won the IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship 100-minute sprint round. Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia captured the GTLM win in their No. 3 Corvette.

The 2015 IMSA race at the Grand Prix of Long Beach. (IMSA photo)

2015: The Taylor brothers (Ricky and Jordan) took the first of three straight overall Long Beach wins, guiding a Wayne Taylor Racing Corvette Daytona Prototype home first over Ganassis Pruett and Hand. BMW reclaimed the GTLM mantle, Auberlen and Dirk Werner ahead of the Risi Ferrari and No. 3 Corvette.

2016: Ricky and Jordan Taylor led a Corvette DP podium sweep in the rebranded IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Drama came in GTLM with Nick Tandy and Patrick Pilets No. 911 Porsche emerging on top from a rough-and-tumble battle vs. Corvette.

2017: With a new car, the Taylor brothers remained invincible for the third year in a row, now driving the new Cadillac DPi-V.R Daytona Prototype international (DPi) entry. But last-lap hairpin drama promoted the No. 4 Corvette of Milner and Gavin to the GTLM win as the No. 3 car was stuck behind GTD cars that were stopped on course. Jeannette and Cooper MacNeil took a WeatherTech Mercedes-AMG GT3 to the GTD win.

2018: Back to a two-class DPi and GTLM format, Barbosa and Filipe Albuquerque took the overall win in the Action Express Racing-prepared, No. 5 Mustang Sampling Cadillac. GTLM featured the same top two as in 2017, the No. 4 Corvette beating the No. 67 Ford.

2019: Albuquerque and Barbosa repeated in a Cadillac DPi, this time over the pair of Penske Acuras. Porsche won in GTLM with the emerging BamThor duo of Earl Bamber and Laurens Vanthoor finishing ahead of the two Corvettes.

2021: The global pandemic created a 19-month gap between Long Beach races, with the 21 event placed in September in a one-off reprise of the original 1975 date. General Motors had a banner day at the rebranded Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach event. Pipo Derani and Felipe Nasrs Whelen Cadillac led a Cadillac DPi podium sweep, while Corvette (led by Milner and Tandy) went 1-2 in the final GTLM street race. Bryan Sellers and Madison Snow kicked off a three-year GTD win streak in their Paul Miller Racing Lamborghini.

2022: One of the more memorable Long Beach sports car races, as Sebastien Bourdais spun out of the lead, but regained it within a few laps to win with Renger van der Zande in a 1-2 for Cadillac and Ganassi. Sellers and Snow doubled up in GTD, now in a PMR BMW and delivering the BMW M4 GT3 its first win, while Ross Gunn and Alex Riberas blitzed GTD PRO in their Heart of Racing Team Aston Martin.

2023: The first Long Beach in IMSAs new GTP era saw tire strategy propel Mathieu Jaminet and Nick Tandy to the win, the first for Porsche Penske Motorsports new Porsche 963, over the No. 25 BMW. Snow and Sellers completed their Long Beach three-peat in GTD while Vasser Sullivan Lexus kicked off a win streak of its own with Jack Hawksworth and Ben Barnicoat winning the most recent GTD PRO race on these streets.

2024: Bourdais and van der Zande reprised their 2022 win, their Cadillac now upgraded to a GTP-class V-Series.R. With GTD now the sole production-based class, Parker Thompson joined Barnicoat in a one-off No. 89 Lexus to commemorate the year the brand was launched in America to win this class.

WoO Notes: The Jason Johnson Classic

Published in Racing
Tuesday, 01 April 2025 14:15

COLCORD, Okla.  The time has come to honor one of sprint car racings finest men Jason Johnson.

The Ragin Cajun embodied professionalism throughout his career as he launched and built Jason Johnson Racing into an organization capable of competing at the highest level of the sport. Johnson knew no strangers, treating all in the pit area with kindness and respect.

After his passing, the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars have prioritized racing in his honor every season, and this weekend brings the seventh edition of the Jason Johnson Classic presented by FK Rod Ends.

For the second year in a row, Arrowhead Speedway is the host. The pristine facility just west of the Arkansas border welcomed The Greatest Show on Dirt for the first time last year.

This time around the event grows to two days as the countrys best sprint car drivers are set for a full weekend (April 4-5) of action in the Sooner State. Saturdays winner will bank $20,000.

#FOREVER41

The Jason Johnson Classic naturally brings plenty of attention to the Jason Johnson Racing crew, and Carson Macedo will look to drive the No. 41 on a storybook trip to Victory Lane Saturday.

The JJR team took the first running back in 2019, leaving no dry eyes on the property of Lake Ozark Speedway. That win came with David Gravel behind the wheel, and the team is still looking for their second event triumph.

It would no doubt be a special moment for Macedo if he can pull it off. The Lemoore, Calif., native was the first to win in the No. 41 after Johnsons passing in 2018. Macedo claimed his prelim at Knoxville Raceways 360 Nationals. He ran a handful of races for the team to close out that year and laid the foundations for his eventual move to JJR in 2021. His best finish in the Jason Johnson Classic is second in 2023.

Macedo has won 42 World of Outlaws features since joining the team and last year nearly lifted them to Johnsons dream of a title, finishing runner-up to David Gravel by less than 100 points. Hes in the championship hunt again early in 2025, trailing Gravel by 78 markers with 13 races complete. The 28-year-old has only missed the top 10 once this season with Johnsons cousin Philip Dietz continuing to turn the wrenches.

SIX RACES, SIX WINNERS

Parity has been the pattern through six runnings of the Jason Johnson Classic as no driver has been able to claim more than one through six runnings.

Gravels victory in the inaugural edition was already mentioned, and he was followed by James McFadden, Brad Sweet, and Jacob Allen while the event took place at Lake Ozark Speedway. Rico Abreu claimed 2023 when the event shifted to 81 Speedway.

Last year, it relocated to its current home of Arrowhead Speedway and Sheldon Haudenschild scored the $20,000 prize.

That leaves many powerhouses of the sport without a Jason Johnson Classic win that could continue the trend this weekend. Names such as Donny Schatz, Michael Buddy Kofoid, Logan Schuchart, Giovanni Scelzi, and others will be in search of their first. Two former winners, Gravel and Haudenschild, will be in attendance aiming to become the first with two.

ROTH ROLLING

It took a few weeks, but Michael Buddy Kofoid and Roth Motorsports are performing at the level many expected them too in 2025.

It began with six consecutive top 10 finishes beginning with the final night of Federated Auto Parts DIRTcar Nationalsthrough the first of two evenings at Kennedale Speedway Park. And in the four races since that streak started, Kofoid and company have elevated to another level.

It started with a win in the Cowtown Classic finale.

Kofoid then led laps on night one at Cotton Bowl Speedway before a runner-up. He finished second the following night too. The latest statement was a victory in his debut at Lawton Speedway to make it four consecutive top two finishes.

Now the focus turns to Arrowhead, where the Penngrove, Calif., native finished seventh last year in his only trip to the track.

NEW POWER

Major news hit the sprint car world last Friday when it was announced that Donny Schatz and his Tony Stewart/Curb Agajanian Racing team would be returning to Chevrolet engines after spending the last several seasons running and developing the FPS410. The No. 15 will continue to attract plenty of attention as Schatz gets reacquainted with Chevy power.

The sample size is small so far as Schatz has only one night back with the bowtie. He drove from 15th to 10th on Friday at Lawton. Schatzs Arrowhead experience is also limited to one previous appearance.

But around the corner there are plenty of tracks on the calendar where Schatz has loads of experience. I-55 Federated Auto Parts Raceway Park is home to a trio of his wins and is a week after the Jason Johnson Classic. The following weekend brings the tour to Knoxville Raceway, and Schatzs endless accomplishments at The Sprint Car Capital of the World are well known. Not too long after that is a weekend at Eldora Speedway.

KNOTTED UP

The 2025 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year battle continues to live up to the hype.

Only a couple weeks after Garet Williamson took over the top spot for the first time, theres a tie at the top. Early leader Chris Windom finished ninth at Lawton, his fifth top 10 of the year and enough to equal Williamsons point total. Despite Windom catching him, Williamson has still been solid as of late with nine straight finishes within the top 15.

Behind those two lurks Hunter Schuerenberg in third, 30 markers behind. Then, after Hunter Percent its Cole Macedo, Zach Hampton, Conner Morrell and Skylar Gee.

NASCAR Penalizes Smith 50 Points, $25,000

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. NASCAR officials penalized driver Sammy Smith Tuesday afternoon for his role in the much-publicized final-lap accident during Saturdays Xfinity Series race at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway.

Smith was docked 50 points and fined $25,000, but was not suspended.

Smith ran his JR Motorsports Chevrolet into the back bumper of Grays Toyota entering turn three on the final lap of the Marine Corps. 250. The contact caused Gray to spin, creating a multi-car accident as Austin Hill scooted past for the victory.

Gray and fellow driver Jeb Burton were each fined $5,000 for behavioral penalties that occurred inside the infield care center.

The penalty dropped Smith from sixth to 13th in the Xfinity Series standings.

Kane downplays PL return: 'Happy' at Bayern

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 01 April 2025 15:14

Harry Kane has downplayed the prospect of a Premier League return in the summer and said he is "extremely happy" at Bayern Munich.

The England captain left the Premier League after 10 years with Tottenham Hotspur to join the Bavarian giants in 2023. He has been the club's most consistent performer since, scoring staggering 77 goals in 83 matches.

In an exclusive interview with ESPN, Kane said he is "really comfortable" at Bayern, adding that his family, who moved to Germany in January last year, have also settled well into life there.

When asked if he would consider returning to England one day, he said: "I'm not sure. I've said throughout my whole career, I'm not someone who likes to think too far ahead. I'm extremely happy here. I think we have a fantastic team, fantastic coaching staff and I just feel like whilst I feel like I'm in the best condition, I wanna play at the highest level possible, and this is as high as it gets,

"So I know a lot can change in football in a short space of time and things can happen, but ultimately my focus is here. I'm not thinking about any other league or any other team. And with football, I like to just go the flow and at the moment the flow is here at Bayern Munich."

Bayern are well poised to win the Bundesliga this season and are six points clear at the top of the table with seven games left. They are also in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, where they face Inter Milan.

Kane has been central to both campaigns. His 22 goals have put him on track to finish as the Bundesliga top-scorer for the second successive season and is the joint second-highest scorer in the Champions League with 10 goals.

The 31-year-old believes the high stakes of playing for Bayern have helped push him to another level.

"I think when you're just playing in the biggest games every season, year after year, I think that puts you on that stage. I had moments at Spurs where we had that ... we had some really great years where we was challenging for titles, and were in the final of the Champions League. So, I had those moments at Spurs, but not on a consistent basis. It wasn't year after year, " he said.

"This is my second year in Bayern and we have the chance to reach our second semifinal in the Champions League, another title race. So yeah, all those factors that come into it. Bayern are seen as one of the biggest clubs in the world and it's exciting to play for them.

Arteta 'worried' as Arsenal's Gabriel limps off

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 01 April 2025 15:14

Mikel Arteta has admitted he's "worried" about Gabriel after the Arsenal defender was forced off with an apparent hamstring injury in their 2-1 Premier League win over Fulham on Tuesday.

The Brazil center-back pulled up while running back toward his goal as Fulham launched a counterattack. When play eventually stopped, he dropped to the ground and shook his head in a signal that he needed to be replaced.

Gabriel eventually came off in the 16th minute, replaced by Jakub Kiwior, and his availability for next week's Champions League meeting with Real Madrid has been thrown into doubt.

Another Arsenal defender, Jurriën Timber, also went to ground in the first half after a clash with Raúl Jiménez. The Netherlands international was able to carry on playing, but was substituted in the 77th minute.

"I'm worried, because he never wants to come off -- and he had to," Arsenal boss Arteta said of Gabriel.

"He's not really sure how big it is or what it was exactly, but he could not continue. He felt something [in his hamstring], yeah.

"There's a week [until Real Madrid], but I would say today the way he is normally, it's difficult.

On Timber, Arteta added: "Timber was struggling yesterday but we lost Ben [White] as well. He did a big effort to try to play but he could not continue."

Arsenal, who are second in the league and started the Fulham match 12 points behind Liverpool, have a two-legged quarterfinal meeting with Madrid this month. The first leg is at the Emirates Stadium on April 8.

Messi's bodyguard banned from MLS sidelines

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 01 April 2025 15:14

Lionel Messi's bodyguard Yassine Cheuko has been banned from protecting the Argentina forward from the touchline during Inter Miami matches.

Cheuko gained widespread recognition after social media videos showed him closely watching the crowd to stop potential pitch invaders from harming the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner.

MLS has decided to take full control of matchday security, though, and Cheuko will be permitted only in the locker room and mixed zones.

"They don't allow me to be on the field anymore," the bodyguard told Spanish media.

"I was in Europe for seven years, working for Ligue 1 and the Champions League, and only six people invaded the pitch.

"I came to the USA and in just 20 months, 16 people have already done so. There's a huge problem here. I'm not the problem. Let me help Messi."

Cheuko said he will continue to work on Messi's personal security team outside of the stadiums.

This story includes a correction from Reuters, which had previously said that Cheuko was a former Navy SEAL.

Saka scores in Arsenal win after 3-month layoff

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 01 April 2025 15:14

Bukayo Saka made a sensational return for Arsenal on Tuesday, scoring in a 2-1 win over Fulham after a three-month spell on the sidelines.

Saka, 23, hadn't featured for Arsenal since injuring his hamstring at Crystal Palace just before Christmas, with the England star forced into surgery and a rehabilitation program.

But he came off the bench in the 66th minute to a raucous ovation from the Emirates crowd and then netted Arsenal's second goal of the night with a cushioned header at the back post after a neat flick on from Gabriel Martinelli.

"The reception speaks for itself," Saka's teammate Declan Rice said after the game. "That's why he's one of the best wingers in the world, because he attacks the box and sniffs the goal. You take them, he's in the right position at the right time and topped off a great night for him and for us.

"He gives us an outlet. All of our front players are so different and rotate so well. With Bukayo back it's a real boost."

The second-place Gunners were all over Fulham in the opening half and finally took the lead in the 37th minute with a strike from Mikel Merino.

Fulham cut into their deficit in second-half stoppage time, but Arsenal saw out the result to provisionally cut Liverpool's lead at the top of the table to nine points.

Liverpool can restore their 12-point lead when they host Everton on Wednesday in the Merseyside derby.

Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta talked up Saka's comeback in the prematch news conference and named him on the substitutes' bench for the visit of Fulham in the teams' 30th Premier League match of the campaign.

"A beautiful moment to see how much our people love, respect and admire Bukayo," Arteta said after the win. "It's not a surprise to any of us and the best result is the reaction -- he goes and says thank you to the sports science guys.

"He lifts the stadium, the energy, and it's great to have him back."

Saka was on a bench that included Raheem Sterling and Leandro Trossard, with Ethan Nwaneri and Martinelli selected as the starting wingers.

The loss sees Fulham stay in eighth place, but they can be passed by both Aston Villa and Bournemouth if either team should win its game on Wednesday.

Elanga haunts United as Forest boost UCL dream

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 01 April 2025 15:14

Anthony Elanga's breakaway goal against his former club earned high-flying Nottingham Forest a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Premier League on Tuesday.

The Swede left Old Trafford to make way for big-money signing Antony two years ago and played like he had a point to prove at the City Ground, scoring what proved to be the winner, having run two thirds of the pitch, just five minutes in.

Diogo Dalot's first-half header came out off the crossbar, while substitute Mason Mount fizzed a late strike wide, but otherwise the below-par visitors were again lacking the cutting edge they need to rectify their miserable season.

The victory helps Forest continue their remarkable campaign, with Nuno Espirito Santo's third-placed side now eight points clear of Chelsea in fourth, while United's first league loss in five leaves them 13th in the standings.

"We controlled the game, but we already knew this team can score goals out of nothing," United boss Ruben Amorim told TNT Sports.

"When they scored we changed the game a little bit from what they want. We tried with good opportunities, but in the last third, the last pass, the last assist wasn't there. Then if we don't have that, we cannot score goals."

Following their 3-2 win at Old Trafford in December, Forest came into the contest looking to complete their first league double over United since 1991-92 under Brian Clough.

They were soon on their way as Elanga made his former club pay for some slack defending, Forest scoring the opening goal of a Premier League match for the 23rd time this term - more than any other side.

In contrast, only Leicester City have conceded the opening goal in more matches among all Premier League sides than United in all competitions.

United continued to struggle to create any real openings of note. Amorim summoned Rasmus Højlund, fresh from breaking his 22-hour goal drought against Leicester last time out, for a second-half reshuffle.

The visitors, however, remained toothless in attack. The introduction of Harry Maguire late on gave them an additional threat, with one effort in stoppage time cleared off the line by Forest defender Murillo.

Forest held on comfortably as they moved a step closer to returning to Europe's elite club competition next season for the first time in 45 years.

"Suffer, hard work, believe, helping each other, clearance on the line," Nuno said. "It was a very hard game for us.

"The records, the boys are breaking all of them and today the City Ground was part of the game."

United fell to their 13th Premier League defeat, their second-most in a single campaign in the competition, one short of their record of 14 in 2023-24.

PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Philadelphia Eagles CEO Jeffrey Lurie signaled that a contract extension for coach Nick Sirianni will be coming soon.

"Nick is going to be our coach. We don't talk publicly [about contracts], we never have, but you guys I'm sure will find out soon enough that Nick will be our coach going forward," Lurie said at his annual news conference at the league meetings. "He has done an outstanding job."

Sirianni is entering the final year of the five-year deal he signed when becoming a head coach for the first time in 2021.

He has compiled a 48-20 regular-season record during his time in Philadelphia, which is the third-highest career winning percentage (.706) in the Super Bowl era.

He has guided the team to two Super Bowl appearances, including a decisive win this past February against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Eagles suffered a 1-6 collapse down the stretch in 2023 and got off to a 2-2 start this past season, seemingly putting Sirianni on shaky ground, but the team responded by going 16-1 down the stretch, including the postseason, to deliver Philadelphia its second Lombardi Trophy.

"Everything that I had hoped for with Nick, he embodies, whether it's connection, intelligence in so many ways from football intelligence, emotional intelligence, managing of people, hiring of assistant coaches, growth mindset at all times," Lurie said.
